The simplest explanation for Jackson's actions, at least in my mind, is just the adrenaline rush of the moment. He was so amped up and ready to do his job he forgot to wait for his grenade to go off before he went in.

Jackson was hyped on adrenalin and rushed in to soon. The comment about it being weird talking to someone then seeing them a minute later dead. I met a War correspondent that had come ashore on D Day. He took a relatively set of photos. One that always gave me chills. A 50 cal gun team on a balcony overlooking a street. He was having coffee with them then stepped out to take a leek. The Germans made a push to retake the town and he was pinned without his camera. Twenty minutes later he was able to return to the second story room where the gun team was. Both men where dead from a grenade so one picture shows the two men manning the MG pointing it down the street then the next was them lying dead.

Carwood Lipton was a First Sergeant, a very high non-commissioned officer rank, and was promoted to Second Lieutenant, the lowest of the commissioned officer ranks in the Army, but still outranking all non-commissioned officers. Lt. Jones was already a Second Lieutenant and was promoted to First Lieutenant, the next higher rank. David Webster was hit in the episode Crossroads. He was gone so long that they kind of treated him as a replacement, even though he started out with them in Toccoa. In order to become an officer, Lipton had to be discharged as an enlisted man. He got his honorable discharge and then got his commission as an officer.

Lipton had to be honorably discharged S an enlisted soldier, then commissioned as an officer, lieutenant 2nd grade. In reality, I heard, he was in limbo for a day, no longer enlisted, but not yet commissioned. Had something happened to him, his legal status as a combatant would have been fuzzy.......

Webster was wounded back in Episode 5. His wounds were much more serious than depicted, so he had to be sent to a hospital in England rather than be taken to a field hospital in France. This is what made it impossible for him to go AWOL and rejoin Easy. Webster made it a practice to never volunteer for anything, and to refuse all promotions. But if directly given a task, he completed it.
Also, Webster's friends were glad to see him, and his return was better welcomed than portrayed in this episode. He was especially welcomed back by Joe Liebgott and George Luz, both of whom were close friends with Webster.
As for Jones, he was actually with Easy for close to four months before being moved up to Regimental Headquarters. He was moved up because, as a West Point graduate, he'd be staying with the army after the war was over.

Jackson had shrapnel go into his brain from the grenade.
If you look in the background when Winters is receiving his new rank at the end of the episode you can see Cobb being loaded into a van with MP’s. He was dishonorable discharged for assaulting Lt Foley while drunk.

There's a lot of conflicting information about Jackson. Some say he jumped into Normandy on D-day. Others say he was a replacement who came in before Market Garden. It's possible he was wounded on D-day then came back before Market Garden. He wasn't a fresh replacement for this episode. He was actually in the Battle of the Bulge, and when Toye and Guarnere were wounded, a jeep carrying ammo drove by. The jeep driver wanted to deliver the ammo and didn't want to take Toya and Guarnere to safety, but Jackson threatened the jeep driver with his gun and the jeep driver quickly changed his mind. There are also conflicting stories about the grenade that killed Jackson. Some say that it was his own grenade and he rushed in due to adrenaline or whatever. Others say it was a German grenade that took him out. There is also conflicting information about whether or not he lied about his age when he joined and what is actual age was.

Lieutenant Jones was commissioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation from West Point on 6 June 1944. The timeline at this point is about March of 1945, about 9 months later. Time-in-grade and a demand for promotable officer probably got him on the schedule for promotion. Lipton, on the other hand, enlisted as a private but demonstrated leadership qualities that put him on a trajectory to eventually become supervising NCO for the Company. His Battalion or Regimental Commander recognized his qualities and Lipton, already the top NCO rank, was obliged to accept a battlefield commission.

  • @herrzimm
    @herrzimm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Just to inform everyone: 1st LT and 2nd LT are different ranks, with 2nd being the lower ranked LT. 1st LT's are promoted to Captains. Which is why they are often put in charge of the entire company, like LT. Spiers. Who gets promoted to Captain after taking over Easy.
2nd LT's are often in charge of "units" (or platoon/squads), normally between 3-4 depending on the make up of the company in general (Most times it is 3, but special units with equipment can be a 4th for just the equipment itself).
Generally speaking, 2nd Lt's are "flexible" in how they are assigned in the chain of command, due to being such a low ranking officer. They are either put in charge of a single squad (5-10 men), possibly a full platoon (10+). When there aren't enough LT's around, it is up to Sarges to take on the leadership or squads or platoons. 2nd LT's are considered one step up from a Sarge, but are often TREATED like Sarges by Captain or above. Someone who is more responsible than a private/sarge, but also not experienced enough as an officer to really put into a major position of authority.
Also, Jones was a West Point graduate, Lipton was promoted by a field-commission. At this time, West Point officers were considered "trained to lead" (therefore treated as official officers, no matter how fresh out of West Point they were). Field-commission officers were viewed as "lucky" to be promoted to an officer position, often due to battle-field deaths and desperation, or because you "knew someone" and they promoted you in hopes of getting you OFF the battle-field. At the time of Lipton's field-promotion, it would be viewed as being "lucky" his commanding officer was wounded, or he wouldn't even be considered for promotion at all.

