- Mauthausen, Austria - the Mauthausen concentration camp (Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp) in Austria. Let's go visit the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp (the Mauthausen concentration camp) which was the hub of a large group of German concentration camps that was built around the villages of Mauthausen and Sankt Georgen an der Gusen (Gusen) in Upper Austria, roughly 20 kilometres east of the city of Linz. The Mauthausen concentration camp operated from the time when Austria was annexed into the German Third Reich in 8 August 1938, to 5 May 1945, at the end of the Second World War. Starting with a single camp at Mauthausen, the complex expanded over time and by the summer of 1940 Mauthausen had become one of the largest labour camp complexes in the German-controlled part of Europe, with four main subcamps at Mauthausen and nearby Gusen, and nearly 100 other subcamps located throughout Austria and southern Germany, directed from a central office at Mauthausen.

It was 2001, when I went to the Camp to become more educated what happened here. I was born in Dublin, Ireland, where we only hear of the mass buried graves in our country as our own history is mostly buried and no one want to discuss it. Coming to here actually helped, to see and experience the reality of it, which effected my soul during the day. I hadn't prayed for many years, but my visit there made it so clear to me and this time I did, giving me a different perception of the real world we are living in, still controlled by power. Thank you so much for this video, to remind me what I learned and focus on my own kindness and gratitude how lucky I am now today.

Your dad saved my dad and he is a hero 75118. Please write a book. Speer never should’ve been allowed to live for what he did. Roll call Appel was the hardest part of the day. It was freezing cold and prisoners couldn’t move. If they did they were beaten. Notice Germans or Austrians laughing. Tell me what has really changed.
My grandfather has survived hell of this concentration camp . He arrived there 10.01.1942 , day of his 32 nd birthday.

I could be wrong here but I think the machine you were puzzled about could be for treating clothing with Zyklon-B. I thought that because the doors look like they would seal tight when closed.

Thank you for posting this. My parents, Lajos & Iren Pusztay, were prisoners at Mauthausen from probably late October/early November 1944 until the camp was liberated by U.S. Forces in 1945. My parents along with all their co-workers at a factory in Budapest were sent to Mauthausen after the Nazis discovered the factory in Budapest was purposely making inferior products in protest of being under the thumbs of the Germans. My parents very rarely talked about Mauthausen because it was so horrific. The one comment that I remember both of them saying is that the Nazis routinely would take prisoners out to the Danube and execute them via firing squad and the bodies would then fall into the river. My father's section was informed that they were to be executed "in 2 weeks" but luckily the liberation happened just before their execution was to take place.

Thank you for showing this. My father was in the 11th Armored division, 41st Cav Mechanized and one of the first to enter the camp. He spoke very little of that experience other than it was absolute horror. I was hoping to visit this some day but not sure that will ever happen. Thanks again for the tour.

May history never forget the poor people who suffered in these concentration camps, nor ever forgive those who operated them.My Serbian great-grandfather was a survivor of Mathausen, Dachau, and a Croatian and Nazi -operated concentration camp in the Balkans known as Sajmiste. He often spoke of the absolutely horrendous conditions in which the prisoners were kept in Mathausen and in the other camps.

Thank you for the tour and your kind and thoughtful words. My brother found and sent your video to me. I recently started researching our ancestry. Our 85 year old father was a young child in Crete, Greece, during WWII and recalls the occupation. He lost two relatives, the first, a paternal uncle, who he knew was taken to a camp, and the second, a relative who was killed in am explosion at his home. This weekend, i discovered our great uncle is listed in the 'death book' for the Mauthausen camp and in US Holocaust Museum records.. he died a few months after he was taken there as a political prisoner, supposedly of sepsis.. it must have been horrible.. thank you sir for your efforts to share this part of history with everyone...

I am extremely proud to know that my father was a platoon leader from The 30th Infantry, 3rd division who liberated this god awful concentration camp. He never talked to his family about it. We understand why now. But we are honored to know he helped liberate this camp.

Vic. The device that you are showing at 11:20 into the video is most likely an Autoclave. If so, this device would have been used to sterilize clothes of prisoners by subjecting the items to high temperatures and pressure, as well as steam. These devices are used in hospitals and industrial laundries. Thank you for your attention to detail and excellent photography.

My late Mother survived this camp after being in Auschwitz for 6 months. She had already lost her parents, grandparents, sister and her 3 year old nephew and all but one of her Mothers 9 siblings. My Mother was traumatized for life.

This is the best feature I’ve ever seen on Mauthausen. You give such respect to the victims and the the atrocities they bore. This truly is an amazing documentary about ombré of the worst concentration camps in human history.

