My great uncle invented discwasher. He died a year ago. I just got his record player set up and working at home. I'm really glad you guys like his products. Hopefully he'll be remembered through them for many years to come.

I just realized they went around anymore while looking for a stylus brush for my daughter. The brushes made these days are crap. At least I still have mine.
I used to work there in the mid to late 70’s at the original woodworking factory making the discwashers. They were made of walnut back then and we would get some really beautiful wood coming through there. First stop the ripsaw, then the molder, the router and sander. Then off to the lacquer room where the color of the wood really came out, some of the patterns and colors were gorgeous! Then they were sent about 15 to 20 miles away to have the pads put on and packaged and shipped. Really great work experience. Great job.

Had one in the 70's along with the wooden handle folding stylus brush that also had a magnifying mirror opposite the brush. Now, 50 years later that I'm getting back into vinyl I wish I had kept the whole kit. Thanks for the trip back into time. :)
I have used the Discwasher system since 1969. It is (was) a great product. When you use it, first apply the front or leading edge to the record as you demonstrated. After about three revolutions or approximately 10 seconds rotate the pad to its' center position and complete three more revolutions on the record. Then rotate the pad to the trailing edge of the pad for another three revolutions. You should not rotate it from the from to back over and over. And remember, clean the brush on a lint free pad or use the small brush stroking backwards trailing edge to leading edge. Let the Discwasher dry before returning to the box.
As I said, I have used mine for over 55 years without any problem. My old solution which is now almost gone (I bought several large bottles) still works great. A new solution you want to look for is one that is at least 2 minimum and 4 times distilled water with a surfactant that will not hurt vinyl and help remove debris. I would recommend Mobile Fidelity Super Record Wash.
Hey Frank; I have had a Discwasher D4 since the early 80s that I inherited from my Uncle. Interesting story... my boss sent me a picture of his record player that he was looking to get rid of. As I already own a few players already, I was not interested. Yet, when looking at the picture I noticed a Discwasher with the stand and matching stylus cleaner. This I was interested in. I asked him what he was doing with that and he was going to just toss it in the Valu-Village pile he had going. Needless to say, I rescued it from certain doom and now it sits proudly with my record equipment. I had never been able to find such a complete kit ever... fate shined on me that day. Discwasher... greatest record cleaning brush ever.

I have my father's Discwasher brush, the stylus brush, and empty D4 and SC2 bottles from 1981. I just bought a second Discwahser set that includes the Zerostat gun. You're absolutely correct, these brushes are the best!
I used to have a zero stat. Loved the ozone smell. Then one day the trigger handle broke at the pivot and not repairable.
I still have, and use my original Discwasher that I bought back in 1975.... I'll never get rid of it..
I was a teen in the 80s and my dad allowed me to play his prized record collection, which was substantially large, and which included many awesome classics from the previous several decades. And he taught me how to use the Discwasher system, and he ensured that I was doing it exactly right...otherwise, no records for me!
1) When you demonstrated the record cleaning, you rocked the brush both directions...I was taught to just rock it slowly one time from the leading edge to the trailing edge over the course of 5-10 revolutions, but to never rock it back towards the leading edge again to help ensure that captured debris doesn't get back onto the cleaned record surface.
2) Why do you think the GrooveWasher brush with "just" microfiber cloth and no oriented fibers cleans better than the RCA Discwasher which does have oriented fibers (albeit not the same as the original, but still oriented nonetheless)? I have no experience with either, but I'm just wondering because it seems to me that oriented fibers would be more effective at getting down into the grooves and lifting out debris, and keeping hold of that debris, than an omni-directional microfiber cloth like on the GooveWasher brush. Thoughts? Experiences?

I have a discwasher I bought in the 80’s in the original box with the original “Licorice Pizza” record store logo-ed price tag $16.50 US (which was like $1million to me back then). For fluid I fill the original D4 bottle with AT634Record Care Solution. Love it.

I sold audio in the late 70's and early 80's I own the deluxe kit with stylus brush and zerostat gun in a clear covered wooden base. still works still use it to this day.
Even I have this Zerostat anti-static gun which gives really good sound quality.

Yes. Still use mine I got in the 70s. They also made a stylus cleaning tool and solution. Both work great.
I sold 100's of these at businesses I worked at in the 1980's out in SoCal. I also owned the kit since the 1970's. The DiscWasher was truly the standard in our industry. It's unbelievable today how many knockoffs are being sold at such an incredibly inflated price.

