I'm of the mindset of he who doesn't work doesn't eat, because in order to be sustainable one must work for their food. I think the reason for your children's willingness to help with the gardening is a testament to your parenting. Because for many children today the thought wouldn't even occur to them and what's worse they'd be absolutely abhorent to it. However it's good to not force them to do the work, but to teach them the importance of literally living by the sweat of their brow. That's the only way for one to ensure their quality of life, as well as the lives of those around them.
