Been wanting to try growing these from seed for years now. Thanks for the info. If you have clay soil you're on the right track by amending with a bunch of composted organics, but to really speed thing along i also blend in a product called calcined clay. There's a whole bunch of name brands like Safe T Sorb, turface mvp, Pro's Choice sports fields. This looks like gravel but way better biologically. It helps keep your clay soil from compacting and allowing the organic material to get in between. This process is matured by the living organisms in the soil way after your done physically setting up the new soil state. Also, for plants that don't like "wet feet" ..Mounding up the soil even a couple inches does wonders for them.
I like your germination setup! That would probably work well starting strawberry seeds also. I have been working on a strawberry breeding project and one of the most time consuming parts is getting a strawberry plant from seed to fruit. So far my best turn around is two years from seed to see which plants will be keepers for propagation.
So far I haven't had the best luck with strawberry seeds. I looked it up and said try to winter sew and I did that 2 years in a row and had no luck so I keep wasting seeds. This year I'm going to try to do it in the early Spring
