I grew up in the desert and recently have fallen in love w taking care of cacti. I visited a sweet little cafe that sells them and there I found my old man cacti Gus and Vince. I absolutely adore their long hair and they are growing so fast. They smell so nice too! Since I’ve gotten a trio stouter one w hair that wraps around and a needle-less one too w just bits of hair and otherwise smooth. I’m in love! ❤ 🌵 🏜️ thank you for sharing your collection and tips!

I’ve been a cactus addict for 10 years now. The very first cactus I bought was a trichocereus grandiflorus I bought at Walmart. I named him Richard lol. He was a 4 inch little ball. I remember my little son and I went for a stroll through the garden center and I thought “this little cactus is so cute!”. Back then I had no idea how tall he’d get and how they grow pups extremely fast. And I had no idea how beautiful their flowers were until Richard bloomed these gorgeous ruby red flowers. I thought he’d stay a little ball. I had no clue he’d grow into this massive cactus lol. He’s huge now and he used to have loads of pups but in 2019 I separated them and gave the pups to friends and family. I kept 3 for myself and left one pup attached to him. But he’s never grown any more pups since then. Which I find weird. He’s the red star one like yours that we’ve talked about before in your other video. After I bought Richard I started to really like the Trichocereus species so I bought more and more and more. Eventually I wanted to learn more about them. I found your channel and I watched a bunch of your videos and I learned so much. I remember sowing trichocereus seeds while following your video. And I then got hooked on growing them from seed. Now I have this massive collection and I don’t think I’ll ever stop sowing and buying cacti and I absolutely love it! Best addiction in the world lol
haha so happy you are a Cactus addict too and it really is the BEST addiction in the world, we never want to be cured haha, and thats so fantastic to hear about Richard the Trichocereus grandiflorus getting you addicted, the flowers on the grandiflorus really are the most stunning, and so happy that you love Trichocereus so much too, and have a massive collection of cacti, it really is the most rewarding of passions and addictions to have haha, and it is definitely impossible to stop, we have our cactus society monthly meeting this afternoon and there is a plant sale hahaha, I know I will be too tempted to resist LOL! :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Thank you Lyn, for helping us so we don't have to learn everything about cacti "the hard way" ❣️❣️❣️ 🌸🌵💟🌵🌸 Me, I'm knowledgeable about plants in general, having grown "complicated" plants (perennials & house plants) from seed and cuttings for more decades than I like to think of... 🙃🤣 I'm pretty good with jungle cacti too... 😉 So it's these DESERT CACTI, that I only grew for a few years from I was 10 and onwards, that I need to get the hang of ... 👍 Your channel is THE BEST for my "gardening needs" now ❣️ So versatile and inspiring ❣️ 💟🌵🌸🌵💟
So happy you love my channel Brit :-D and thats awesome you have grown perennials and houseplants from seeds, and Jungle cacti are the most amazing with their incredible blooms, I wish the internet was around when I was younger haha, it would have made life so much easier when starting out growing desert cacti especially when trying to ID them, thanks so much Brit for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, a sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX

Hi Lynn its sooo true iam like that it's an awesome addiction and I was buying for early in my life and I am a member of our local cacti and succulent society. You always have room for one more or a few more in that case space is always an issue. People who are not cacti lovers will never understand the addiction ❤❤
haha Marlene :-D I am so happy that you are also a Cactus addict too, and so true people who don't love cacti really can't understand our prickly addiction haha, thats fantastic you are a member of your local cactus and succulent society, I have my cactus and succulent society monthly meet up tomorrow, and guess what its going to be ? cacti for sale hahaha, thanks so much Marlene for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Lol! Fun video topic. Yes, my name is James and I am a cactus-aholic! I'd add two more things to the list. First, just because it's sold at your local box store doesn't mean it can easily grow in your environment! I have killed many succulents and cacti...but I've made way more in cuttings, seedlings, and grafting. Second, there will always be new designer, fancy, imported plants with massive hybridization so be prepared for space and budget, AND know you may have challenges with identifying all your plants if you don't have a laboratory! 😮😂❤🌵
haha James :-D so happy you loved the video and you are a Cactus aholic too haha, and so true with having challenges identifying plants without a laboratory hahaha, thanks so much James for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday today XXXX
Great topic! Number 5 is definitely something you would like to have knowledge of! One never knows where the paths they take might lead them. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, once you're hooked, you're stuck. I became addicted to cacti when I was a teen. My Airforce enlisted parent's & I drove through the Sonoran Desert as we moved from Carswell AFB Fort Worth TX to McCord AFB in Washington State. Fell in love with the desert. I wish I had known that not all cacti need full sun with over 40c heat and no water. I fried so many beautiful specimens. But they all survived. They're all happy now. I'd like to live in Tucson, for real.
haha you really are :-D thanks so much Marie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
The addiction is very real. 😂 I rescued a tiny dying echinopsis from a flea market a couple of years ago and the way it came back to life with just a little bit of care was so inspiring to me. I've collected about fifty cacti and other succulents since then and I'm definitely not finished. 😂 Always enjoy your videos. 🤗💚🌵
Thats fantastic you rescued an Echinopsis and gave it your love and now you are cactus addicted too haha, and it really is the most amazing addiction to grow these awesome plants, thanks so much Line for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle XXXX
Another fab video, what a great idea for a subject! If only more people were addicted to plants, perhaps there wouldn't be any wars on... The second one, about repotting your plant to big, was one for me as well: it's how I immediately doomed my first gymno straight after I brought it in, and it was such a beautiful plant. It also took me a moment before I knew how to water them (and succulents), and I did have the internet so no excuse... Good plant vibes from down South, Nathalie
So happy you loved the video Nathalie :-D and so true if more people were addicted to growing these awesome plants they wouldn't have time to start these wars, and growing plants is so therapeutic too, I hope they never want to cure us of our plant obsession haha :-D thanks so much Nathalie for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Dublin for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Sorry for my broken English. Actually my real addiction started after I was seeing Lyn video on youtube,, My Weird Cactus Collection,, Before that I have 10 plants but now around 200. Today I'm happy with that thanks to Lyn video. I really, really love spending time with my cacti.

