From the look of it I can tell you the fish as well as the chips were deep fried in old, overdue oil. About the same or even a more increasing health hazard compared to the unacceptable dirty tables. This food court should be shut douwn immediately
Well it was Tesco who started Horsegate looks like we now have Fishgate that fish probably came out of the river Ganges one of the filthiest rivers in the world. This is what happens when you have a company that wants maximum profit for minimum outlay and little quality control.
That fish had been cooked in very well used oil and had been put straight in the plate from the fryer, not drained. So not only do you end up with a funky old oil taste, it’s worse because the fish wasn’t drained. Chips looked semi-ok, but they’re frozen so. I live in Lancashire and fish and chips for £8.50 is expensive to me.
Love watching your videos, especially when you combine food and driving! If youre looking for suggestions, have you tried Bingley Mega Chippy?...was trending a while ago on tiktok...might be worth a review...keep up the good work and thanks for entertaining us all 😃
A friend of mine has worked in our local Tesco Extra for 20 years. Initially staff were treated great but over the last few years he says it is now nearly unbearable to work for Tesco. Management only interested in money and the staff are viewed very lowly. I guess the table clearers and "chef" aren't very happy or motivated so that's my argument for them. Anyway, thanks for the great video. Cheers Phil
Tesco in Skegness have 2 sometimes 3 people in the cafe One is the cook the other takes the orders Sometimes after bringing an order out they will clear a table or two on the way back to the counter
It would help if cafe customers left their tables as they found them. Before leaving put everything back on the tray and place it in a used-tray rack. Also clean any spillage with a napkin. People who leave a mess behind are no better than litter louts.
No excuse what about health and safety also covid is still among us you know.disgusting I would have gone back to the till and said I have nowhere to sit as no clean tables I’d never eat there again.
I have had the displeasure of having fish and chips at Tesco and it was the worst I've ever eaten. The fish was awful, the batter, despite being crisp, tasted really strange and the mushy peas were simply unedible..the only bright spots for me were the chips which were hot and crisp and the tartar sauce which was wonderful..and like you Lee I had to eat the meal on a really dirty table. I rate Tesco miserable fish and chips 3 out of 10
The cafes in Tesco stores are not owned by Tesco, its an independent company who rent the space. But yes, it looked poor regardless. I note Sainsburys cafes have closed, times are grim.
Capital cafe in byfleet has the cleanest tables & they take your empty plates away as soon as you've finished, the fry ups are out of this world, and the tea is spot on.a total winner every time, give em a go if you get a chance.
I would agree with Christian on this. I have a coffee almost everyday. coffee is good, staff are great and friendly. The senior management are failing their staff and letting down the public.. I have seen what lee has seen. But, generally speaking, the staff are overstretched, understaffed and badly managed. serving staff are expected to take money and place orders, serve food and clean tables, they just struggle to achieve this. it's the senior managers and controllers that need to put a proper structure in place.
Tescos got voted one of the best employers in the country and that their staff are generally happy amongst the workforce. Tescos staff are also the highest paid and have the best sick, benefits and pension scheme amongst the major supermarket brands..
Supermarket cafe's have never been my favourite places to eat, but I've been to various one's from time to time, but never had fish and chips in one. The fish didn't look too great to me either, it looked greasy. The peas weren't drained properly. I've rarely found anywhere much that cook peas that are nice, they're usually hard and taste of nothing, even I can cook peas, it's not rocket science. I'm with you, Lee, on table cleaning, it annoys me big time when they're not cleaned 'properly' and quickly after the previous customer leaves. I know some people are like animals and leave tables in a right state, food leftovers all over and even on the floor. There weren't really that many customers in the place that I could see, so no excuse.
Hi MacMaster, I loved that video. I can’t believe with the amount of chips, & peas you got. You could probably make more chips out of a baby potato compared to the chips you had on that plate lol
We can’t afford a traditional fish and chips on a Friday anymore you are looking at £10 per person in both Redhill Surrey and Allestree Derby which is surprising. So what I do is buy triple cooked oven chips and whilst they are cooking deep fry best cod loin or fillet in a (TH-cam) beer batter. It’s around £2.50pp and everyone loves it. COVID forced us to learn to cook so I can’t see people going back to takeaways also with what has happened to fuel and energy bills. The one positive thing is that myself and our two married daughters have started hosting meal nights from Sunday lunches to fish and chips… ten of us so having some great nights.
Gotta say Lee, I've never done very well with supermarket food. Usually ends up quite expensive once you start adding extras. I've got to say can't beat Wetherspoons for a cheap meal with a pint 👍
Lee, everything looked good to me regardless of the portion size. My suggestion is to always carry disinfectant wipes with you, which is what I do when I eat at restaurants.
Can recommend the Fishmarket Newhaven Edinburgh...Fresh fish filleted daily from fishmongers next door..Big portions of chips too. Well worth a visit when in the city.
Blimey Lee! That fish looked well dodgy, supposed to be white fish, it looked a yellowy grey colour, disgusting. Our Tesco closed their Cafe about two years ago as they were constantly getting complaints about the terrible food served. It's been replaced by a Starbucks coffee shop.
