I love how mellow this interview is and the respect they have for eachother the enables the conversations they can possibly have by not being afraid or backlash
Cavett seems really strange here. "Let me change the subject to tell you a guy called me Whitey", "I'm sure O.J. is guilty", "Let me quote some Shakespeare", " I know Ingmar Bergman", etc. All of it conversation-stopping, but Jones managed it all pretty affably. But Cavett was putting more focus on himself than on his guest, and in very awkward ways.
I've been watching a lot of old DC interviews and I would say that his style has changed. I'm in no way sensitive to uncomfortable conversations but unless this has been edited or I'm missing some context, DC does seem to be focusing on race a great deal. JEJ has had an extensive career and although his racial experience does define him, I think it's only a part of the story but from this clip, this aspect seems to be on DC's mind. Coming from a man who held a great deal of interviews during a time when racial strife was in full swing, this seems like DC is reaching out to JEJ and asking him, inadvertently, why society thinks it's back in the 60's again. He did bring up several times this generation's view on the PC culture. Coming from a generation when differences were openly discussed, this restriction can be quite confusing.
I was a kid during the time of JEJ being an older grandfatherly type. Looking back on his early movies he was so strong, thin and muscular. A very impressive figure indeed.
I saw "Dr. Strangelove" for the first time around the time "Return of the Jedi" was released. I recognized his voice. He played the man who discovers that the release mechanism for the Bomb is stuck.
@@UnlicensedOkie Not quite. He attempted t release bomb, but discovered that it was stuck. The captain had to come down and manually release the bomb. (What happened next was history.)
I worked with James Earl Jones like 4 years before this interview, on the television series, Pros and Cons. I had an interesting encounter with him. I had lost my condo in Simi Valley after the 1987 Directors Guild strike. My response was to buy a school bus and spend 6 months making it into my home. My family and I lived in the Artist Loft District of Downtown LA for 4.5 years, in the bus. I met a black street guy named Frank. Frank had lost his job at an Afro-American Museum when the Reagan Administration had stopped funding it. So this made him homeless, but what was so impressive about Frank was that he didn't just roam the streets asking for money. He made these awesome bracelets out of solid copper conductor and color coded phone wire that I guess he knew where to dumpster dive. James Earl Jones saw the bracelets I was wearing, maybe because they had a very African vibe to them, and asked me about them. I told him Frank's story. He asked if I could get him some of these "Franks" - which is what they were called. So I told Frank that James Earl Jones had requested some Franks. Frank told me that he didn't want any money for the Franks, he just wanted an autographed photo of the actor. So both guys ended up the happy owners of their requested objects...
That is such a sweet and yet heartbreaking story. I bet it made Franks days worthwhile knowing hus hero was wearing "The Franks". Sometimes it's the little things in life that are truly the big things carrying us forwards....
@ acchaladka @Joshua Gill Yeah, it's very strange to see Dick "out of his own era" and having little rants about political correctness and so on. I'm used to seeing Dick Cavett when he's got his finger on the pulse of society, not looking back on it. What's really curious is that his questions don't even really match anything that James is saying. "So Stanley cast me..." "Friends, Romans, countrymen..... that was Shakespeare, wasn't it? Any idea which one?" "Uhhh.... yes. Anyway, so I was in a Kubrick movie..." "Can I say 'blackie'? Is that racist?" "Ummm... heh. Right. Anyway, so this Kubrick film..."
Let us hope he was being ironic. But no, I don't think so. Oh God, going to Yale was torture. And I did go to Yale, folks! I did. th-cam.com/video/344hWExv5DI/w-d-xo.html
If you tried to do that today, you'd have to say, "OK folks! Here comes an ironic statement," then wink five times while saying it. Then hope no one takes it literally.
I enjoyed this discussion (apart from the awkward moments) and have always admired Mr. Jones' impressive voice. The conversation regarding being called whitey vs. blackie reminds me of the various times I've been called ¨guero¨ here in Mexico, which basically means blue-eyed or blond. Even though it's usually not meant to be offensive, for some reason I'm uncomfortable with the term.
The problem with JEJ is he only can play the president, the chief, the boss, the royal, and that limits his potential roles. He has such majesty and presence, you cannot give him a common type. Poitier while could be majestic, had a much more common type that directors could cast at almost any role. Frankly, and this is going to sound childish, my favorite role of JEJ has to be in Conan, he was great and memorable there
I’m not sure where you came up with the idea that he can only play those limited types of roles. Maybe it’s only the films that you’re watching. He’s played a variety including that of a preacher/civil rights activist in ‘Road To Freedom: The Vernon Johns Story’.
He has told the story of learning to speak in that magnificent voice rather than in his native Mississippi accent. Kind of like how Johnathon Smith(Dr Smith in Lost in Space) took up the English accent rather than his native New Yorker accent.
They wouldn't be having this cringeworthy conversation today. "Whitey" and the n-word are UNIVERSES apart. "Whities" never got dragged away from their homeland to be auctioned off as slave labour, for one thing. Cavett could be most irritating and he certainly displays "whitey-style" entitlement. Even calling someone "blackie" is cringe-inducing.
Is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were a part of the main cast?
I've suspected Kubrick never liked black actors. The only others I can think of in his films is Scatman Crothers and Tony Burton in The Shining. Burton hardly had a role but Crothers got to a point where he broke down and cried. Then again, Kubrick fucked with everybody however there is an extreme lack of black people in his films.
Guys I wanted to let you guys know that it is the last days. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 states "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" If you're not in the word, you need to get into it. If you are, read more. The enemy is getting trickier and we need to strengthen our armor. God bless you all.
Had no idea Dick was against the super political correctness from the '90s, who knows how he would react to today's political correctness. Why isn't there another Dick Cavett?
The age of the MA, the MA TRI X, the age of ORDO AB CHAO=a female or MA means of control which knows to pose as a PA-tri archy which pits father against son, son against father through manipulation-framing-setting up-cursing.
