there's something so interesting about how glitches and unintended movement have become so ingrained in SM64 culture that it just feels like a regular extension to mario's moveset.
Ikr ?! The glitchy fest moves and weird physics about the game is what i love about mario 64 gameplay and i don't find that in other games i play
True. This is why I can't imagine SM64 ever getting a good official remake, Nintendo would see this as something that needs to be patched and ruin the fun.
@@Stormkyleis It already happened with 64ds.
@@fespadea8263still waiting for that good official remake
If Mario would've been a rocket, a set of stairs would've been his launch station.

It's funny how a game can be so enjoyable, but that's because it was programmed with so many glitches in so many places in the code. It reminds us that imperfection can be more than the perfection you try to obtain.
Being the first 3d platformer EVER, it was fate that this would happen. Like Half life 2s insane physics. Any game that pulls a "first time" in a certain field, glorious glitches happen
It really depends lol
BLJ is cool, invisible walls aren't
Good point, glitches can enhance the game play, make a new way to play. It can also hinder the game experience. My thoughts, does it make the game funner? Keep it in. Does it make the game less fun, take it out. Um, but you know every now in then you have the rare chance of hitting an invisible wall, it can also make you laugh and think what the heck. @@ssg-eggunner
@@Genzaijh well idk man, an invisible wall showing up will probably be only funny once
@@ssg-eggunner Well what I meant to say is there are some cases where invisible walls are very thin ( so the hit box to hit them is very small. I think if let's say you hit it once in 100 tries then it won't bother you that often. If you know where it is and how to avoid it and see someone else bonk on it, you'll laugh. But ya your right, if it's something you'd bonk on every time and it is an area you pass by a lot it can get really annoying/ frustrating quick.

Dude I'm not even a Homestuck fan. Why do I know what this is referencing ._.
There's enough here that you could turn this into an incredible machine type toy. You don't control Mario, he instead moves automatically or in response to objects/geometry, and the goal is to complete puzzles by setting down pieces to move him to the star.

It's incredible the amount of free form gameplay that this engine allows.
One of my favorite aspects of video games are when unintended gameplay techniques emerge from bugs or manipulating how the game works - Things like bunny hopping in FPS, rocket jumping, and many of the Mario 64 techniques shown here. Like its just such a creative way to manipulate and play around the games rules. That same attitude goes towards speed running too.
My favourite one is the wavedash that went from what Melee devs thought was a funny quirk to a common thing in platform fighters.
I play Zelda 64 randomizers entirely because the glitches make those games so much fun.
So good! This video also made me think how SM64 doesn’t have a 1up system for jumping on multiple enemies heads in a row
None of the 3D Marios of this gameplay style do, neither 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy (Odyssey too but that doesn't have lives anyway, and yes Galaxy is part of this "style" in terms of base gameplay, even if it's more linear in terms of level/objective design), although Galaxy and Odyssey do have homages to it in specific "scripted" moments like the Yoshi Head planet covered in Goombas in Galaxy or jumping on 8 micro-goombas giving you a heart in Odyssey, but in general gameplay none of these games have that. That's a mechanic mainly unique to the 2D Mario gameplay style (which 3D Land and World also follow).
There's a LOT of stuff like this, where there are very established conventions that all the games following the classic "Super Mario Bros." gameplay style mainly present in the 2D games have that are all completely or largely absent in the 3D "Mario 64" gameplay style games. Basically, there's two main Mario gameplay styles that are essentially entirely different from each other with different conventions and not that much in common beyond just being platformers where you can jump on things, there's what I call the "Super Mario Bros." gameplay style which is in all the official 2D Marios as well as 3D Land/World, and there's what I call the "Super Mario 64" gameplay style (I named these two after their debut games) which is in 64, Sunshine, the Galaxies, and largely Odyssey, though Odyssey kinda tries to merge the two together, probably due in part to coming right off the development of 3D World.
Note that this is distinct from level design, which is what most people talk about such as with the "linear vs. sandbox Mario" discussions, as the Galaxies have mostly more linear levels but the base gameplay and mechanics are in line with the 64 style, same with linear Mario 64 romhacks, and it's also not inherently a 2D vs. 3D thing either, as while most of the Super Mario Bros style games are 2D, there's two that are 3D, and while none of the official 2D games follow the Mario 64 style, the fangame Super Mario 63 is an example of a 2D Mario 64-style game.
I believe if you jump on monty moles 8 times in a row you get a 1up actually
@@legoboy7107Galaxy does give you 1-ups for jumping on enemies 8 times.
@@jimmyjohnjoejr.9020 In general situations? It does on the Space Junk Yoshi planet with Goombas on it as well as the giant Koopa Troopas in Galaxy 2's Supermassive Galaxy, but those have a unique special climbing-octave sound effect to them that defeating enemies otherwise doesn't have in Galaxy, and a special counter in Galaxy 1's case there, giving the impression more of a scripted special case than the general rule. Same with the Chimp Romp challenges in Galaxy 2, those also are special circumstances with another climbing octave sound and also a points chain system.
Outside of these scenarios those things that indicate the presence of a 1-up chain mechanic are completely absent, implying the mechanic itself is too or at least isn't intended to really be a thing. Even if it does still technically work outside of these scenarios, which honestly now that I think about it more it probably does and I'll willingly assume I'm wrong (at least in Galaxy 2's case), there's very very few intended moments where you could ever actually pull it off and no associated sound design, so in design/practice it might as well just be "scripted" moments anyway just as the sound/visual effects would imply, even if it technically does exist in code.
Galaxy 2 is also an interesting case where it actively tries to mimic 2D "Super Mario Bros" style stuff a lot more than Galaxy 1 and prior including re-introducing elements from that style that weren't previously present, so I wouldn't be surprised if this could also be the kind of thing that's different between the two games. But regardless, while I very well could have been completely wrong about how much this mechanic technically exists in the Galaxy games, it's very obvious it's not really intended to be much of an important thing in their design outside of these very specialized scenarios and thus _in practice_ most of the time isn't really different from 64 and Sunshine.
I hope your optimized original SM64 comes out soon, I'm dying to relive my childhood in all its perfectly redone glory!