I live in Columbia, Missouri home of the original Discwasher factory. I use a carbon fiber brush for everyday dusting. If I come across a record with a lot of static I use my trusty Discwasher dampened with a little distilled water.
What brand brush? Also does it damage your records?
I still have the same discwasher I bought in 1981 or so, and I also have a second that I bought 5 years later when I thought my first one was lost. I still use the original. I'm saving the second for the day the first one gets worn. So far the first one is still in really great shape at almost 40 years old!

Hi Frank, you are absolutely correct, the original D4 was the very best record cleaning brush ever, still have mine that was bought in 1980. Still use it even though all of my records get the ultrasonic treatment before they hit the turntable. Regards from Australia to you and all C33 devotees.
Wow! I have a couple that are at least 15 to 20 years old. Not sure why stopped using them. I should try them again.
@@danielsteward9703 I do think you should consider trying them again. I will only stop using mine when it falls apart, which does not look like happening any time soon. When DW finally goes to brush heaven I will give it a permanent place on my cleaning shelf in a clear display case.
I too have the set with the zero stat mirror for stylus inspection and cool wooden block and covered plastic case I always envied my uncle's as a kid since I only had the brush simple box set then. About a year ago was having my car fixed at an individual's house and spotted the set sitting on a shelf alone. Bought it for 25 and then in weeks to come he had a yard sale and called me to have 1st shot at his albums super score picked up some jems and amazingly clean. I also remember having d2 d3 and d4 solutions and still have a d3 bottle although its empty. Love your vids frank welcome back and thanks for helping to keep us informed and of course spinning.

I had a housemate in school who claimed that the D4 solution was water distilled 4 times.
Tell him he's wrong; it's CLEARLY quadruple distilled!

I use it for pre-play with a light mist of regeant grade water. I brush it clean with a nail cleaning brush before use. The slight dampness helps to remove static and helps pick up more dust. The directional pad makes the original Disc Washer the best brush for this purpose. I have proven this by inspection under intense right angle LED light. I still like and use Carbon Fiber brushes, sometimes in combination but I can still see tiny bits of dust on the record using a carbon fiber brush alone. For complete record cleaning I use a multi step process with multiple fluids useing both vacum and ultrasonic methods.
I have 1 of those brushes it was handed down to me from my wifes Grandma when she passed away. Does an amazing job and love the box it comes in.😀
I still have mine in like new condition. Bought in 1978 when I purchased my Dual TT, and stereo set up.
And still use it every time I pull out an old LP to play! I don't use the old D4 liquid cleaner, distilled water works without any residue.

I've been a lifelong Discwasher user, think I have about half-dozen of 'em, like you I have stopped using the D4 fluid and have been using the Groovewasher fluid. I like the Groovewasher fluid a lot!
Groovewasher is amazing and apparently is formulated by the same guy who did the D4.
Is it true that the liquid leaves behind residue?
@@nirvanarocks83 I suppose anytime you are wiping/brushing a fluid into grooves and not physically removing the liquid via vacuum or air... then yes it is possible for residue to be left behind.
I find it best to use as little fluid as possible and needed, and again this is for "dusting and/or surface cleaning." You probably wouldn't want to use Discwashers and D4/Groovewasher as a "deep clean method."
But, all in all, I have never felt like D4 or Groovewasher left behind anything detrimental, most all records are better after use of these fluids and brushes. My opinion here, your results may vary.
I even have discwasher anti-static gun to remove static particles away from the LP.
Got my first Discwasher, Zerostat and Stylus Cleaner back in '74 or '75 and still use it today constantly. I have 6 turntables I keep in rotation, so it gets a lot of use. The original brush is a bit worn and I bought another one in the 80's which is still in good shape. I wouldn't use anything other the Discwasher stylus cleaner either, it's excellent. I have been buying records since the 60's and all the records that I bought new are in great shape, so Discwasher system must be doing something right. Great channel, except for using 'Vinyl' all the time, makes me want to yaak. They have always been records or LP's to me.
I always used to call them records as well. I figured vinyl was a newer term until I recently re-read one of my old Hit Parader magazines from 1986, and they repeatedly refered to "vinyl." I thought that was interesting. Very cool that you hung on to your Discwasher!

