I think John Maher was only 18, when he composed this amazing drum beat , that drives the whole song! From their amazing debut LP 'Another Music in a Different Kitchen'! I've been playing it since I was 12! That's 44 years! dx
Great song! Great band! Love Steve Diggle's playing on this. None of that 1000 notes per second garbage. Just tasteful, melodic playing that gives the song exactly what it needs.
this was recorded in nottingham england at the central tv studios, 14th dec '89...it was the last gig on their first tour in 8 & a half years. you can find it on a video/dvd called "buzzcocks-live legends". drummer john maher left the band after this gig, but returned 2 years later to fill in a number of dates when his replacement mike joyce (ex-the smiths) left.
Can't remember the year, either 80 or 81, or even both, Maher was voted second in the best drummer section of the NME annual poll. First was Cozy Powell......A fantastic and original musician, and a great band then and now...
So f_g great . Steve riding the guitarr. John on the drums beating like he had all the energy in the world and Pete as the master. Rest in peace pete Shelley
bleedin' brilliant - last track from their brilliant album "Another music in a different kitchen" - never seen it live before - excellent drumming throughout.
I LOOOOOVE THE BUZZCOCKS! I hope they come to BULGARIA soon :]]] such a good band - they sound like Offspring and sometimes like The Beatles which is GREAT!!!
1st gig for me too. Dublin September 1978, still have the ticket, it cost £2 and The Sinners supported. Great memories of the gig, I was scared stiff of all the punks! Brilliant though!!!!
@Scrotemeister the drumming on this made me* buy the album when we were listening to it on a trip to HMV Oxford St in 1978. It came in it's own silver carrier bag. *ok, it was my mate Dave that actually bought it. I just taped it later. And here we are, 31 years later, and I just saw them live at the Mouth of the Tyne festival - fantastic
New model who...nah only joking...was listening to vengance only the day and realised how good the song SEX was...fukin belter....almost better than SE......no not quite...
True. If I am antsy or something and want to quickly clear my head, just put on a Buzzcocks song. Raison d'Etre, Harmony in my Head, Why Can't I Touch It, the just goes on and on .......
@kellymonster77 Looks like it was the first revival tour, they all look a tad older and the tempi were a touch slower because I don't think Maher had touched a kit for years before they had reformed.
havent seen this footage before, great track, I remember buying this back then as an aussie import 12" on the wizzard label clear vinyl WOW, when i saw the buzzcocks just 3 weeks ago at the churchill in bromley they played this in their set & still sounds great
this vid brings back some great memories of seeing them live in '89or '90,at the Powerstation.and seeing the orig clip on radio with pictures in the early '80s :) classic
current buzzcocks' drummer danny ferrant does this song a little differently, but it's still fantastic. also, check out "late for the train" on youtube which buzzcocks also play on their current tour as well as this gem.
before the second instrumental break, steve diggle breaks a string on his guitar & has to make up the last part of the rift. during the drum solo, he replaces his guitar.
... & as I ‘moved away from the pulse-beat’ (aka ‘died’) ... I thought/feeled/thinks/felt of/o’Catherine, Alison, Clare/Claire, Mary, Zarina, ... +.too many ‘others’ 2 name in ‘person’. p.s. ... it ain’t o’er ‘til ‘fightladysing’ ...
It's so obvious they have dubbed applause after Diggle's solos. This fake televised gig was such a disappointment to me. Bloody Central Television for you. They should have just filmed one of the actual gigs from this reunion tour. I saw them at the Humingbird in Birmingham and they were ace.
Must have been one of Garvey's last shows no? His tempos were a bit slower after they reformed because they didn't practice all that much before going on the road.
@@jimskea224 pleasure Jim Great beat, saw them live back in the day and learnt the pattern when I was 18 ish lol When trying to explain it on the kit I say as a starter just keep the bass drum going 1, 2, 3 ,4 , ...then play 16ths back and forth between the toms to get the feel and timing and arm movement before breaking up the tom pattern and introducing the snare bits ... John Maher and Clem Burke taught me everything I needed to know about pop/new wave drumming tbh...if I ever want a good drum workout I play this song and Late For The Train off Love Bites .... endurance! All the best! Forgot to say at about 4.38 in the video JM plays 4 bars of the same pattern which are different to the main pattern in the rest of the song ...in those 4 bars you can hear the 16ths being played with a snare at the end of each bar ... those 4 bars are the clue for the guitars to come back in 👍
This drumming looks so simple and sounds so cool but it's a real bastard to play. I love the way he's just cruising along. Great song.
Johnny was, SLF. Try that one out or the CLASH Jules working for the drug squad.
It is amazing!!!
the best drum beat ever
Brilliant drumming always loved this .

