- Violet lever has 3 positions: forward, neutral and backward.
Ball spring device for the lever positioning is not shown.
Green and blue gears are in permanent mesh. When left pink gear is in mesh with the blue gear, grey slider goes forward. When right pink gear is in mesh with the green gear, grey slider goes backward.
The lever neutral position is for stopping the grey slider or setting its position (by hand turning orange screw).
The mechanism is suitable for low speed.
In case of high speed stop the input before reversing.

The green gear is driving one.
Why its gets shorter when its on the green gear
The lengths of the pink gears ensure that when the left pink gear meshes with the blue gear, the right pink gear does not mesh with the green gear and vice versa.

I meant how the yellow bar (that pulls the object) gets shorter when the pink gear meshes the green gear

This should be less complicated - similar mechanism is located in fishing rod not sure about reversing part but the up and down mechanism is similar to that application here.
