Britain's Prince Charles on Friday said he and his sons would always feel the 'enormous loss' of Princess Diana.
Speaking publicly for the first time about Diana's death in a car crash on August 31th, Charles praised the courage of Prince William and Prince Harry.
He added that the warmth of people's support had been 'remarkable' and in many ways 'overwhelming.'
Almost three weeks after the death of his ex-wife in a Paris car crash, Prince Charles on Friday spoke in public for the first time.
A large crowd gathered to welcome him in Manchester in the north of England.
Many of these wellwishers were still grieving for the loss of Diana.
The Prince, appearing notably relaxed with the crowd, shook hands, took flowers and gifts and accepted condolences on behalf of the two young princes.
Prince Charles thanked people for their support and praised his sons William and Harry.

"The public response to Diana's death has been equally quite remarkable and indeed in many ways overwhelming. And I think many of you will know from the experience of family loss in your own lives, it is inevitably very difficult to cope with grief at any time, but perhaps you might realise that it is even harder when the whole world is watching at the same time. But obviously the public support and the warmth of that support has helped enormously. I can't tell you how enormously grateful and touched both of the boys and myself are. Also I am unbelievably proud of William and Harry, they have been quite remarkable and I think they have handled an extraordinarily difficult time as I am sure all of you can imagine with quite enormous courage and the greatest possible dignity. They are coping extraordinarily well, but obviously Diana's loss and death has been an enormous loss as far as they are concerned, and they will always feel that loss."

The Prince, who was at a Salvation Army centre for a community effort to regenerate run-down housing projects, made the personal comments before giving a prepared speech.
For those gathered to greet him it was an opportunity to express their sadness at Diana's untimely death and also a chance to glimpse the man who is most likely to be the next king.

He hardly showed any emotion during his mother's funeral and the days leading up to it either, only during the anthem. Same with his father's funeral. Doesn't mean he didn't love them as well. Not everyone grieves in the same way

@@bodomfucked He's been trained to be stoic to loss. When he went to pick up the body in Paris, He had bags under his eyes from crying, but he looked like he was trying to hold it together. Which to be honest I think it was the same today. He looked nervous, but he also thanked the public for their condolences to him as well. The "as far as they are concerned" was not a slight, but it was a my sons lost their mother. That is a void no one can fill in their life.

You know nothing. The British royal family are basically ceremonial. They give more than they take and bring a lot of revenue via tourism. We have prime ministers and parliament who do the actual governing. Transitioning to a republic would be too complicated and detrimental, particularly in the UK when we have the mess of Brexit and COVID.

It's interesting because I've studied behavior for a few years now. Particularly in Criminals but those flags can still be seen in "normal" behavior as well. He's continually fiddling with his hands. Holding them together, down to the desk, then up again. Fiddling with the pocket square - fingertip to fingertip. Eye contact, down up down up down up. But never long enough to really make a connection with someone or to show too much of what's going on in his mind.
You can't make any definite conclusions about what his behavior means except this - he's extremely nervous and very aware of how many people are watching his reactions. He's trying to control how much he shows as much as possible. Again - the only real conclusion that can be drawl even so many years later -- He can't handle his nerves or his emotions very well and they exhibit physically. Do with that what you will - but thank you Prince Charles for teaching a CJ student what that kind of nervous looks like. It's fairly entertaining.

I was astonished when Charles took it upon himself to demand the use of the Royal Flight to go to Paris with her sisters and to see her body and bring her back with the Royal Standard on her coffin. Remember that she had been divorced for a year and he had NO obligation to do this yet he did it instantly, not as a reaction to public opinion as it was literally hours after her death. The Queen wasn't keen until someone said " ma'am would you prefer that she returns in a Harrods van?".

I think that statement that more or so was looking at his sons. It doesn't mean he was not broken by her death, but he was thinking about the enormous loss his sons experienced because the loss of a mother is a void no one can fill. Also, people keep forgetting that the RF is trained to be incredibly stoic, no show of emotion. Stoic seems Cold but it's not. It just means keeping all emotions inside. My cousin was incredibly stoic after his father died. It didn't mean he was broken but it was his way of coping.

Thank you. Also they missed a key part of the speech which was after saying "Diana's death was an enormous loss as far as they are concerned", he said "And I and They will always feel that loss". Turn on captions and you will see it. The way he softly said "and I" spoke volumes to me, especially when he caught himself and said "and they". For one he caught himself unless he does not speak English, and considering that the speech was written for him by a press secretary, I take it as back tracking to "And they". He was clearly working to keep the speech solely on the boys. The moment he said "and I" he was thinking about his own grief.

Exactly. They missed a couple things in the speech, A. It was obvious he was uncomfortable. You don't fidget that much unless you are feeling extremely anxious. B. The fidgeting only increased when the speech said "Diana's death has been an enormous loss as far as they are concerned". The speech was about his boys. And also right after he said that he said "And I and They will always feel that loss". I got the sense that when he said "and I" he immediately backtracked to focus solely on the boys. He was trying to keep the speech solely on the boys.

So many people have their opinion about Charles and how bad he was but you only heard Diana’s side. She went on public tv to humiliate him and she did a good job. Can anyone honestly say that if they were more or less forced to marry someone they did not love..how they would react. You can’t make a person love you if they don’t. Charles was brought up in an atmosphere that a very few people are brought up on….one thing is duty…duty first, especially when Edward the Eighth abdicated. Charles was to produce an heir as was the custom from the time of at least Henry the Eighth. How many people in this world would put duty and country before themselves. Years ago maybe, but not now. Surely Diana knew he didn’t love her from the beginning. We could see it…why didn’t she? Being that Diana was brought up on an estate that included being in the presents of the royals, she had to know for the most part the mechanisms of it. I don’t think there’s a person in this world who hasn’t had their heart broke but we don’t go on world wide tv and humiliate any one. She had the wherewithal to do that and she surely did.
