I still drive by the old abandon Roadside America. Next to it is the Blue Mountain Restaurant. Many people there can tell you stories about Roadside America. Wish I would have attended the auction when everything was sold to the highest bidder.

One of my happiest childhood memories is visiting a model village at a seaside resort here in England. I was mesmerized and totally in awe of the buildings and live action attractions - a horse race, a zoo and a swimming pool with moving figures. The main event was a wedding with a procession out of the church with bells ringing and a crowd of model people cheering. Magical. At twilight all the lights came on and the mini pubs opened. When I think of it now (65 years later) I still get chills of delight.

Roadside America is just another tourist attraction/tradition that has fallen victim to these awkward times we live in today. I used to love going there to see all the miniature buildings, trains, animated displays... all created to entertain the wondrous curiosity of children and adults alike! Lawrence Gerringer designed and built the entire indoor fantasy world with the help of family and close friends, and there will never be another quite like it... I sure will miss the intricate beauty and unique sights of this wonderful place! Thank You, Mr. Gerringer, for all the years of true enchantment and your talented craftsmanship! You were one of Pennsylvania's greatest!!!!

Still have my old booklet and brochure from the mid 60s I picked up back then. Love how they run their trains really fast there. Wish you had shown a close up of their circus. If you get down near the Gettysburg are you should visit Mister Ed's Elephant Museum another COOL Location.

In the early 1950s, my first grade end-of-year field trip was to "Roadside America" and, then, Dorney Park. I was enthralled with the story behind the display as well as the depiction of one of the last Indian raids in the area and the chapel on the grounds. Heady stuff for a then-first grader.

Mr. Gieringer started all this in his Reading PA rowhouse basement. Later he would temporarily set it up for the public in the Crystal Ballroom at Carsonia Park, both gone in the 60's and 50's respectively. Then it was on to Shartlesville on old Rte 22, a mostly two-lane highway. Attendance plummeted when parallel I-78 was built.
I grew up in Reading and am now 74, but my brother went to the auction where the buildings were sold piecemeal. He got the picnic tents to the left of the circus. I always admired the Esso gas station.
I brought my son there years ago but he doesn't remember. This video might refresh his memory.
And yes, it saddens me to see it go.

Not sure many know but last year they raised funds to replace their roof. Sadly, the owners kids don't want to take over the business and it's been for sale the past few months. Several newspaper articles can be found online about this place. Been going there since I was younger and there have been talks of selling it, moving the display to another location or it being gone entirely as the location is prime realty. Thanks for the video Adam!

Brings back childhood memories, as i grew up about 35 miles from there and went several times and I think took my son there when he was little. It's not the biggest or most realistic, but it has many of the old post war models and tinplate accessories that are very Americana. The kind of old train stuff my pappy had.

When I lived in Pennsylvania, Roadside America was an annual trek to see. There's also another miniature train city not far in Paradise, PA called the Choo-Choo Barn. My son and I loved both places. While out in Pennsylvania Dutch country, you should eat at one of the PA. Dutch owned restaurants for very tasty food. You should also try some PA. Scrapple instead of bacon or sausage.
