Cantaloupe Harvest - Are They Ripe?

  • It's time to harvest my cantaloupes... Are they ripe? Check out the video to see how my cantaloupe harvest went.
So - With the whitefly problem and the heat and the rabbits, I needed to pull off one of my cantaloupes. After harvesting the first one, I decided to go ahead and harvest the 2nd one as well - since it was 2 weeks older.
I gave them the slip test and the smell and feel test - they passed all three so I was ready to cut them open and take a look!

After posting the growing Cantaloupe and Watermelon video back in late January, it seems that many viewers are interested in their progress.
In this video, I'll catch you up on the cantaloupes (as well as a surprise from one of them!) and sometime in the next episode or two maybe I'll have some watermelon to show off as well!
The cantaloupe seeds were pulled from a cantaloupe I purchased at Sprouts so we'll see how they grow and how they taste!
    Thanks for watching!

I plan on continuing this series until the Watermelon Harvest and as long as the other cantaloupe vines are still alive - perhaps a late season harvest once the whiteflies and the heat dies down? Thanks for joining me on their journey!

Hi Rob: Here are few of my tips on growing cantaloupes. I am in Toronto, ON, area. Pretty north from you, but the key is the heat. I know you have very hot temperature as well, but from your videos your patch seems to be covered with shades. I am surprised you can get some fruits to set. I grow my patch against a red brick wall facing south with no tree shades. All open. I also use seeds from grocery bought cantaloupes. I also wrap them with grocery nettings. So Tip 1 is if you can get more direct sun onto your patch the better. Tip 2: whenever you are checking on them visually, also check them by smell. Animals do that, they know which ones are ripe. I don't rely on the slip method. When the fragrance is quite pronounced, yet the stem is not ready to slip yet, and the summer days are almost over, I just cut the stem, and keep the fruit in the garage to finish ripening. On good years, I can harvest 20 some cantaloupes, with some 12-15 really sweet and edible ones. Last year cucumber beetles found my patch. Even with the devastation, I harvested 6-7. Tip 3:

Hey! Im from the Toronto area too. Im trying for the first time to grow melons, right now they are little sprouts and inside, obviously. But I was wondering how to grow them in toronto climate, because we don't get a long growing season. Thank you!

Looks great! I'm pretty jealous. I planted mine from seed at the end of May and still don't have any female flowers. Healthy vines and tons of males, but they're all very lonely. This is my first garden so I'm not sure what to do or if I'll get anything out of it this year. It was nice seeing that it's not impossible. Thanks for the series!

Are you certain you need to remove and dry the seeds from the pulp? I grew tomatoes from overripe scraps slices-goowey pulp and all-and they produced great strong plants (6-14in tall so far after transplanting deep in garden bed.). Seems like some fruit benefit from the nutrients in the pulp (while also being able to flourish if eaten by a rabbit and left out to dry and germinate from rabbit compost). We tossed (composted) some cantaloupe seeds pulp and all. (Found your video to confirm what type of seedlings they are.) The 2-5inch seedlings look great/strong; now, I'll try to transplant them without harming their tender fragile roots; hope to at least salvage 2-10 plants from the 50 seedlings. Ever use golden compost tea (urine: rich in Nitrogen N/7, Potassium K/19 Phosphorus P/15) in your garden?

Thanks for the videos. Very informative. And your crop looked yummy. question: did the plants that did the best like the full sun and how much did you water them? And did you use fertilizer?

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Amber Kabacinski partial sun to full sun. On the hot days the leaves drooped a bit but perked up at night and on less hot days did well. I fertilized after the flowers started to drop.

Sorry I must have hit something... Tip 3: I hand pollinate with a brush in the beginning to start the process early. Tip 4: I think if you covered your soil with some plastic sheeting it might reduce the insect infestation considerably.

I'm setting myself up for disappointment by watching your cantaloupe harvest video! I've got 4 cantaloupes the size of tennis balls right now and I'm already watching you dig into your super juicy ones. I'm going to be so sad if mine turns out bland and sad LOL.

I had a plant grow up in the middle of my lettuce ---I thought it was a pumpkin.
But now I can see I have several cantaloupes growing, a couple getting towards normal harvest size! I'm excited!
Good to see I need to wait some more before harvest.
I'll plan to save some seeds and try again next year.
    Thanks for the informative video.