There is a line drawn between enlisted personnel and commissioned officers, and very few people cross that line. Lipton, as First Sergeant, was very high in the enlisted ranks. His promotion to Second Lieutenant required that he be discharged as an enlisted man and then receive a commission as an officer. You need to be a Second Lieutenant before you can get promoted to First Lieutenant.
Jones graduated from West Point as a Second Lieutenant. It comes with his college degree. The next rank higher is First Lieutenant.
Winters was moved up from Easy Company CO (a Captain's job) to Executive Officer of Second Battalion in Episode 5. By Episode 8, he was head of Second Battalion. Battalion commanders are usually majors, so his promotion was overdue.

    • @4325air
      @4325air 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually, infantry battalion commanders are--by the table of organization--lieutenant colonels. The battalion executive officer (second-in-command) is a major. Company commanders are captains. Company executive officers are 1LTs. Now, due to battlefield casualties, you may even have captains commanding battalions, at least until a new lieutenant colonel or major can get down to the battalion. I found myself in a similar situation in Germany in the 1970s. Our battalion commander was injured and removed, and the regimental commander sent his executive officer (a lieutenant colonel) down to our battalion as an interim commander for a month or so.

Jones got promoted to First Lieutenant because because he had time in grade. When he arrived, he was already a Second Lieutenant. Not because of anything he did on the patrol. His promotion was probably sent along before it even happened, it just finally caught up with him. Winters was finally given the promotion he well deserved. He was already doing a Majors work as Battalion XO (Executive Officer), he finally got the rank to go with it. The honorable discharge for Lipton was because he received the battlefield Commission. Enlisted men are just that, enlisted. Officers receive a 'commission'. In order for Lipton to receive his 'commission', he first had to be discharged as an 'enlisted' man. It's administrative and it's just how it works, i.e. you are hereby discharged as an enlisted man and commissioned as a 2nd Lt. Warrant Officers, receive a 'warrant', they are not 'commissioned'. We didn't see any Warrant officers in this show. Well, the guy that got shot in the head during the assault of the guns when he was asking where the CP was, he was a Warrant Officer, but we didn't get to know anything about him.
US Army Commissioned Officer ranks from lowest to highest are:
    Second Lieutenant
    First Lieutenant
    Captain
    Major
    Lieutenant Colonel
    Colonel
    Brigadier General (one star)
    Major General (two stars)
    Lieutenant General (three stars)
    General (four stars)
General of the Army (five stars)
Webster was not a newbie, neither was Jackson. Didn't you hear the monolog by Webster saying Jackson was 20 years old when he died, he had lied about his age when he enlisted at 16. He'd been in the Army for four years.
Here is a West Point memorial to Lieutenant Henry Jones, the butter bar played by Colin Hanks in HBO’s Band of Brothers. The poor guy died in a vehicle accident before he could get home!
“Being the son of Henry S. Jones, who was one of the original members of the Lafayette Escadrille, Hank had the spirit and desire for adventure born within him. During his childhood in Erie, PA and Dunkirk, NY, these characteristics were first manifested by an attempt to join the French Foreign Legion. Prevented from this by his family, he chose a less spectacular approach to the military career and entered West Point….. After graduation, he went to the Infantry School at Ft. Benning. There he joined the heated discussions about the parachute troops, and feeling that this type of duty might satisfy his desires, he transferred to the Parachute School. There, with 31 of his classmates, he received an intensified and shortened course in the belief that he would be sent overseas immediately upon completion of the training. However, when he received his jump wings, he was sent, with the rest of his classmates, to the 13th Airborne Division at Camp McCall, NC. There he was assigned to a Glider Infantry Regiment and soon was sporting Glider Wings in addition to his jump wings. Finally in December ‘44, the 13th Airborne Division had too many company grade officers, and so Hank and 15 of his classmate-parachutists were sent overseas as replacements to the XVIIIth Airborne Corps in Germany. Hank was assigned to the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division as a platoon leader. He acquitted himself well in combat, earning 3 bronze service stars. He was wounded while leading a patrol but completed his mission successfully and was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart…. The termination of hostilities found Hank with the 506th on the outskirts of Bertchesgaden racing for the Eagle’s Nest. During the subsequent months of shakeup and demobilization…Hank received a transfer to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (Sep) in Frankfurt am Main in Germany….. After a year in the 508th….he was transferred to the 970th C.I.C. Detachment in August of '46. He was assigned to the Berlin Region, where he was subsequently made a field office commander…. When Hank was injured in a jeep wreck in Heidelberg……Hank recovered from the jeep wreck, except for a minor difficulty which necessitated an operation. So, when he regained his health, he entered the 279th General Hospital in Berlin to undergo the operation before his expected return to the States. The operation was unsuccessful and Hank died in the hospital in the evening of July 21, 1947.”

