- I have just returned from a fantastic 2,300 km rainy season historical and natural wonders roadtrip through Isaan in Thailand. On the first day, I drove over four hours East of Bangkok to Nang Rong and picked my mate up for an afternoon of wonder. PHANOM RUNG HISTORICAL PARK was constructed over 1,000 years ago as a Khmer Empire Hindu (Shiva) temple complex in Buriram Province, Isaan, Thailand, later becoming Buddhist (and perhaps before too - more of that later), and it is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring. I challenge anybody not to make a Marc Wiens face when they first see it... wonderful place! Any theories I have or nonsense I chat is not always necessarily factual... it's all for entertainment purposes.

Impressive to have built that structure over 1000 years ago. It would be great to see a movie made about this place back in its glory days.
I think there have been some dodgy old Thai movies set here. I would love to see a 'historical' romp here and the many other places like this. Even after so long here, this rooadtrip opened my eyes even further
@@JBWanders73 Sounds like the road trip was good for you and Steve 🙏. 2000km , trip was that one way ?
The round trip was about 2,150 km mate, but the roads are pretty quiet to the East fortunately.... we missed the flash floods by about 48 hours.... gulp 🙏
@@JBWanders73 🙏
Great video, Jim. Nice holiday haircut.
First 'haircut' in 20 years. The barber's clippers gave me spots... I will continue to do it myself with rusty shears, hairspray and a lighter. Thanks for joining me mate!!
@@JBWanders73 really enjoyed it. Hopefully next time it will be sunny
Love these ancient Greek temples
Care to elaborate?
Are you drunk? 😂😂

Love it Jimbo ! Another glimpse into Thailand & it’s fascinating history ,keep em coming my friend x
Glad you enjoyed it mate x
Such a fascinating and interesting place with so much history...thanks for sharing and taking us along...looking forward to the rest of your road trip videos🙏👍😊
Thanks a lot Tommy, glad you enjoyed it. There'll be quite a few vids from this road trip mate 🙏✌
nice video mate. Looks proper Khmer. If I remember rightly the holes in the rocks are so rods can be inserted to help manoeuvre them into place
Thanks mate. Yeah, I came to the same conclusion with the roads.... but how did they make the holes I wonder?
Nice one Jimmy. It was 41C there last month and we fried, didn’t have the energy afterwards to visit the second location unfortunately
Cheers Karl. We were lucky it was a rainy day - it was muggy but not too hot mate
Love it , top craic .
Thans a lot Paul
@@JBWanders73 Reminds me of Phimai - east of Khorat - a charming backwater which aligns to angkor wat , apparently .
@@paulseoighemcgee5772 I went there on this trip mate... fantastic place... there'll be a fair few vids beforehand though. They say there was a straight Phimai - Angkor highway. Some may say that Phimai was there first and the road was built toward Angkor
@@JBWanders73 Aye sir , couldn't tell ya - the academic view in my amateur history view says the Khmer were the first , the Tai migrated from the north circa 1100's - became the Lao ( which must be a nut brown blend of the oldest aborginal farmers there before the Tai , came , saw and coexisted - the Tamil originated tech' of the Khmer temples predate the gorgeous , multi- roofed Tai ingenuity that is most , if not all , of the Theravada temples - though many incorporate the Khmer style , which can only be respectful - since it's the place where the dharma is explored and lived . Gotta love 'em , the old kon tai , jing jing , kaapom . 55
I may change a small part of that viewpoint in future videos.... History = his story. Prior to the Khmer were the Mon - the Dvarawadi, and others. Dvarawadi culture dominated what is now Central Thailand from 6th-11th centuries - I would argue they are the original Thais. There is a school of thought here now about 'origin stories' (see Si Thep). Some say that the Mon-Khmer (there is evidence that they worked together) pushed the Tai back to Southern China 4,000 years ago and then they began to trickle back. There's been a lot uncovered in the last decade or so, particularly pre-khmer Dvarawadi (and other kingdoms which I will mention), making some of the story a wee bit murky. I even went and looked at rock art etc on this trip... I've got a couple of theories, which may turn out to be bollox haha
This was amazing, JB. I am really looking forward to seeing the rest of the trip. I will definitely put this on the to-do list, but I will need to do some research in the meantime. As a side note, my eldest is hoping to go to Angkor Wat next year.
Thanks a lot Shaun! Angkor Wat is stunning - I'm sure they will love it mate 🙏
This is great. Built around the same time as Ankhor?
Thanks Gareth - it was built before Angkor Wat, as many of the complexes here in Thailand were. A lot were started in the late 10th century and 'renovated' up until the 13th century. They say that Angkor was built in the 12th century.
A well-preserved Khmer temple in Thailand. Many Khmer Surin settled in the surrounding areas.
Yeah, it's wonderfu. I went to a Khmer wedding once in the countryside not far from here about 25 years ago. Great memories
Wow, really amazing JB Jim, 😍ancient temples atop a volcano ? Didn`t know that exists in TH 👍when i see such historical monuments i think our civilisation will left nothing else then rubbish lol !😁🤔😎
Thanks Cindy - there's loads more fascinating stuff out there to come.... We'll probably leave behind rusted metal and tower block 'statues' 😂✌✌
❤❤❤❤👍
Thanks very much 🙏
The pawns were markers for a process of saying prayers and focusing of the mind. Being present with prayer. Mate good viewing from my armchair. Have you been to the ones in Cam and Nam -?
Great info, thanks. I've never been to Nam but I plan on going back to Cambodia when I can. I have a great route planned, taking in places like Koh Ker.
Glad you didn't say they were glory holes.
😂🙏😂
