    I really needed to hear this. I have stage one breast cancer and I’ve been beating myself up over how I could have caused this. I’m thin and I’ve always eaten healthy, although I do like my chocolate. It seems that if you’re meant to get cancer, you just will regardless of what you do or eat.

      You're absolutely right, and it's crucial to remember that developing cancer is not your fault. Cancer is a complex and multifaceted disease influenced by a variety of factors, many of which are beyond our control. Your lifestyle choices to eat healthy and stay active are commendable and contribute to your overall well-being, but they don't determine whether or not you'll get cancer. Be kind to yourself during this time. You're not alone in facing this challenge, and there's a community here to support you.

    Thank you so much for answering this question. Lots of misinformation on the internet. It is really hard to eliminate sugar, and many people who claim to really haven't, and yes, guilt is rough on top of cancer. I was taught in junior high that all cells need sugar (fuel) to function. Since cancer and lymphedema, I have cut back on processed foods and try to get most of my sugar from fruits and vegetables....but hey birthday cake once in a while...

    I did keto diet during the last portion of my neoadjuvant chemotherapy (4 x AC and 12 x paclitaxol dose dense), and my ILC did a complete pathological response. I was stage 3, grade 1 multifocal, ER/PR+, HER2-. Statically, I had 2% chance of the chemo working on my breast tumors. The response to treatment was outstanding and great prognosis. I still will have a SMX and 30 x rads but I could not be happier! I basically maintained my level of insulin stable (low) during the entire 5 months of chemo, eat high healthy fats, tons of veggies and conservative portion of protein. I’m not a doctor but I read a lot to prepare and empower myself. It worked for me!

    Once I received the BC diagnosis in August last year, I switched to healthy keto adapted to anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory style. Excluded fruit except for a bit of berries, all dairy except for a bit of butter once a week and maybe goat milk yoghurt a couple of times a month, reduced meat to 2 times per week. Reduced animal fat and protein. Avoid lectins and oxalates. Practice intermittent fasting 18:6 6-7 days per week. As a result I dropped 30 kg, brought my liver in order (good bye estrogen dominance causing BC), brought my GI in order (that's 70% of the immune system), candida and ovarian cysts are gone completely. I feel great even though I'm on medication causing one to feel awful. Cancer markers show that the treatment is going well. That's my proof that sugar causes various problems with organs and systems, which, in addition to other risk factors, cause cancer. I do understand that doctors are often bullied by the medical system to not say much about nutrition or say that cancer patients can eat whatever they want, but patients are also responsible for own research for the sake of one's health. Anti-cancer nutrition is great support to treatment and must continue for as long as we live because pills will be over after a while, and there must be another system to ensure cancer doesn't come back. That system is not just nutrition, it includes exercise, sleep, stress management and mindset, all this at the same time.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds as if you've made many changes to your diet and that you're feeling great. Just for clarity for other members of our community, eating sugar does not cause breast cancer or breast cancer recurrence. On the other hand, limiting calories from fat and sugar often helps people lose weight, decreases fatty liver, and helps people feel better.

    • @lindajones4849

      Great job with changing your diet and integrating fasting. You might enjoy Dr Robert Lustigs talks on you tube about the dangers of ultraprocessed foods which have pharmacological doses of sugar. As you said, do your research and think for yourself. I have breast cancer also. I am on a low carb diet, calories mildly inhibited to keep IGF1 low which inhibits growth stimulation. So far2years and no reoccurence. My oncologist is thrilled for me. He was worried because I politely declined aromatase inhibitors. I wasn't sure about that but my right is normal and I already have symptoms of low estrogen .Thankfully my oncologists asked if he could monitor me closely during this plan and so far so good. Everyone needs to make their own decisions, I am not suggesting people copy me.

      Congratulations on your comprehensive management of your cancer. I believe that building health is an important part of treating illness. Traditional cancer treatment is debilitating and diet , sleep and exercise can help recovery and minimize the chance of reoccurrence. Since the causes of cancer are probably multi factorial it makes sense to cover all bases even if the randomized controlled trials are not all in. Can eating a healthy diet really hurt?