Local bodybuilder plays around with new romhacking tools instead of deadlifting. In other news the Nintendo assassins are reassessing their prospects for the latest job.
"A Mario Maker 3D wouldn't work" - Grand Poo Bear
I mean, anyone could say that's dumb even if this didn't exist, there are many games where you can create a 3D environment spanning years back. Not being able to imagine manipulating a 3D environment with a game's UI and required simplicity is a lack of creativity, not a testiment to its impossibility.
The problem is that Nintendo leans alot to casual audiences
The issue is that casuals might not comprehend what they could do with it
We already have little timmies making levels with enemy spam
now imagine with Mario Maker 3D
@@ssg-eggunner i mean, itl be slightly improved from what some kid might make in roblox studio in what they can make, 3d isnt really that crazy to comprehend

Rovert's Mario builder 64 looks really cool but the grid system seems more restrictive than mario 64 maker that you created like 7+ years ago. It's probably for performance because it prevents overdraw or something but I liked playing the PJ64 savestates of everyone's ridculously laggy levels back then
i think that decision was made just for ease of use. my mario maker used all dynamic collision while this one here builds permanent collision on level start. thats really the main difference lag wise. doing permanent collision back then in binary just wasn't very reasonable.
At least invisible walls will be a lot less common lol

cant wait for RetroAchievements to make an insane, no-fun achievement set from this somehow.
elaborate?
Who?
@@LandonEmma Retroachievments basically adds achievements to retro games that didn't have achievements back in the day. Just make an account on their website and link it with whatever emulator your using and you'll get achievements on all your old games almost as if Nintendo didn't have a stick up their butt about console wide achievements in their games.
@@caoistico669 I think RetroAchievements creates achievements you can earn in older games when you play in certain emulators, and presumably they lean towards bad and unfun achievements.

I don't know man, I'm absolutely loving Only Up. Right now I'm learning the layout, stepping on different textures behave differently with Mario's movement mechanics. So I'm just trying to learn all this. Since I get better I'm going to start reducing the save states I just to get through the level. Watching Kaze play through the level helps a lot though because there were some sections I had difficulty to figure out how to go through them. I don't know, I feel like once you've mastered the basi move set slowly going through this mod isn't so difficult. But you need patience. Honestly it looks like the tutorial video he did, he didn't make it all in one go. The video cuts out about 3 or 4 times. Honestly in my opinion that's fine not to make a perfect run. It's more for fun. If you can do a perfect run that would be awesome.