Hey Frank, you make a great point about using the Discwasher primarily for light cleaning. I was lucky enough to get one back in 1981 when I bought my first multiple component stereo. Still have it today completely intact with the mini-brush and the fluid storage container.It cost 20 bucks at the time. I guess I always had some nostalgia about it, ha, ha. Great to see you do a feature on. The box I have is unilingual but I really dig the bilingual version box.

I inherited a D2 Discwasher from my wife’s uncle who was an engineer at Columbia Records. Right now, I have 1 RCA (worthless), 1 D4 that i got for free which is more like the RCA brush than the previous generations. I use 1 D3 in the basement. I have 2 D2’s which I take to work and to record stores for cleaning records before I buy. I also have two of the Holy Grail Original Discwasher brushes on my SL1200. I use the GrooveWasher solution which is pretty much the best cleaning solution I’ve used. I regularly source these brushes off eBay and Facebook Marketplace, for under 15 dollars. You can find them; just be patient.
I recently used a spin clean to wash all my LPs. Treated them all with “Last” record preservative. Now I only use a carbon fiber brush to remove any dust, etc before each play. Even 50 year old albums sound terrific.

I used one of these long ago when I was playing and collecting records in my youth.
Needless to say that when I got a chance to make a music room (in progress) I bought a few versions of the Discwasher cleaning system on Ebay. I have 2 of them now. The brush and then one of the deluxe set that came with the zerostat gun and covered stand to keep everything in. I bought a spinclean as well but haven't used it yet. But I plan on cleaning up my dirtier records one day.

Several years ago, I bought a number of vintage Discwasher D4 record cleaners with the D4 solution and original box and they are easily the best record cleaners out there and as Frank mentioned, the RCA Discwasher kits made in the 1990's/early 2000's were junk made in China that did a really poor job of cleaning records, so use the vintage kits with directional fabric that makes a huge difference.

I’ve been using the Mofi brush with the replaceable micro fiber pads. I use it in conjunction with the Phoenix with enzymes, liquid cleaner. I keep a spray bottle with distilled water to thoroughly rinse the record. It works great for me! I also keep a “Swiffer” handheld duster to to use before each play. Thanks for the great videos!😀
Still have mine from 1976. I use distilled water now but it still cleans the grimiest disks. I follow up with a carbon brush and filtered air.
I don't rock mine back and forth. I put the fluid on the leading hump, start with the dry part before it, transition to the wet part and continue a single, steady rotation back to the ending dry edge. Rocking back and forth puts any dust you may have captured back onto the surface.
I still have and use my D4 brush that I purchased in the early 80's. Only use it for records that I know are only lightly dusty or dirty. I never had luck with the D4 fluid as it seemed to make my records sound noisier. I always use the brush dry, but that does sometimes cause the static to build up!
Yes Dishwasher Brush ,I had 2 bought my first in the 70s ,then I had another one which i still used.Nothing beats it ,hands down.Im 68 been into stereo albums and equipment since my High School days.Great video my man.

I do love my Spin Clean for deep cleaning. Especially useful for yard sale finds.
Also finally looking at upgrading my cartridge. I bought a really nice Technics SL-3300 direct drive table that has more bells and whistles on it that literally any modern table for a VERY reasonable price. It originally sold for $250 US in 1977. Keep in mind minimum wage in the US at the time was $2.30/hr. So this thing wasn't entry level by any means. It would sell for around $700 US today. I may end up posting a photo of the control panel for this thing. It's nuts but I use lierally every feature. Anyway, when this thing was refurbished they used a cheap stock $20 cartridge. Like the one on the Victrola you got. I finally got to the point where I justified spending double what I paid for the table for a new cartridge. Here's my logic a replacement stylus for my setup costs ~$10. They really need changed every 6 months or sooner. Most $200 carts come with a stylus rated for 5000-8000 hours play time. This is upwards of 5 years normal use. Therefore the cost ratio balances out and I'll get better quality to boot.

