    I had to clap when Bill said how he never understood how Black people could adopt the God of the slave master.
    I never understood why Native Americans & Black people could love a religion that was brought to the Americas by European Empires.
    Columbus even forcibly converted the Natives to Catholicism.

      +Ron R I think it's because the bible has a quote for both sides of everything. The slave masters and the abolitionsits not only used the same bible to support their arguments but often the exact same passages. That plus the fact that when your life is nothing but pain and heartache the thought of a "better life" after you die can be very alluring.

      Following religion is all about following *the right one*. So what if you stick to your guns and follow the faith of your ancestors, if their faith is wrong? The afterlife/eternity matters much more than the few decades you get to spend on Earth.
      I'm Lithuanian and while 80% of the country is Catholic, most of us are also somehow proud of our history of sucessfully resisting the Crusaders and remaining the last pagans in Europe. If the crusaders were right all along, though, our ancestors were stupid for resisting them all those years. You have to be an idiot to reject the right religion only because it was brought to you by force.
      Of course, there's no reason to believe that Christianity is the right religion but those brought up with it like to assume it.

    him quoting the bible doesn't make him right just like me quoting and Dr sues book does not make it real.

    • @kefkapalazzo1
      @kefkapalazzo1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not in this context he's just using the quote to justify why the oppressed gravitate to Christianity. It'd be like quoting green eggs and ham to say the story's about trying new things

    • @KingBuddha84
      @KingBuddha84 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +kefkapalazzo1 yeah but eggs are high in cholesterol and ham is salty, processed meat. So too is the bible filled with contradictions and archaic, primitive thinking which are killers just like green eggs and ham...

    • @KingBuddha84
      @KingBuddha84 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kefkapalazzo1 speaking of Ham... Slave owners used the curse of Ham that Noah imposed on his son (Ham) to justify slavery...

      +Abnormal Wrench The truth is inconvenient to their narrative. Similar to how very few Christian know how derivative Christianity is. Virgin birth etc. were all stolen from previous mythology. Not to mention all the stolen pagan rituals. When you look at those sort of facts it's hard not to conclude it was all made up by humans. Not even very original ones at that.

    • @julie-mariedemers1961
      @julie-mariedemers1961 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Matt Pratt I disagree. If the same myths keep showing up everywhere, different ages, different geographical locations, different cultures altogether, unknown to each other, does not prove they are made up. On the contrary, it would tend to prove there is a common thread, a basic truth somewhere that has been deformed by time and religions.

    • @matt4176

      listen at the end of the day each religion has its flaws...but look, christians, jews, athiests, buddhists. hindus, confusionists, etc, are not the ones threatening the world and blowing themselves up.

      +Imani Leach I think west was the civilizing force of this debate... he always is...
      Sean Hannity his literal polar opposite once said after a heated debate with him. "I dont know why I like you... I just do" Basically saying I disagree with you on *everything* but i still want to be your friend. Corny shit but if only we could all be as inspiring as West.
      West is just a like able guy. He will tell you why you are wrong, then ask if you would come over to his place for dinner afterwords.
      Agree or disagree with his politics... he strives for truth (what he has concluded to be true) and brotherhood.
      He doesnt call everyone brothers and sisters because its cool or hip or 'black'. He actually loves 'thy neighbor'.
      I am anti-religious... but West makes me think man. I once said i would never vote for a pious individual. I must caveat that. Unless its Cornel West.

    Asking "what's up with diversity" and assuming it's a "liberal thing" to bend over backwards to nominate undeserving but diverse groups is THE biggest problem that liberals face. I don't know what the problem is in understanding the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. One of those ways is CLEARLY and UNEQUIVOCALLY the wrong approach. Take the test and see if you're a reasonable person or a narrative driven and reality averse ideologue. Forced diversity is just another form of discrimination. A "tyranny of the minority".

      DarkReflections86 I agree, you see a lot of petitions that don't get attention. That is a good idea on why he hasn't been on his show but he also has spoken with(let's be honest) less important and influential people, even like Zach Galifinakis and The girl with green lips so Bill Maher is right when he says that. I think it is because Bill throws a lot of controversial curve balls when he talks to politicians and maybe that had them on edge about coming on the show, but i don't think he will turn this down..

      yeah that's everywhere. give someone power and they'll use it.. If it can keep people inline without hurting anything.. it should be fine. It's just.. religion takes it too far is all. I'm sure others do as well.. kind of like oh say.. higher ups do it as well.

    Either way Bill Maher and Dr.West are epic.

    To Bill Maher,
    I have enjoyed your show to no end and could not describe what it has meant to me to hear your views. I have disagreed with you on numerous cautions but have always felt that you are a genuine person (whether that's down to great acting or you're just being yourself I could not say). You are a great, nay the greatest advocate for drawing a line on were you view society should stand on religion, politics, drugs and matters of civil liberties. I should be, on most counts against your views due my upbringing. But have grown to understand that not all things are black and white, through you i have experienced what it would mean to a living as you see fit and wish for more than nothing else that everyone gets to see the same. I wish I could have been at your show when you came to my country but could not afford it at the time. Anyway, excuse me for rambling (it could not be helped). I just wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday and many more breath taking years. I wish I could give to you what you given me but I hope this heart felt Birthday wish will suffice. I hope this reaches you, but it doesn't I will bring it with me to the next show you do here.
    Your Sincerely,
    Marlin

    the attacks on New Years Eve in Germany were committed by recent refugees however you were mistaken of their origin. The vast majority of the offenders were from North Africa not Syria as this was stated by the Cologne police.

    My favorite line of Bill's in this episode was: "I never understood why black people wanted to adopt the 'God' of the slave master."
    I love that because, as a black person, I've wondered about that too.
    I know that during slavery and other historical times where we were discriminated against and treated horribly, we clung to religion to cope.

      The black church like the ethopia branch existed long before the colonial period that part of the reason.

      YOu painting everything with too broad a brush my friend most Africans accepted Christianity because of the missionary work in improving their lives like bringin modern Medicine.
      In Ameica the Bible was the biggest force against slavery so many master didn't let slaves read the bible

    John Krasinksi is absolutely on-point with the fact that there's not enough opportunity in Hollywood for filmmakers of color both in front of and behind the camera. Bill is also right in that the nominees may have just been better than the candidates of color. But more performances in important movies by people of color will make this less of an issue in terms of who gets nominated.