2LT Jones had a real ethical conundrum on his hands, something most people are not aware of. He was a West Point graduate, and the Academy had an exceedingly strict Honor Code. "I will not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do." Think about that for awhile The smallest infraction, something not even noted at a civilian college, could lead to dismissal. The Code literally becomes a way of life. I lived the same code at my military college; it was black and white. Suddenly, on leaving the monastic womb of my college after four years and becoming an infantry officer, I realized that the "real world" has more gray than black and white. Sometimes it is damned if you do and damned if you don't. Sometimes it means selecting a bad course of action that is better than the worst--less damaging to the unit, the men, or your career. Sometimes it means "covering" for well-meaning subordinate officer or trooper who just happened to be at the wrong place and time when "it" hit the fan. Winters had been seasoned in brutal combat and realized that concept. Jones was still inexperienced and was conflicted as to what "filter" he should use to judge Winters' decision about the patrol: The West Point "filter" or the here-and-now combat "filter." One grows up fast in infantry combat.

I know that several excellent and clear comments on rank have already been uploaded, but I thought a few definitions might help make things a bit clearer as to enlisted vs commissioned.
Enlisted soldier: To be “enlisted” in the military, means that an individual has successfully gone through the process of becoming a service member and has taken an oath of U.S. military service. Also, if one signed up - you could request what branch of service to be placed. If drafted, generally you were put in what service needed the most men at that time.
A non-commissioned officer (NCO) is a military officer who usually earned their position of authority by promotion through the enlisted ranks (e.g. a sergeant, technical sergeant).
All commissioned officers (CO) outranked non-commissioned officers. The most significant difference between commissioned (e.g. 2nd Lieutenants and above), and non-commissioned officers is their level of authority over other service members. COs are often college educated and/or have a specialty (e.g. Doctors, military school graduates, etc.).

The rank structure in the military is broken down between Enlisted and Officer ranks. So if you enlist, you usually come in as an E-1 which in the Army is called a Private. If you commission as an officer, you come in as an O-1 which in the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force is called 2nd Lieutenant. An O-2 is called First Lieutenant, 0-3 is Captain, and O-4 is Major. So Jones was promoted from O-1 to O-2, which is why he became First Lieutenant. Sgt Lipton was formerly an enlisted rank, but received a “battlefield commission” and became an O-1, which is 2nd Lieutenant. So the “first” and “second” designation doesn’t have to do with what platoon they were in or anything like that, it’s just about who outranks whom. Officers of any rank always outrank enlisted members of any rank, but Lipton becoming a 2nd Lieutenant now meant that he could be the one who called the shots for his men in battle rather than leave it up to people like Lt Dike.

So, when an enlisted man becomes an officer, he first is discharged as an inlisted. Then he recieves his commision as an officer. its procedure. Similarly, when an enlisted man reinlists, he is discharged from his contract, and signs a new one.

Alright, so… 20 year Army veteran here who spent his first two years in the 101st including invading Afghanistan with them.
1.) Jackson, who was a veteran, did a dumbass thing. Why? We’ll never know. I’ve seen experienced dudes in combat do things that were inexplicably dumb. If they survived and I asked them afterwards, sometimes they’d have an answer on why they did it, and sometimes they would have no idea, as stress makes people do strange things. In Jackson’s case I’m sure his platoon mates always wondered why, but we’ll never know why he did it.
2.) Carwood Lipton was an enlisted man, meaning he enlisted as a private and climbed through the ranks to become the First Sergeant, a “Non-commissioned Officer.” However, before he could receive an officer’s *commission,* he had to be discharged as an enlisted man since he was leaving the enlisted ranks and entering the ranks of commissioned officers. That’s what you heard. It wasn’t a joke, he was literally discharged from the Army as an enlisted man/non-commissioned officer and then subsequently granted a commission as an officer in the US Army. You can’t be both at the same time, legally speaking.
When enlisted men become officers today this still occurs. You are discharged from the armed forces as an enlisted servicemember prior to receiving your commission.
3.) In the show Colin Hanks character is shown sympathetically, but in the book the main take from the Easy Company men was ridiculous how an officer could show up, spend only a short time in the unit, go on one patrol, and immediately be promoted up the ranks and leave tactical combat behind.

