    Thank you for showcasing such lovely examples of early Walking Horse breeding. I just wish we could get back to the simplicity and purity of the 1940's and 30's gaits! I hope this gets more hits in the future-- you really put together a nice video. :)

    Beautiful breed. The stepping to get weird in the 1960s, and out of hand in 1973. Go back to the beginning.

    They looked much, much better in the early days. Now the canter is just plain grotesque and the movement is so labored that they look like they are trying to escape quicksand. Also, the earlier walkers were more refined and looked a bit more like ASBs than the current ones, with less sickle hocks.

    very interesting. To me if you can't post or ride a 5 gaited saddlebred... The Tennessee Walking horse is the way to go. I had one his papers were burnt in a fire. he was 17 when I bought him, then sold him to a stable in Iowa. I found his new owners & he was still giving lessons to children when he was like 21 y/o! the best horse I ever owned!

    Things start looking weirder and weirder after the 1950's. Such a beautiful breed, such kind horses -- why exhibit them with the "packages"? The canter work of the early horses was lovely. The later horses, the canter becomes labored and painful; to watch.

      @tracyjohnson5023 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes in the early years. But by the 60s you can it was changing. Action devices were added and heavier shoes evolved into the padded monstrosities. I can definitely tell the wonderful rocking chair canter got rougher with the higher knee action.

    • @XxShellyW13xX
      @XxShellyW13xX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tracyjohnson5023 I was wondering about that when seeing the horses into the later 60's and early 70's. Some just looked like they were having to lift their front feet higher and were moving a bit slower. Not all, but to me it just seemed that the horses were working harder than in previous very early years. The early years even the horses looked like they were having a good time strutting their stuff!

    Heavens, I was at that 1969 horse show,was a kid, and man the skies opened up, and actually flooded the whole place! The drains in the ring got plugged from so much runoff and the horses were nearly swimming, we were nearly swimming to get to our cars! lol! I can remember seeing a wallet float by with money sticking out of it, being a kid I wanted to grab it, hehe. Cars were stuck in the instant mud, people couldn't even get out of the parking lot, it was nuts, but fun in a crazy way!

  • @millsixstudios

    LOOK the early ones walked naturally! Looky looky there!!
    Soring has to END. No more cruelty in disguise of a so-called “sport” - today’s championships are a grotesque and pitiful mockery of the legendary Walking Horse Champions of the 1940s and 1950s.

    @GhostFearMe I was honored to help care for Shaker's full brother, Shaker's Southern Heir, kids could crawl over and under him and he never cared, when his owner would breed him, she never had to put him in tie downs or twitch him or any of the horrible things I've seen others do to their studs, if it looked like the mare would kick, she'd calmly call him back and he'd go right to her. Greatest horse I was ever around!

    There is no feeling in the world like riding a horse like one of these. The power and control that moves underneith you , all of that motion and sheer mass in perfect time is unforgetable. When you know what it feels like and you are fortunate enoulgh to watch a true champion in the ring your hair will stand up on the back of your neck. These horses are all heart and only want to please their master.

      Translation: There is no feeling in the world like riding a horse who is in pain to the extent of one of these. The power and fear that moves underneath you, all of that motion and sheer mass struggling to perform a man-made gait is unforgettable. When you know what it feels like and you are unfortunate enough to watch a tortured horse in the ring your hair will stand up on the back of your neck. These horses are all heart and of such good temperament that they will not fight back when their legs are drenched in caustic chemicals and their feet forced on hideously heavy blocks.

    @mschris32 After looking at teh video again, it looks like after 1953 things began to go downhill. Noticed beginning of pads being used. Also note the reletively loose rein and a more balanced riding position in the early days. Later, riders began getting a "chair seat" and riding with a hunched back.
    I'll take my natural TWH's any day over many of todays "pacers".

    It's amazing how they've gone from from a slim, fine body like Strollin' Jim, into the thick, baroque Walking Horses who are winning WGC titles today.. Ha, I guess their trainers need a drafty horse to push through those nasty weights on their feet and the shanks on their mouth. Personally I love the movement of all WGC's between '39 and '56. It's a shame what the Walking Horse industry has become- gives us good people a bad name.

    Sad to watch the change from such beautiful motion reduced to labored movement because of change in shoeing and other practices.
    Love the breed. Worked with. Few ex big lick horses. It was sad to see the damage done to them from chemicals and stacks. But still they had hearts of gold even after that such a testament to the nature of this breed.
    Please stop .
    Hope they leave big lick in the past. Why stick to something that isn’t even close to natural.
    Coming from Morgan’s I don’t demonize weighted shoes but I do demonize the use of pain, too long a toe, overly training device, over padded and over weighted shoes being done.
    Please listen for the horses sake. End certain practices in the showing it’s not worth it.

    You can see from 1955 on the canter changed. Gone was the ground covering gait and more of the up and down motion moving forward very little. So sad to see the modern version compared to what the more original gaits were.

      @HensOnly 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      And you can see the topline of the old and the modern. More slope and the rider placement moved farther and farther from its withers to near their hips. And the modern rider acted like he's hunching over.

    Wow what a difference to the TWH of today. I think todays twh movements just look unnatural and forced. The horses in these videos look much more relaxed. Also the riders are sitting upright, not slouched forward with their legs nearly back to the horses flank. Honestly, twh riders today look like what I see when teaching people to ride for the first time and are nervous.

      actually it's the opposite- todays Walkers are more often seen NATURAL, it was the horses like in this video that were forced to wear artificially weighted, several in tall shoes, plus the blistering chemical literal "soring" on their legs that make them move the way they do. It's outof fear and pain that they move the way they do in these types of shows. It's severe cruelty. Look up TWH and crielty practices to do some research. This is anything but natural. Wish I could be proud, Ebony's Masterpiece is/was my horses sire. I am still proud of my beautiful boy though.

    And about the shoes... Do you even know how much damage a normal shoe causes? They did alot of research with shod and unshod horses and how much impact a normal shoe causes to the horses leg. When you know these proven facts you won't think so lightly anymore about this matter. Sharp bits? 'Metal in the mouth' by Dr. Robert Cook. Read it and tell me if those bits aren't sharp anymore. If you have any other scientific proven fact that shows that your right. Show me.
