  • "The Captive in the Caucasus," written by Leo Tolstoy in 1872, is a novella that tells the story of Russian soldiers captured by Caucasian tribesmen. The main characters, Zhilin and Kostylin, are taken hostage in the Caucasus Mountains, with the tribe demanding a ransom for their release. Zhilin, the more resourceful of the two, attempts to adapt to his surroundings and plots their escape, while Kostylin is less adaptable and more despairing. Their first escape attempt fails, leading to a more stringent confinement, but their second attempt is successful, showcasing Zhilin's ingenuity and resilience. The novella, based on Tolstoy's own experiences in the Russian military, explores themes of human dignity, cultural conflict, and the nature of freedom.

Great story! Not familiar with this piece by Tolstoy, but it was well worth listening to.

Is this and other stories in this series narrated by AI? The expression (such as it is) is pretty so-so, and the stresses are much too often in the wrong place. Pronunciation is - shall we say - eccentric; as examples, the word "moreover" pronounced "mow-ree-over", and "plain" pronounced "pee-lain". The Russian, "korosho" should be pronounced "ka-rash-oh" (meaning, among other things "OK") with the stress on the last syllable, and "Ivan" is "Ee-van" stress on last syllable. Shame. Good stories mangled. Lousy use for AI (if there is ever a good use for it ...)

I was wondering that too. This channel cranks out new narrations way too often not to, I suspect.

      Yeah, 99% sure its AI.

Well think about it, if I had an AI narrator, and classic stories for which I paid no royalties I too could sell advertising for them. These stories are a treat, and for that I thank you!

Personally I appreciate exposure to literature like this. If you don’t want AI read it yourself.

@@mikewalker8956 I have, and do read Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and the like. But it's quite nice to have something read to me while I work in my studio. But I don't appreciate bad English or other pronunciation and expression. Just my opinion. You obviously have a different opinion, to which, of course, you are entitled.

Is this AI-read? I like the stories, I don't think much of the reading, sometimes mispronouncing words, sometimes with weird parsing of sentences.

@@wolfthequarrelsome504 You are right, but there are mispronunciations - occasionally - and they catch my attention and interrupt the flow of the narrative for me.

@@wolfthequarrelsome504 Well I have listened to a half-dozen of these short stories and this is AI. This voice cannot distinguish between words like ``bow tie,'' ``hunting bow'' and ``take a bow.'' It pronounces all ``bows'' as in, ``take two bows.'' Confidently flowing on in the exact same cadence, never catching itself in such simple mistakes.
