    I'm writing a fiction novel where a powder explosion happens. Super useful video. Thanks!!

    It would be interesting to see one of those steel drums that's completely sealed except for a small hole in the lid to dispense liquids. That should hold several times more pressure and either contain the fireball completely (and backfire flames down the dust injector) or else break apart the drum *very* violently. Just make sure there's not loose dust nearby, since a bursting barrel would probably throw it into the air and...

    A dust ignition can raise absolute air pressure and temperature by about 10 times, although the exact amount depends on fuel type, quantity, initial temperature, initiation source, confinement, mixing, etc. Lets assume that you get about half that with creamer in that volume, sowe get 60 psi gauge pressure . Let's say the barrel lid is 11.5 inches in radius, to hold the lid on the barrel during the ignition would take over 12 tons of force.

    I work in a granulation department that has powder everywhere in the suites that we use. Nobody seems to care that we work in an explosive environment. I honestly think about this all of the time and plan on contacting OSHA about this issue.

      Yeah, it’s even harder to imagine if someone were to scrape a metal shovel against a bumpy rocky surface(concrete) causing a spark to ignite the whole place

      I would report it. Just an explosion like this without wearing a fireproof jacket and pants can cause 3 degree burns and could likely kill you within 6 months depending on how long you could live. Some die within hours. I couldn't imagine being someone caught in one of these explosions.

    I see multiple problems with this demonstration if we are to be completely safety conscious.
    First off, why is this inside?
    Second they didn’t clean up after the first non explosion. Imagine if that fireball had been a little more powerful or knocked the can over. Bigger boom.
    Third in the one with the loose lid I doubt the guy had enough time to get enough out of the way.

    • @danjl1
      @danjl1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your concern, this was done at a safety lab in Sweden, don't try this at home. They had run a test prior to providing the demostrations.

      It is certainly something you don't want to do at home. That said we were at the RISE in Sweden. The viewing gallery was about 15 meters away behind thick impact resistant glass. Rise personnel had conduct some testing prior to our visit to create a safe environment.
