Marshall Lead 12 5005 mk1 vs mk2 circuit differences and comparison

  • Here's a quick shootout between two versions of the Marshall Lead 12 5005.
    My guitar is going in the two amps at the same volume (thanks to the Boss LS-2), and I'm switching the outputs of the amps to the same speaker with the little red and blue "sexy switch".
    Light on on the switcher = mark 1 (on the left)
    Light off on the switcher = mark 2 (on the right)
    I'll post a more detailed description later on, in the meantime sorry about my english and my playing and don't hesitate to ask your questions in the comments.

    Thank you so much! This is REALLY important lesson for any of us buying a 5005 lead 12, or just a vintage amp in general. I got nervous when I saw this comparison, because I bought an ‘86 mkII a few months ago. I was not aware there was as difference between the two. Wow! Huge difference! Also, I can attest, my mkII sounds just like yours. Crazy how loud it is on 2! 😂

    I just wasted 6:00 of my life to find out the Mk 1 is either not turned up as loud, or broken. Your ‘test’ is the only one I’ve seen so drastic.

    The slight difference is also because of the camera angle. But there is a slight shift in midrange frequency there between both.

    I bought one of these, turned out to be a MK2, years ago based on great reviews for the 5005 in general. Mostly glad I got what I got, though replacing the speaker is a popular mod and I'm looking into it.

    Great comparison, got the MK1 built Dec 1982. Great amp, not very loud (I didnt know the MK2 was so different). I got my MK1 as a practice amp, so quiet is good. :)

      Put an eminence in it and you ll get double up in volume with A Huge general sound -upgrade. It will allow you to use the clean of the amp with low gain and the amp will get fatter when used with high gain. I don’t understand why people are praising the original celestion in it as it s the crappiest speaker I ve ever played on, it just kill the sound and make the sound small, nasal and crappy. Put a good speaker in it and you won t believe your ears. I own 3 stacks och 2 lead 12 and 4 combos. The only one that sounds like crap is one of the combos that still has the original speaker. First combo I bought of those I wanted to put in the trash. But then I did get the head of the stack that I plugged in cabinet and I understood at once that the original speaker only positive thing is that it is original, nothing else, believe me try another speaker in it…

    I have a Vintage MK 2 sitting here. Works fine just needs 2 new Pots. Yes it is loud AF, and gets decent enough natural gain in a pinch (enough for some Maiden or Priest 😉)...I think I'll get the Pots replace and put it on Reverb or Craig's List. My arthritis doesn't allow me to play anymore. 😔

      Hi. Thanks for your input.
      My guess it that they might have changed the circuit while the unit still looked like a mk1.
      That would explain how some people find their mk1 to sound like mine, and some don't.
      Do you own a mk1 yourself?

    Your Mk 1 with the gain maxed on the high input sounds very strange. There is nowhere near the amount of distortion there should be. It should start getting saturated at just over 8 on the dial.

      @@Grim177 Hi. Sorry typed my last message too fast, and on my phone (and used the wrong account...) . I erased it. Maybe the lack of volume is misleading, but there is distortion with gain at 8, you can hear it around 4:10.

    What is the difference between the high and low inputs?

    • @cellardoorpns
      @cellardoorpns  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On both models there's a bigger resistor in series on the low input : hence your volume will be lower.
      But on the mk1 the big difference is that the high input has hard clipping to ground (à la dod250\dist+ let's say), and the low input doesn't.
      You can even use the high input and just plug any jack socket in the low input and you'll get higher volume without the clipping.
      Sorry if that wasn't clear in the video.

    • @jacobsamano9761
      @jacobsamano9761 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Old amps used to be made with 2 inputs so that a vocalist could share the amp with the guitar player and thus the low input was meant for plugging in a microphone which used to have lower impedance values. Then guitar players started noticing that by using the low input with their guitars as well they could get a much cleaner sound with more headroom as the amp would not start to break up as early as on the high input channel, this allowed the guitar player to get different tones and even better sounds from their pedals in conjunction with the low input channel or use the high input for dirtier sounds and lower volumes. Hope that helps.

    I see only one schematic on the web, where is the circuit difference?

    • @cellardoorpns
      @cellardoorpns  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. As I said, the mk1 has diode hard clipping (to ground), and the preamp's different, too. If you look up "Marshall lead 12 mk1 schematic" you'll find it first in google images (I'm on my phone rn, I'll send it later if you can't find it). The only official schem i could find online was for a mk2/3. Someone draw the mk1 schem by hand with a few minor mistakes, you can find that one too, it's in 2 parts : preamp and power amp, if I remember well.

    • @marcomarchi2745
      @marcomarchi2745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Found it! There are many differences! Basically it seems the mk1 is designed to have more gain. Also in your video it seems it affect only the gain and volume. As the audio is not recorded well and TH-cam compress also, can you tell me if you can hear more top end in one version? Other frequencies differences?

    • @cellardoorpns
      @cellardoorpns  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcomarchi2745 Yep, it sure appear this way (the schem was traced by me on exactly the amp you're listening to in the video). Sorry about the sound quality but if anything, youtube compression just minimizes the differences in this case.
      The mk1 sure had more highs.
      Even with the diodes out disconnected it has less gain than my mk2. Compared to my mk2 it lacked body and bass, and the highs were quite spiky, for a lack of a better term.
      The main thing is that is was way less loud than the mk2, even with the diodes out of the way.
      The interesting feature to me was this kind of fuzz-oriented characted that the mk2 doen't have.
      Hope that helps, but remember it's all very subjective :)