haha Robin :-D so happy you are plant addicted too, and hanging plants are so awesome as they don't take up any window or table space, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
I do enjoy my hobby. Keeping cacti exercises my patience and flexes my deferred gratification. Sure, there is a kick when something entirely new arrives, but the bigger kick for me is when something in my collection starts a new journey. Something like sprouting a few new pups (TBM), or throwing up unexpected flower buds (Leutchtenbergia), or as has recently occurred when a lanky and heavy Trichocereus fell over... slicing it up into sections, propagating them and watching what happens. Good video!
So happy you love the hobby of growing cacti too Zeke :-D cacti really are incredible plants and its the thrill of seeing new spines or new pups or buds that is so very exciting, so happy you enjoyed the video and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX

I am most definitely an addict! I started with 3 tiny cacti in 5.5cm pots which grew very quickly and now have grown into a collection of around 100 cacti and succulents (Echeveria being my favourite). That might sound quite a small collection but I only began around 2 years ago when I moved into my two bedroomed flat! I actually bought another cactus home from the supermarket today! I don't know where I am going to put it! 😂
hahaha Tracy :-D so happy to hear that you are a Cactus and Succulent Addict too :-D and thats awesome you have around 100 plants, and thats fantastic you bought another cactus today, it really is just too tempting haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Hiya Lyn ! How's your Summer going? I loved hearing about your Prickly History ! You're an amazing cactus lover I love your videos, I hope you are both keeping well. Were you still planning to move house? 💚🌵🌿
Hi Marion :-D so happy you love the videos, and the Summer is going well except for the awful wet Summer we had, its been lovely and sunny for the past couple of days though, we are not going to be moving house now as thankfully our Landlord is not going to be selling the house yet, and it means we can plan ahead and get a new polytunnel a nice clear better one to replace our green one, thanks so much Marion for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Hans and me for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Hi Martin :-D awwww this awful wet weather has been a nightmare, I still have them outside, thankfully my big old one and my other two are against the fence and are sheltered from most of the heavy rain, but there have been a few times I had to move them temporarily back into the polytunnel due to the high winds and torrential downpours, the weather was much better Thurs and fri but its back to the torrential downpours and thunder and lightening today LOL! :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Oh Lyn, you've now got me really worried - especially points 1 & 5. I tend not to buy cacti as plants (although I have bought a few over time) but prefer to grow them from seed. I have over 200 seedlings, the tallest and oldest of which are about 7cm tall but maybe half of them are only 2-3mm at the moment. Just yesterday, I sowed 6 new batches of seed. Recently I've focussed more on germinating seeds of small cacti but I am becoming painfully aware that in a year or two I will not have space, as most of my older seedlings are Trichocereus species which will become very large. And among yesterday's plantings were some Carnegia Gigantea (Saguaro) seeds, which if I can get them to adulthood will become huge over a long period of time. I've also got a load of Pachycereus Pringlei (Mexican Cardon) which seem to be growing amazingly fast right now, even though they were only sown on the 29th May. To be honest though, germinating from seed has been immensely fun, and probably a fundamental part of point 5 in your video for me. And I'm learning a lot along the way. The aim is to go from seed to viable seed for a particular species, then I can say I've succeeded with that species. But one reason I have so many seedlings is that I underestimated my ability to germinate them. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be. Getting them to adulthood......only time will tell!
Thats so awesome you have over 200 cactus seedlings, and growing from seed is the most amazing and also I find the most addictive way to grow cacti haha, and thats fantastic you have grown Trichocereus seedlings and have sown Saguaro seeds, and I really love to grow Trichocereus from seed too, mine are all desperate to be repotted again as they grow so fast, I know that every time I pot them on they grow a few more inches in a couple of months, my tallest Trichocereus is 7ft tall and I bought it 27 years ago from a guy who had grown it from seed, it was a small few cms high when I got it and its huge now, and it would be much taller if I had repotted it more often haha, Hans also has a tall Trichocereus in our yard that is almost 7ft tall to, and its one he has grown from seed 50 years ago when he lived in Sweden, he had to chop it numerous times when he was living in Sweden due to numerous house moves, I really love the tall growing cacti so much, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
I wish you told me how fast some cacti grow but kinda nice to see some of them just double in size and Just got wishlist plants in the mail its a rare thing in my life but i made a video unboxing them and you hans and daz got me in to cacti so i blaim you for alot of my daily joy of cacti adiction
