I used to work with a country artist named (I did have his name here but I felt bad for calling him out, he is a nice guy) in Chicago. He was the epitome of this. When he was writing songs he would listen to country radio to find subjects to write his next song about. Then he would basically take that song and change it just enough to not be sued. Very well produced, very little creativity.
This gets even better in the wake of Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town," a song he had no part in writing. There were, however, 4 songwriters who contributed to that pile of shit.
Its funny man, a lot of old dudes that listen exclusively to country in my area HATE hiphop music because "all they sing about is cars, drugs, and sex" and ive always found that hilarious. Is "Trucks, beer, and sex" not the same thing? Vehicles drugs/alcohol and sex have been at the forefront of almost every music genre ever.
the sad thing is that country and hiphop have so much in common. in an ideal world theyd be like sister genres but because one is associated with white people and the other with black people theres this mutual contempt between them even though its all supposed to be about downtrodden and struggling people who society wishes it could ignore (emphasis on supposed, since both genres now have these born-rich kids pandering off of the themes that they don't actually relate to)
@@vlad5042 This reminds me of the song "Hip Hop was to Blame After All"..."Hip-hop decided to homogenize itself And base itself in violence and wealth Hip-hop decided to become its lowest traits And sell them to the public over everything that's great"... OMG the best line "Like Mike's Evander-ing, F*&% your ears" referencing Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield ear off in a boxing match! Bo is a true word smith for sure
Love the reaction man. I grew up in backwoods Bama, raised on Willie, Waylon, Johnny, and Merle. The first time I saw this song I laughed for a good 20 minutes. Showed my dad and I swear I’ve never seen that man wheeze so hard in my life. Bo Burnham hit the nail on the head with how things have changed in country music.
Holy shit. I just got the line: "Like Mike's Evanderin', Fuck your ears I'm pandering Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear basically in half during their second fight.

"Popular" music production in general is mostly algorithm based. The algorithm can create some mildly catchy songs occasionally but they get old very quickly. Churn and burn music mentality to make a quick profit.
It’s exactly the same Tom McDonald is doing. The mad lip style use of specific words that pander to his audience is out of the same playbook. He even set it up to avoid any criticism by claiming that it all stems from his songs being controversial although the truth is that there are no depths in his lyrics, his skill set is mediocre and his hook game is down right embarrassing. It’s very impressive - and mind blowing how people are eating it up
That’s a hot take…and I’m here for it!! I keep hearing all these songs by artists like Tom about getting cancelled…you’d think he was struggling with all the cancelling that was happening to him. It’s almost like “getting cancelled” has grown into a business model that pushes the most reactive portion of the population into a positive feedback loop of promoting anyone who blows on the ol’ “Its ok to be unwilling to acknowledge or accept any worldview that replaces my specific type of masculinity with anything else because my entire sense of being is tied up in a social concept that can’t change FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I AM SO MANLY” dogwhistle

Stadium Country always makes me feel like the dudes wanna be famous like the female pop stars but can't take that route cuz they are "too manly". I've been to a few country concerts and while not liking the music 99% of the time, country artists are some of the most talented musicians out there. Went to a smaller day event with my dad. I watched on man play with every band that day on a different instrument. He was the vocalist to the 2nd to last band. Due to it being a smaller show it was much more transparent on what was happening that day. Every band had someone out for whatever reason. This guy stepped up and played ALL DAY. I really wish I could remember the band name. He deserves whatever fame comes his way.
I haven't listened to much of the newer stuff. I don't care for it. He's right about the story telling. Aside from a few here and there, almost all my favorite country songs were stories.
I forget the documentary, but Kris Kristofferson flew a helicopter over to Johnny Cash’s house to play Sunday Morning Coming Down… a damn fine story! Legends. And happy 90th birthday Willie! 🎂💕
Hahaha... such a good reaction to this and completely agree with u.... and completely agree about Luke Bryan... Zack Brown and Chris Stapleton are the only country artists in recent memory who I can stomach... it's funny that people in the 90s thought of Garth Brooks as a sellout.... country has slid a long way since then
How could you pause after talking over part of the lyrics and not rewind before you restart it because you were totally missing punchlines. After ranting about the boot thing you totally missed the line about writing about writing a tractor from the comfort of his private jet. One of the better lines in the song.
True. I love all of the old school country western music. But modern "top 40 country" is the same as any other sort of modern top 40. It's formulaic. They just look at what's selling best. And then they try to copy it. Top 40 is profits over art. Some art does of course make it on to the "top 40 list". But the formulaic bs was never worth remembering in the first place. And the true art will never be forgotten.
The only exception I make for this kind of patently-insincere artist is when they make vague songs about partying with friends (this holds for any genre of music) because you have to opt-in to that mood of music which prevents that “fake” impression
These Radio Country bros are exactly the same as Trap rappers whose lyrics consist solely of bragging about their stacks. It's all pop of the lowest order. Radio Country has been garbage since the 1990s. Even 1980s radio Country makes a lot of current Red Dirt music feel fake.
There's still a few good red dirt songs i like. a few artists have a few good songs. Even if they are kinda over done. Oklahoma Breakdown by Stoney LaRue is probably one of my favorites right now.
The only genuine country artist was chris ledoux. He wasnt real big because he refused to leave wyoming to live in nashville for a record deal. Gave up more fame and fortune to stay in the country and live the country life
Waylon predicted this and felt it and wrote it down in song. “So baby let's sell your diamond ring Buy some boots and faded jeans and go away This coat and tie is choking me In your high society you cry all day We've been so busy keepin' up with the Jones”