I purchased it at one of my local record stores (The Record Lounge in Reno Town, near Lansing, here in Michigan). It was $13 for the kit and $5 for the record-size cloth to lay the record on while you clean it. Great product!
I live in Waterford, MI. It's near Pontiac. A few minutes from my house was A harmony House, where I bought all my albums. But now, I know of no record stores near me.
@@marty3888 - I’m not sure of Waterford record stores, but we have a few in Flint, 1 in Clio, 1 in Lapeer, 2 in Owosso, 1 in Bay City and a few in Saginaw.
Hey Frank...noticed at the end your TT was a Hitachi PS-48. I just picked up one of these about 5 months and it is an ABSOLUTE BEAST!!! Traded in my Rega Planar 2 and got my Hitachi and a Nagaoka MP-110 and could not be happier...vintage is the way to go for sound and looks!

I use the discwasher. Before the discwasher there was a Watts Parostatik Disc Preener. It was round tub about the size of the record. It had a fabric like felt.with soft foam under it it also had a wic in the center that you added a small amount of water to. It cleaned the dust and removed some of the static.
Make sure you tune into my video in two weeks as I will be also discussing the Discwasher in greater detail and a better way to utilize it as I’ve had one for almost 40 years. There will also be more Classic record accessories and Classic cassette tape accessories. You will be seeing some things no one has ever shown!
About 98 percent of my record collection just has minor surface dust that i remove with a dry record cleaning brush. I might pick up an original disc washer brush to use for the ones that are a little dirtier. Thank you for sharing this great record cleaning tool with us.
The D4 was THE record cleaner for every DJ - be it in a club or home set up.
My procedure is to use the D4, the a carbon anti-static brush and then clean the needle. Clean and silent. The new D4 brush is as good as they come. Love the written instruction. Bill
I used to have a Dishwasher, but now I use a Spin Clean and static brush. Great results for me.

I love these. I was looking for one and almost paid good money on eBay...but literally the same day I found a 1983 one in perfect, unused condition...with the brush, instructions and a full bottle of fluid still in the box for $1 at a tiny thrift shop here in my town. I couldn’t believe my luck!
If the Groovewasher doesn't have the directional fabric, It's just another brush. The directional fabric is the whole point. I was a hi-fi salesman when I bought mine. Us salespeople experimented with everything we sold during slow times. That includes the "carbon fiber" brushes that came out later. I have one, but only because it came with a turntable I bought used. Even in our experiments back in the 70's, the discwasher was obviously superior.
And now I just use one of those electronic lighters for lighting candles as a cheap "zero stat". Between that and the old Discwasher, I have everything I need - other than deep cleaning at the kitchen sink.
I've had these D4 discwasher pads since the '80's (have 3 of them). Still what I use to clean records to this day, although I've been using the newer D4 fluid that RCA sells now, it seems to work just fine.....
Great job Frank in the late 80's I worked for Recoton shortly in the early 90's we purchased Dishwasher among some other companies like Jensen , Acoustic Research. When In 2002 Recoton filed and RCA took over the Dischwasher brand and cheapened the product and changed the formula.Still use it today along with the MoFi brush.

Funny thing, I have a RCA one I picked up brand-new but I think it was made wrong. 🤔 Yes I think it was. The concept is simple. Fibers go one way but mine do in the wrong direction. I think. When I rub my fingers on it I should feel it grab in a direction. It does but only along the long part. That doesn't make since to me. It should be going against the record in the opposite direction of the arrow.

I started with the RCA brush. I feel it does pretty good but also have a Spin Clean that I use when I get a new album. I use the brush for lighter cleanings.
I use the Groovewasher first then follow it up with my Discwasher. I still have half of a large bottle of the D-4 but I use my Groovewasher solution. I kept the D-4 bottle as a keepsake.

Discwasher brush is great. I use it with distilled water alcohol mix manually on clean microfiber towel. Clean both sides. The spin clean with distilled water and a bit of alcohol . Then vacuum clean both sides at once!

The original Discwasher is excellent & still have a couple that I use. But I find the black brushes & one-step solution from Mofi a little better. I don't use the pricey, noisy machines.
I use the Groovewasher exactly the same way I used the Dishwasher. I use the Nitty Gritty cleaning fluid since it is readily available in store in my area
I use a carbon/velours como brush for cleaning dust and for heavy cleaning a solution and a very good (and cheap) microfiber cloth. Except the cloth bought both products from the same guy on a vinyl record fair here in Belgium. Very satisfied with them.
My Dad has that kit downstairs in the basement next to his Dual turntable.
Dual doesn't get enough love. They made great turntables in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Just got back into DJing and started to dig out my old vinyl collection and came across my discwasher with D4+ solution purchased back in the mid-80s. Surprised I still had solution in the bottle. . . lol. I'll probably retire the D4+ solution and go with the Groovewasher solution you recommended. Thanks!
I have two like the ones that were sent to you. One I've had since the early eighties, the other I found at a charity shop recently for just $2. Both are in excellent condition and work great. They really are better than any other brush I've used.