YAY thats awesome you have just uploaded an unboxing video, Hans and I will be watching later, we loved watching unboxing vids, and so happy to hear that Hans and I and Daz got you 'hooked' on Cacti haha :-D it really is so addictive and growing these plants is so much fun, thanks so much Anders for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Hi Lynn!💚love your videos, always interesting and informative!!!👍 I have a question about the seed pod I've been lucky to have ripening on my thanksgiving cactus 🌵.I have only 2 seed pods out of at least 20 attempts across pollinate!😂my question is,can u get seeds from one of the pods which is white. The other pod is bright 🩷. Will the pod have seeds in it? .would it be considered not viable because it's white? I'm going to open the 2 soon ,both are over a year old!💚. Thank you,I appreciate your help!💚👍
Thats fantastic you have two seed pods on your Thanksgiving cactus Ellyn :-D WOW I have not seen one that is white, it will be interesting to see if there is seeds in there, usually the pods go pink when they are ready to harvest, but if its been a year it will be ready for the picking, if there are seeds in the white pod I think they should still be viable, it will be interesting to see, keep me updated on how you get on with the seeds Ellyn, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
It definitely is an addiction one I never thought I would have because I never liked cactus ever, but one day I got on Etsy and saw the cutest little 2 inch cacti! Now I have about 12 different cacti and bought my first 6 Lithops too. I don’t think I have to worry about them getting your size though since their not living in the sunlight….but who knows. I was so excited to see 2 new buds popping out that I didn’t expect either. Thank you for your wonderful videos!
So happy that you agree with the addiction Shanti :-D and thats fantastic that you now have 12 different cacti, and Lithops are awesome plants to grow too, so happy you love my videos, thanks so much Shanti for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
i got myself a clipping from a spineless prickly pear cactus five to ten years ago and took it out the pot and planted it in the ground. the thing is insane with how many paddles it can produce in a few nights.
It really is amazing how fast some of these cacti can grow, and Prickly pear can grow so fast with all the new pads they can produce in one growing season, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX
hahahaha so happy to hear that you are also addicted too Grainne :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
haha I think I would have concentrated on growing the more smaller species of cacti as they take up much less space, but I really do love the tall growing ones, haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
I started to grow cactus in grammar school and have one cactus that is over sixty years old. I bought cactus books and visited cactus collections and realized that most cactus grow better in the ground and not in containers. I live in an area where you can grow cactus in the ground. I know that you live in a cold damp climate and have to grow your cactus in a heated greenhouse and your cactus look great.
Thats so awesome you started to grow cactus when you was in Grammer school John :-D and WOW with having a cactus that is 60 years old, thats so special, yes its definitely a challenge growing cactus in the Irish and U.K climate, and this Summer has ben the wettest Summer on record for Ireland, it would be a dream to grow them in the ground and not have to worry about the frost and rains, thanks so much John for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday today XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon I thank you for your reply and waiting for the tropical storm today. The Southern Californian deserts will have a large amount of rain and flash floods which will include Death Valley. The majority of rainfall occurs in the winter months and a little rain falls in the summer months and cactus native to Southern California need winter rain.
@@johnwakamatsu3391 Oh no John, we have heard on the news about Storm Hilary, I hope that the storm passes safe for you and for everyone, and that everything will be ok, keep me posted and stay as safe as possible XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon The rain has been constant during the day and should increase in the evening. There was an earthquake in the afternoon, but there was very little damage. I will give an update tomorrow morning.
The storm has left Los Angeles and most of the flooding occurred in the desert or mountain areas northeast of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles rainfall was 2.5 inches, but some areas received 10 inches.
I started with 2 cacti 5 years ago and now ended up with over 100 , still getting more and more also through propagation and space really is the biggest problem for me as I have only one balcony and they keep growing. I even stared to irrigate them less to keep them as small as possible cuz I absolutely have no room. Even the plastic sheet greenhouse which I install every year on the balcony for overwintering them is not enough anymore
Thats fantastic that you now have 100 cacti haha, and so happy to hear that you are cactus addicted too, yes space is always the biggest issue and I keep many of my tall growing cacti under potted haha, as I know if I repot them they grow another few feet literally overnight haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful new week XXXX