You ain't lying-
John Maher is amazingly talented.
Textbook precision.

John Maher is one of the best drummers ever.I liked them since their Spiral Scratch days.Nowadays their music is becoming recognised
Funny but when people talk about punk musicians you never hear Steve Diggle mentioned (or not often) such an under rated guitarist.
Absolutely concur x x
Me too!
Steve is great. Personable, charming, talented. Great ultimate band member. Good singer too? 😍
Definitely!.Brilliant guitarist plus he could sing too.....Seen them in Glasgow in 78.Great night. .
There are numerous reasons for this..!
My favorite Buzzcocks song .
The Drummer, drummer, drummer!!!
One of the best drummers I've ever heard punk , rock or jazz makes no difference this is a classic .
Q: what is cooler than John Maher? A: nothing
he is just fucking rock solid, and looks cool as well
Just a brilliant song with brilliant lyrics and the drumming is just out of this world along with the haunting guitar .
@@kevinadamson7571 Fuk had this album back in the day.. Still the most solid drummer
Which one was John Maher ... the drummer? Or the bassist?
Ice cream...

Just a bit sadder w his death. Makes us love them more because nothing ever like them.
Great close ups on the 330. They can't be used for lead work of course.
bleedin' brilliant - last track from their brilliant album "Another music in a different kitchen" - never seen it live before - excellent drumming throughout.
RIP PETE GO SHOW EM HOW TO POGO IN HEAVEN xxxx

saw them Saturday night, still great
The world's greatest drummer
I love this band so much.. When they play live they always genuinely enjoy themselves.
that '89 comeback tour was incredible...
have this video (live legends)at home....must have played it a thousand times in the past 17 years.......still sounds fantastic!!
@Scrotemeister the drumming on this made me* buy the album when we were listening to it on a trip to HMV Oxford St in 1978. It came in it's own silver carrier bag.

Ferocious. What a band, then and now-
Wonderful memories.
I have this gig on VHS, would love to have a DVD version :)
Love you Pete xx
F* awesome song, R.I.P. Pete!
Great song, I love playing it on drums. All punk energy in 5 minutes.

Sounds clear as water I see on the ground after taking a bath & see the sky, myself reflected on the liquidity.
Just perfect.

"a saucerful of buzzcocks", we used to call this. 😂

Tremendous tune and one of the best bands ever.
Great!
You're great, know it!
Great Band 🙏
BEST EVER!!!
billy idol......sorry couldn't resist
Superb song
Maher and Diggle on this are tight as fuck, spot on....great tune...great groove...
A dance / rave tune before it was ever thought of
JM could've had his pick of drumming jobs, but pursued his love of racing minis instead. good man. excellent drummer, but left us wanting more.
Rasentando la perfezione.
Yes mate!
Relentless…
I take it back, they still have the "edge."
current buzzcocks' drummer danny ferrant does this song a little differently, but it's still fantastic.
also, check out "late for the train" on youtube which buzzcocks also play on their current tour as well as this gem.
Both are monster drum showcases. Buzzcocks go far beyond their punk label.
unfortunatly some of us are approaching 50 faster than others but I agree with your seniment hahaha
hazzlim~
lucky you, if he's as good a teacher as he is a player, you'll be able to play this one in no time at all.
all the best.

Ah yeah. It's a 360 at the end.
cozy powell

Son grosos, sépanlo!!
No, he's in U2
Tune your guitar Diggle - every fucking time....
What year is this from?
1989 (December)
canned applause ?? , have I missed something
Is the rhythm on this just a straight 4/4?
Yes 4/4 timing 16ths pattern with the snare on the off beats in bars 2, 3 n 4
