I think the biggest change was when FedEx bought RPS. Wasn't mentioned at all in this.

Yes. I was one of the early pioneers.
We covered a ton of area to try to compete with UPS 5 to 1 ratio. To put it bluntly We worked our balls off to make FedEx Ground what it is today. We also paid for all the fuel, tires and trucks out of our own pockets.
Without us the contractors FedEx would not be where they are today

My delivery van was a 1990 International p1000. When you got up close to it you could see where it said RPS under the FedEx vinyl.
We went from RPS to FedEx literally overnight