Usually, a battalion commander is a lt. colonel and its XO a major. In episode 5 Winters was made battalion XO and retained the rank of captain. After moving into Haguenau Winters was elevated to major and took over command of the battalion.

Yeah the new LT. Jones is Tom Hanks son in real life. Lipton was a Sargeant….any rank of Sargeant is called an NCO….which stands for “non commissioned officer”….you are an enlisted soldier….Officers of 2nd. Lt. And on up are “commissioned officers”…..now….as an enlisted soldier you can get what’s called a “battlefield commission” from enlisted to an officer which is what happened to Lipton.

Cobb is presented as a jerk, because the guys in Easy felt that he was a jerk and conveyed this to Ambrose who wrote the book that the series is based off of.
As for Webster? This is one of those situations where Hollywood took over and reality was left behind. Basically, Webster was wounded far more serious than shown in episode 5. He needed to be evac'ed to England for an extended hospital stay and some slight physical training to get full use of his leg back to the standard before his injuries. Also, NOBODY in Easy felt concern about having Webster on an assignment, because they knew he could do the job and would be one of the people who would often double check equipment and communications with others on the assignment. (Known to be the type to look out for other people and make sure everyone knew what was going on)
Webster was just SMARTER than most of the other soldiers and knew that they don't ask you to volunteer UNLESS it is a highly dangerous situation. So, he didn't volunteer to do anything "extra" without knowing exactly what it meant to do. Extra work, guard duty, shifts working in the kitchen... fine. Doing patrols, scouting or assaulting a location.. no thanks. He would do it when ORDERED, but he wouldn't volunteer for it. Which is why when he DID do it in this episode it was because he felt the need to keep an eye on the LT to make sure he wouldn't screw up, or something happen to him.
Also, LT Jones spent several months with Easy, mostly working on Winter's staff. He was a West Point grad, and expressed plans to remain in Europe after the war to help with the rebuilding efforts. So they did promote him, but mostly to get him up to speed on plans, who to work with, and how to organize large scale projects more than unit-level.
Plus, Winters wanted Jones promoted in order to keep Lipton around longer. He was already getting pressured to transfer Lipton out due to regulations. But by promoting Jones, it left an "opening" in Easy's chain of command that Winters could keep Lipton in position longer... since low level LT's were considered "low priority" for promotions, making it harder to find someone to take Lipton's place. (At this time in the war)

The worst part of this episode is when Jackson eats his own grenade by accident - he arms it, throws it through the window, and charges into the building before it’s done cooking. By the time he makes it through, he is the one that takes a face full of explosives and shrapnel.
I think Jackson was a little too eager to get into the fight - so eager he didn’t pay attention to his own grenade.

You may not be interested in reviewing more history themed videos, but you have done this series and are talking about "The Pacific," so I'll mention a channel called "Oversimplified." They make funny cartoon videos that teach history better than the schools do. Schools have actually asked them if the could make versions with the racy jokes removed. If you watched one of their videos, you'd never be sorry.

21:13 MAJ Winters knew what was up. The war was winding down. The Allies had won and it was just a matter of time and distance.
Going in another patrol would be a vanity project when everyone knew this was *not* a time for heroics, or stud maneuvers.
Clean up what you had to, get home alive. To some it might seem like cowardice.
To everyone else it would have said “I’ve gone too far and lived through too much to die for some bullshit mission when we’re already winning”
Winters knows this which is why he gave the directives he did for the second “patrol” that never actually happened.

  • @Berks94

Jackson's story is told a little incorrectly. So Jackson was there from the beginning, he was no rookie by this point. He is the reason Joe Toye and Guarnere got out of Bastogne, so Jackson is no novice. In this particular patrol, he was going into the building and a German dropped a grenade from an upper floor that landed on his head. It was definitely not incompetence. Also I love the points made above about Cobb, Cobb was definitely not a jerk just because.

  • @docbearmb
    @docbearmb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Do the math! Jackson joined at 16 and died at 20. He’d been in the army for about 4 years. He wasn’t green.
As to ranks: when Jones graduated West Point, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant. So the next step up was to 1st Lieutenant. It had nothing to do with which platoon he was in.
Lipton had been an enlisted man; in his case a Master Sergeant. Upon being promoted to an officer ( 2nd Lt., the lowest officer rank), he was discharged ( as enlisted) and received his commission. It’s like getting fired and rehired at a bigger job.
You seemed confused on Winters. He had been a Captain. His promotion was to Major. In the army, Captain was still somewhat low on the totem pole.

Doesn't sound like Jackson was new, they said he joined up 4 years earlier I think based on his age. Just too much tension before going in, and too much adrenaline once they were moving; even experienced people make dumb moves sometimes.
