In this video we documented our "Joyride" at Darjeeling. We boarded the World Famous Darjeeling Toy Train. We booked the Steam Locomotive Vistadome coach. The train started at 3:35 pm from Darjeeling Railway Station. The next station was Batasia Loop, where the train halted for 20 minutes. Then the next station was the "World's Highest Railway Station" Ghum. Finally the train ride ended at the Darjeeling at around 5:30 pm in evening. We had a great time on this joyride. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), famously known as the "Toy Train," is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a historic narrow-gauge railway in the Indian state of West Bengal. It's renowned for its scenic route through the picturesque landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas and its engineering marvels.
The DHR was built between 1879 and 1881 and covers a distance of about 88 kilometers, connecting the town of Siliguri in the plains to Darjeeling, situated at an altitude of 2,200 meters (7,218 feet). The train journey offers breathtaking views of tea gardens, valleys, forests, and mountainous terrain, making it a popular tourist attraction.
The railway employs unique and ingenious engineering techniques, including zigzag reverses, loops, and steep gradients, to navigate the challenging terrain. The small, vintage steam engines and charming, colorful coaches add to its nostalgic appeal.
The DHR's significance lies not only in its transportation function but also in its cultural and historical importance. It represents a significant feat of engineering from the British colonial era and continues to be an iconic symbol of Darjeeling.
Visitors can experience various journeys on the DHR, ranging from short joyrides to longer trips between Siliguri and Darjeeling, immersing themselves in the region's natural beauty and heritage.