Thank you Vic for this tour, very respectfully done. I noticed those very large wash basins were the same as the Nazi’s used in Sachsenhausen. Apparently, even in there the guards or kapo’s would do harm to the inmates even to the point of death. These are truly evil places, but it’s important for everyone to see documentaries like this. ....not everyone has the means to get out there and visit these cess pits. God bless ya Vic!

A Good and very comprehensive tour. You did a great job explaining the details It was very sad, but we need to understand the evils that can lurk in man. I always appreciate your attention to details in giving context to history. It was sad to see what man is capable of doing to his fellow man through prejudice and willful brutality. Thank you for sharing your videos with the world of these awful places so we dont forget and thank you for the respect and dignity you filmed them with also remembering these people actually existed that they were human and bless them they suffered terribly .The information you shared with such dignity and respect was incredible .Munchausen brought tears to my eyes its not only keeping the stories alive but by sharing information people like me have never heard before it give people a real insight .I had heard of the slave labour but not in such detail or about the profit its horrific to think of it. Never heard anything about this one. I knew there was thousands of camps around at the time but wow this is absolutely unreal to see this. Thanks for sharing. A very informative video of Mauthausen. You omitted the 76 steps down to the quarry which was why the camp was located there.
The steps (unfortunately) were closed on the day I visited, I was told that a tourist had fallen the day before..

As my father was in the Dutch resistance and taken captive by the Germans, he wanted me to understand so he mademe read everything about the Dutch Underground, the camps, the prisons and everything, I could barely read and I was only six years old. My father got tortured and went crazy in prison, our whole family suffered because of that. As so many millions did suffer.

Seeing the places in modern day times gives us a depth of the reality of it all instead of from an old black and white photo only. Evil must be stopped at all costs. Never allow it to take root.

I visited this camp in 1992 and it was chilling to walk through it. The group of young people (late teens, early 20s) I was with were crying or dumbstruck and as we left we all sat silently for about half an hour after trying to take it all in as we rode away. No one could speak. No words

I found it interesting & heartbreaking. I did not know the stairs of death and quarry were temporarily closed. However, I think you should have mentioned them in your video and perhaps shown pictures of them so viewers not familiar with Mauthausen's history could get the full picture of what these poor people actually went through. I still enjoyed your video and hope you do more.

My grandfather, Clyde Hoffer, shot the locks off at that camp back in 1945. He said the prisoners would walk past him, skin and bones, barely alive with a blank stare not saying a word.

The way you present your video is very personal and informative, you tell the truth. I can hear it in your voice how it's affecting you to walk through that hell hole of a place just to keep it alive in the memory of all!! Our only consultation is like my Gran who lived through the war always said, there's a special place in hell for Hitler and his Nazi thugs and they will find out just exactly how it feels to do what they did and more!!

Dear Mr Stefanu. I visited Mauthausen 35 years ago those 2 crematory ovens are SYMBOLIC. No one was cremated at MAUTHAUSEN in them. Just like the AUSCHWITZ ones, they were brought and constructed post-war. The single oven was there and 4 feet away another oven called the small cremato. It had all the appearance of a solid fuel central heating oven. Not seen on your video.

I visited Mauthausen in December 2019. It was easily the most distressing place I’ve ever seen. In the backdrop of breathtakingly beautiful rural Austria, perched on a scenic hilltop lies this notorious concentration camp. Vic did a great job, but didn’t show the haunting “steps of death”. At the foot of the hill was a granite quarry where inmates spent 12 hours each day mining stone and carrying it up the notorious steps to the camp. Thousands of emaciated prisoners died in the climb carrying 50+ kgs of granite at a time up the notorious steps. Also, Vic did show the toilets of the prisoner barracks - eerily, they still have a lingering foul smell of stale human waste, even after all these decades…

I lived in Klagenfurt in 1979-1980. I'm not aware of this camp, and did not speak to any of my Austrian colleagues about it. My father flew B-17 during WWII, but he rarely spoke of his time overseas....a sad testimony to this time of history.

Hello everyone. I'd like to say that in this camp thousands of Spanish people were locked in and murdered. People always talk about polish, jewes, French, etc, and not many words for the Spaniards. I want to send respect to those Spanish prisoners, along with polish, jewes, etc, for all they suffered because of fascism.
You are absolutely right!! Not too many people know that out of the 7,000 Spanish republicans in Mauthausen, at least half of them died there.. Thank you!

Very informative and professionally documented video! Top notch. So, so sad all of these prisoners were killed in this evil place. This is the work of evil governments. I have met and lived with both German and Japanese peoples, and all were very kind understanding people. Most are very ashamed of this history. I feel so many people were mislead and lied to during this time period. The murder of innocent people will never be forgiven. I pray these souls found peace in the after life. Very good job of presenting history!