Back in the 70’s I used the same solution, but a brush, pad attached to the turntable and cleaned the record as it played worked great, but wore out.

Luckily I found an original new/old stock Discwasher brush some years ago, even in the old box, which is fabulous, still looks as new.
I have the dishwasher cleaning kit which comes with zero stat gun and stylus cleaner. It’s housed in a walnut base with smoked plastic cover. Now I’m using vpi 16.5 vacuum record cleaning machine.
I like using a paint edger from Home Depot/Lowes. It's soft, has thousand of hairs that get everywhere. It can bring records that look like they were on the floor at a mosh pit back to life. My old lady thrifted a ratty dusty copy of "A Man and A Woman" soundtrack (I know, right...I like Priest, Budgie, GBH, Accept records..chicks). It sounded great with a few crackles. I think it gets in scratches too and cleans the debris as you go with the grooves.. I saw it on another record collector channel (SupraWes). Works GREAT.

I just bought a NOS Discwasher earlier today. I checked with the seller and the set seems to be from 2000, when Recoton owned the Discwasher brand and before the low-quality RCA brush came along. The brush is identical to the original D4 brush but the fabric is tan instead of black. Wish me luck.
I just recently came across a NOS DiscSet (containing the black-fabric Discwasher, D4+ fluid, the SC-2 stylus cleaner and cleaning fluid), so I ordered that too. Maybe I'll make a comparison of the two.
There was one reason why the Diskwasher was directional, if you wash the records "backwards" via the brush you could release dust and vinyl shavings back onto the record surface. Personally I would place a small mark on the new system and continue to clean records directionally as in the old system.
I have my moms’ old Discwasher D4, but it doesn’t have the instructions, so it looks like I’ve been using it wrong for years (didn’t know about the rotation to the dry spot. Thanks for showing the manual). The wood and fabric are in perfect condition, but the cardboard box has some teeth marks, courtesy of Dougie, the guinea pig I had back in back in the 90s.
Since the original D4+ it had fluid ran out decades ago, I use a cleaning solution that my local record store makes.

AEC (Audio Engineering Components) carbon fiber brush Made in England back in the eighties, like it more than any of the carbon fiber brushes on the market today. Also use a Music Hall WCS-3 with Last or Disc Doctor solution.
Loved this, but must admit we hadn’t heard of the dishwasher system. Still haven’t pulled the trigger on the Spin Clean, just couldn’t justify the $79 for what you get. However, we do use the Groove Washer you recommended years ago and does a great job. It’s tackled everything. We haven’t had any vinyl that were too terribly bad of shape fortunately.-Chris🎧

Great cleaner, had mine since whenever. When you run out of fluid simply use distilled water with a drop of isocol cos that’s basically that’s all it is folks...
Good tip. That's how I make my fluid as well. I also add the smallest amount of Photo-Flo.
I have the original Discwasher brush with the pad cleaning brush, stylus brush, red D4 bottle and wood storing case to store it all. I also have the original box and instruction booklet that came with it.
Discwasher is too time consuming for regular use. I used to use the original version only on very dirty/grimmy records and then left it to rest for most of the time. I eventually sold it with no regrets.
To effectively remove dust, I now use a much quicker method; I lightly spray distilled water on my carbon fibre brush and lift it off using a sweeping method. Removes 95% of dust, no print left and resolves static issue. Quick and easy
They also made the best demagnetizer ever for tape decks. Not the one that looks like a gun but the one that was an actual cassette that you fast forward and rewind to demagnetize.
I found my bottle of D4+ in my desk drawer and "googled" to reach your website. A good find for me and I just subscribed. Raised in the 1940s, I grew up listening to my father's collection of classical music on 78 RPM discs, and later I collected old one-sided 78 discs and the two sided ones.

I've thought about getting the current Groovewasher in the past, but I passed up on that system for the Gruv Glide system, which comes with two microfiber pads and some special aerosol spray stuff. Works pretty well.
Frank, have you ever used Gruvglide before? Most users swear by it. Definitely reduces or removes static.
