Husqvarna 385xp Junk Pile Saw Rebuilds, An Alternative to Kit Saws! Is it better to revive OEM Saws?

  • A discussion relative to cost and issues typical with junk pile saws...and SOME work around's,
    This really is a conversation about the concept of finding a logger or dealer where you can get a pile of worn out OEM pro level saws and boil them into running saws for your self and selling some to pay for the build effort....actually end up with way better saws than Aftermarket for more elbow grease but much less money over the duration of the project. AN alternative to kit saw for those with the sources of saws and skills to completely rebuild them. NOT for everyone. First not everyone has loggers to ping off of and a good parts supply. AND not everyone has a location along with tools and skills to do this level of rebuilding. AND kit saw are cheap and clean..:) Clean being a huge plus...:))
    Another point is selling a rebuilt OEM saw lets you sleep better. The quality of the parts is there and a OEM saw is in fact an easier sale to make. ANY time you ha e AM parts in a saw, first you HAVE to let a potential customer know that if your have any integrity at all. And AM parts will most certainly effect the resale of a saw. For your own personal saw? That's a different story, you can ethically do what ever trips your trigger...as you are the person running it.

    Great video! Did not know whether to look left or right. And your point is made, now the only thing to do is find yourself the three dead saws...

    To add to a previous comment, I too have done some plastic welding with great success using a flat tip on the soldering iron and found that old zip-ties make excellent filler rod when the surface is too thin and needs a little more to it. Great vid!

    Trick I learned long ago: Take a copper soldering iron tip or heavy copper wire or brass rod and hammer it flat...makes the plastic repair much easier and stronger by not grooving the seam.

    I've "welded" plastic the same way. I've used plastic forks as "Filler" rod. I bet you could cut up an old gas tank into thin strips so color would match.

    I see you hang up your weedeaters by their cutting head. my thoughts, exactly, because it allows the grease from the cutting head to get on the shift. hanging them up by their motor will keep any grease from getting on the shift. my 128L husky always hangs by its cutting head and I use EP2, synthetic grease for the head, which is the same grease I used to use on my 25 year old FS-76, Stihl.

      ALSO depends on the state of the said saw...some are beyond repair..:)

    Hey are these flex hones worth the money ? I need to salvage cylinders from saws that aren't available such as a 2100xp etc

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, while they can only deal with cylinders where the plating in the bore hasn't been compromised, ( no gouges into or flaking off of the plating) they can save hours of time on "scratched" cylinders.

    Curious about the process on the cylinder... hone them and oil to prep for use with no wash off in between or was it skipped in the video?

    You are lucky that original cylinder and piston are that cheap over there. Here in The Netherlands a net set for a 385 is 381 euro (400+ Dollar) 160 dollar is much more viable to buy a new set over using after marked set.

    Hi Walt nice video, I have a question about all your dead and used saws. Do you buy them or do people give them to you? I have looked on ebay for parts saws and they are to expensive to rebuild and pay the shipping. Just curious.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before I started doing repairs, I would go to dealers and ask...especially the ones that have been around a while. Most had junk piles. Now they just land in the shop...sometimes I don't even know who dropped them in the milk house (where I have folks leave and pick up saws when we aren't on a compatible schedule