      @tommy7fun 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do not be afraid to eat what you enjoy. There's no evidence that shows eating sugar causes cancer. Some people seem to take pleasure in telling others not to eat sugar. Especially if they know you enjoy sweets. Ignore these dopes. They're sadists. My wife had a lumpectomy & also radiation. She did very well and I'm sure you will too. Several of our friends who always ate very healthy ended up with cancer, and many others who eat junk all the time are as healthy as can be. It's being obese that raises your risk, so it's important to keep your weight down. But eating sugar in moderation is not going to give you cancer. Enjoy the foods you love and stop listening to people who my wife calls "Kill Joys". Good Luck with radiation. My wife had no side effects except for a sunburned breast. Her radiologist highly recommended she use "Cera Ve" skin cream or lotion. She kept using it every day and got the best results. It's not harsh and not greasy like some other stuff they tell you to use. Use Cera Ve. And while you're resting I hope you will enjoy a bowl of ice cream. (smile). I wish you the very Best.

      Of course. This is why so many people are interested in dietary modifications. It's important to remember, of course, that many people do not have access to healthful foods. Your message is compassionate but I think the downsides of sugar in general, would contribute to more health problems. When addressing such a serious situation, I would think gut health really matters, even if there is no direct correlation because we now know so many health issues appear to begin in the gut. But you are so right that guilt has no place in the conversation or shame.

    I want to suggest that people listen to Robert Lustig , MD who has numerous UTube talks about the dangers of processed food which is usually laced with high amounts of added sugar. The food companies add this to make you want to come back for more ( added sugar is potentially addictive). I don't agree that everything in moderation is ok. If you are talking about whole foods you are probably right. Whole foods have sugar but the sugar comes with fiber that slows absorption of sugar. Processed food has no fiber , sugar is quickly absorbed, insulin rises which drives weight gain and overweight/ obesity is a risk factor for cancer. Be very careful with processed foods look at the label for the amount of added sugar.The American Heart Association recommends alimit of 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day ( about 25 grams) for an adult woman. One Pop tart can put you over that limit and if you add some cake and cookies you are really over the top . If you are consuming processed foods daily you are probably consuming way to much added sugar. Read the amount of added sugar it may shock you. I checked the label of a piece of dairy free / gluten free cake at Whole Foods : 50 grams of sugar. If everything in moderation is ok why are obesity and diabetes and non alcoholic fatty liver disease rising world wide? I do concede that eating a piece of birthday cake is not a reason for feeling guilty but I think putting restrictions on consuming processed foods, esp concentrated sweets is a good idea for overall health.

I tried to eat as healthy as possible (would take berries, nuts,green tea popsicles I made to help keep my mouth cold which helped reduce cold sores... Instead of candy or whatever during my chemo sessions), but that being said, I also splurged on the pink drink and lemon loaf now and then! Do what you got to do to get yourself through it. It sounds trite, but take it one day at a time... Just keep knocking those sessions out, and hang in there. Once you get past the midpoint, you can see it getting easier! Sending you big hugs!

      Eating what you enjoy in moderation is not going to give you cancer. Stop listening to fools who enjoy depressing others. They're unhappy people and so they want you to be unhappy.

      Red meat does not promote cancer recurrence. We have a video coming out soon about meat and cancer.

    When you say avoid sugar in ultra processed food, in America that means no sugar.

      Ultraprocessed foods have processed sugars like high-fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, dextrose, and fruit juice concentrates. These added sugars are what give the high sugar content of many ultra-processed products like sodas, candies, baked goods, and sweetened breakfast cereals. Ultra-processed foods are the primary source (nearly 90%) of added sugars in the typical American diet. In addition to sugar, ultraprocessed foods contain food substances from whole foods like oils, fats, starches, and protein isolates. They also typically contain additives like colors, flavors, emulsifiers, and other cosmetic additives to make them tasty and to extend shelf-life. So yes, sugar and then some.
