    Meant as an AA, I know, but holy mother of all that is good, is this thing a nightmare on a battlefield.
    Just the fact that enemy as a ZSU somewhere and it can open fire halts any assault. No soldier wants to be even remotely open and have a chance to be fired at by this beast.

    • @capobilotti
      @capobilotti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      It's very lightly armoured AA platform .... but in ambush, on full auto, I think it will disable any tank within few seconds, damaging/destroying barrel, optics, IR, tracks either by shells or metal debris).
      I think the tank crew itself would drown in own shit just from the noise of insane barrage of 23mm bullets hitting the hull and turret.

    • @mfuchs2004
      @mfuchs2004 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Ralof of Riverwood it's a deadly threat to a tank's combat effectiveness and mobility. 2 decades 11H and 11B. A zoot will strip the track right off an M1 with only a few hits. It won't likely survive the return fire, but that tank will be put of the fight. Army tested M1 against Bradley's CG and it stopped em dead where they stood. Took off tracks, rangefinders and sights right fast. Won't penetrate the hull, but it'll send it back for depot repair on a lowboy.

    People who claim the Shilka was ineffective were idiots. It was meant to shoot down helicopters and slow moving attack planes. It was very good at this. Numerous A-10 pilots claimed they feared it. The A-10 was meant to withstand this sort of firepower, but it does so through redundancy. A number of bursts will still down one.
    This one also has the GROM missile, a Polish light Infrared missile of similar effectiveness to the American Stinger, being more effective than all Strela and Igla models.

    Firstly that target could be up to a kilometer away, secondly it was designed as an anti-aircraft system so it's meant to be inaccurate so theres a higher likely hood of a round hitting a jet and thirdly does the accuracy really matter? thousands of rounds being fired in your general direction one is bound to hit and that's all it takes with jets.

    These Shilkas are modified especially for anti-CAS/drone duty. They lack of radar and have greatly reduced thermal signature. So if a thing like that Is properly hidden, the case would most likely be that A-10 won't even know that the one sits there until its too late. And Polish thick forests help to do just that.
    Optical systems mounted on this one are well capable of targeting and following the target within engagement range, even in difficult conditions.

The Shilka in particular is a great SPAAG, but I see more videos of it being used as anti-infantry than as an actual SPAAG. The 23mm HEI-T shells have good penetration to go through walls and have a big enough blast to do major damage once they detonate so that's probably why they used it in Syria and America used a few in Iraq.

      Nowdyas iths backwords. IF they have radar u will see them also and be able to avoid or take evasive action. More modern vehicles ( as this one here) dont rely on radar or even dont have it at all so not to alert enemy. 100% infrared tracker + optic targeting computer so that the target has no idea u are there untill u actually open fire.

    @Beneficiis As you know Schilka is for Short range air defense.Normally they operate with mechanized/armored columns along with air-elements covering them.Attack by Anti-radiation missiles is a ever present danger,of-course.But,Radars, are very useful also.Just as enemy has anti- radar tactics,there are tactics to counter such tactics also.As,always it is a continuous cat and mouse game between the attacker and defenders.

    Since the guns are automatic they already produce a "cone of fire"(not in a straight line), and multiply that with quading(4 joined together) them and yes it looks inaccurate. They are anti aircraft guns though and their primary mission is to produce a wall of lead for aircraft to fly trough, and they do that very well.

    During the South Afican/Angolan war we had one of our Ratel APC hit by one of those at dusk.Troops abandoned the vihicle and the enemy troops fired at it throughout the night

    @Xunstar That's not always truth. Normally the amunnition explodes at a determinated distance. It don't need to hit anything to detonate. Plus, that ammunition don't need to hit to cause damage, it's enough to explode next to the target to cause serious"injures". The body of the planes are very very weak...

    I would argue that it is even good against tanks, so long as the tank doesn't see him. Those 23mm's would wreck the optics and sensors of basically any MBT, set off ERA blocks, and might even wreck the tracks and possibly the engine if hit in a certain spot (with the shilka's rate of fire I am sure that wouldn't be too hard).
    Once again however, the shilka cannot be seen by anything. If it was, forget about it. The shilka would be taken out pretty quickly.

    @pashka1988 Well, from what I know Self-Propelled gun doesnt have the ability to teleport. While on the move it can be attacked like any regular armored vechicle. With radar turned off, it loses any capability to protect itself, unless it has passive targeting system, like opto electronic one.
    It cannot leave if it doesnt know it's been detected. More modern SPAAG have radars that are hard to detect from outside its gun distance. And that works. But Shilka's oryginal radar is crappy...

  • @OnLyCraftthebest

    In the IDF, many times those who drop off from flight school end up in Aerial defense (M-163's and so on), so they have an unofficial saying in AD - "If I ain't flying, NO ONE IS" - which is usually followed by AAM's and/or 20mm shells being blasted.