Addiction...............obsession..............maybe its partly our OCD personalities ? I've had several nice collections over the years. For one reason or another they went away. Am starting over again for the 3rd or 4th time at age 68 after a battle with cancer. Only had one 25 year old Victoria Regina agave left and it is in sad shape. Not sure I can save it 😞
Thats so wonderful you are starting up your collection again William :-D and growing these amazing plants really is so therapeutic for us especially when dealing with health issues, its onwards and upwards for you now, and I totally agree with our OCD personalities haha, I also have a huge crystal addiction, and have collected thousands over the years, thanks so much William for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and Health and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
I am definitely a mild cactus addict, if I had more space I would be a full on cactus hoarder. I've started growing cacti from seeds recently as a new project that takes up less space. My grandparents live on a property with SO MANY giant, old cacti! Some have to be at least 40-60 years old! I often go snag cacti + succulents from gram :) Your collection is beautiful + inspiring! Would love to know if you use fertilizer on your cacti + if so, what type?
haha so happy to hear that you are a mild cactus addict too :-D and thats so awesome you are growing cacti from seeds, and WOW with your grandparents living on a property with many giant cacti, that must be incredible to see, so happy you love my collection, I love to use Tomato fertiliser to feed my cacti, and I use it at half the strength that they recommend using for tomato plants, this is because tomato feed contains more potash than standard fertilisers and this really helps to encourage more blooming, I love to use Tomato feed by either Maxicrop or Tomorite as they are both good quality brands, here is a link to a video I have made on why I like to use tomato feed for my cacti: th-cam.com/video/Y-TlXfEuiGw/w-d-xo.html thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon yes my grandma loves cacti too i think she passed the appreciation to me. THANK YOU! going to watch the video rn. I've heard about tomato feed for cacti but wasn't totally sure. I used to use tomato feed when i grew mmj, good to know cacti appreciate it as well! i'm going to try growing williamsii soon, am going to start looking into mineral-based substrates for them to hopefully prevent potential rot. any tips for ingredients to use? appreciate your insight + good energy, thank you!
@@hesherette Thats fantastic you are going to be growing Lophophora williamsii, they are really awesome cacti and one of my complete favourites haha, I make my own soil mix up of 3 equal parts of Loam, Pumice ( or Perlite or grit ) and horticultural sand. Hi Lynn ,my name is Paula. I need to know what to do with my San Pedro ,they are 8mo old so now what to do leave them in high humidity or lower the humidity. Please let me know. Thank you.
Hi Paula if they are 8 months old you can definitely lower the humidity, they only need the higher humidity during the germination and very early seedling stage, Happy growing, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend ahead XXXX
Mine are about the same age, possibly a couple of months older. I don't keep them in high humidity, although I probably keep the soil a lot damper overall than I do with other species. They are more mountain cacti than desert cacti, so not quite as susceptible to damp as some other species. But humidity depends so much on where you live - what for me is a dry environment might be a very humid environment for someone else. I've damaged some of my seedlings by putting them in bright sun when they weren't ready for it. The ones that have done best have stayed under grow lights. Just make sure you don't change their growing conditions too suddenly - dry them out gradually, and expose them to increased light gradually. That will avoid stressing them, and if you see signs of stress you can change the conditions before it's too late.
Hey Lynn, In your video at the 1.30 mark there’s a cactus that has multiple green stem’s hanging down the sides of the pot that almost look like bananas what’s the name of this cactus? Thankyou 👍👍

I just love your passion! My guilty pleasure has always been rocks and crystals. I've only recently taken up the cactus habit and watching your videos is very encouraging. I started off with some air plants and I only killed two before I found out the proper way to care for them. I now have a dozen and they're doing just great. 5 Things I wish I knew BEFORE I started growing Cacti :-D

The addiction is very real. 😂 I rescued a tiny dying echinopsis from a flea market a couple of years ago and the way it came back to life with just a little bit of care was so inspiring to me. I've collected about fifty cacti and other succulents since then and I'm definitely not finished. 😂

Good plant vibes from down South,
Nathalie

I do enjoy my hobby. Keeping cacti exercises my patience and flexes my deferred gratification. Sure, there is a kick when something entirely new arrives, but the bigger kick for me is when something in my collection starts a new journey. Something like sprouting a few new pups (TBM), or throwing up unexpected flower buds (Leutchtenbergia), or as has recently occurred when a lanky and heavy Trichocereus fell over... slicing it up into sections, propagating them and watching what happens. Good video!