Totally agree!! Their standards for food in their cafes have gone way downhill. Used to eat a few times a month in the cafe near where I live now I avoid it at all costs. Hope all is well, take care
Hi I wouldn't go to Tesco even if they were giving stuff away. Had a bad experience with customer service. There fruit and veg are rubbish. After purchasing tomatoes which went mouldy literally two days after buying them. So I returned to complain, They basically wanted proof and didn't take my word for it. So after no joy I went to the vegetable counter, They were actually selling mouldy carrots. So I grabbed a hand full and returned to customer service desk. They weren't really bothered I demanded to see the produce manager. Didn't get much luck out of him either. So complained to head office. I got a five pound voucher sent to me. Disgusting. I wish I would have phoned the council health and hygiene department. Got them to check the store out. Just to add your marks. Sorry if you could not eat it Mark should be 0. Another great Video fella.
Fish is probably River Cobbler, comes from the Mekong river, the most polluted river on the planet. Think Tescos has renamed it now as people got wise to it.
Thank you for another covert review. Milk before Tea. Highly controversial. The food looked ok, but it didn't justify the price you paid. As for the dirty tables, I think lack of staff, not just at Tescos, but in every industry has impacted service for us all. Unfortunately, most companies now are expecting less staff to do more. It also seemed very quiet, but it could have been down to the time of day. If the bill had been a Fiver, then I would have enjoyed the meal more. Most family's on a tight budget would have eaten it all and looked at that meal as a treat. You get what you pay for, but for that price, you deserved a lot more.
I work at a Morrisons cafe as of right now- we have the issue with dirty tables but it is simply because we are understaffed as hell XD I always feel absolutely awful with everything looking the way it does and having to still serve people
Great video by the way Lee & I like the first instrumental track in the video. I had a similar experience at Asda in Newark as I ordered burger & chips & the chips were red hot & the burger was very dry. You try the cafe at Portland College (which is open to the public & you try some chippys in Eastwood. Keep up the good work 👍
Used to go to Asda in Watford when they had their own restaurant. The freshly cooked fish on a Friday was so big it didn't fit on the plate. Gorgeous it was, served with chips and peas for about £3.99. Restaurant has now been replaced with Costa Coffee or something similar. Never go near it now
With the tables being in the state they were in you would normally attribute that towards the fact that the cafe was heaving and the staff were rushed off their feet. The fact that this wasn't the case here I would assume would point towards staff morale issues and I would hope that somebody senior within Tesco would have seen this video to go in there and order a shake up. If people are going to go into these places and part with their hard earned money then one of the things that you expect is cleanliness- I'm surprised you didn't turn around and walk out.
Supermarket Cafes are typical of supermarkets. Years ago the decision was made for supermarkets to try and do all things for all people, and ultimately after the competition closed down, people realise.....what they do is a bag of shit. Closed down book stores, with experienced book sellers with knolwedge, to give a few rows of heavily discounted books with zero staff. Cafes, often out-sourced to faceless organisations like Compass, staffed by zombies re-heating and deep frying pure crap. Supermarkets have a lot to answer for, now they are suffering because they are way too big and will find it heard to adjust to people now shopping online, because what they offer are cold tin sheds without soul. They could offer a great product in a cafe, with maybe local franchise owners putting out a bit of quality with care. As for the unclean tables, yep see it everywhere.
Well said! It seems that the vast majority of supermarkets have lost the plot and become blinded by greed. Those on the boards of management have no concept of what is happening at ground level and don't care. Quality and service are key to survival in any business. Cutting corners and going cheap to make those extra profit margins and increase in profits to feed the greed of shareholders ultimately leads to their downfall.
It's not just Tesco,, it's all of the supermarkets, my local Sainsbury's cafe has recently closed and it's now a Starbucks. The in house cafes should be an advertisement for the quality of their food but they all serve the cheapest under or overcooked slop.
Hi Lee, please come to Lincoln as it’s not far from you and I’d love to see you review some local places. There’s an amazing pizza place called Slow Rise here 👍🏻
Lee if no one complains about the mess they won't improve. Ps looks like all tesco basics food and definitely frozen. Some things are okay cheap but some aren't.
@@TheMacMaster maybe but if I was wanting them to know straight away I'd tell the manager of the supermarket and leave review on trip advisor can't see much of the cafe food being fresh. You should do some food reviews from Groupon or wowcher.
People are complaining about the frozen fish... what would they seriously expect in a dirt cheap Tesco cafe? Line caught sea bass fresh from the coast?
I used to work at Tesco in the cafe and it was the worst job ever. I'm not going to say anything specific but the words rotten, unhygienic, sickness and cover-up would be used. I'm surprised you weren't hospitalised after eating that fish.
After getting a new car recently, I now park well out the way whenever I go to Supermarkets or shopping centres. Some people couldn't give a monkeys, they smash their car door in to yours then just drive off! It boils my p#%s!
They’ll probably use not cleaning the tables coz of staff shortages coz of the cost of living crisis! They don’t go on about the extreme profits they’ve made during COVID where supermarkets was the only place people could go for 2 years really!!
Ask for your money back..everything on that plate was substandard and defrosted from frozen..take psycho sister Sandra next time as I'm sure she's good at confrontation
Fair play saying you don’t like food waste..but are right saying you didn’t want to eat that garbage..your vids have me wanting fish and chips tomorrow!
I hope someone from Tesco see this , Tesco cafes probably appeal to older people and families who are on a budget who otherwise couldn't afford to eat in a restaurant, why should they be served cr** food ? it's not acceptable. The cleanliness of the cafe should also be of concern to the management as you pointed out they were hardly rushed of their feet. BAD SHOW TESCO
The fish and chips looks like something you would have got at a 1980s Little Chef, or perhaps at a motorway services. Then again, it’s a Tesco cafe so expectations would be low to start with. You’re a brave man.
0/10 I had a breakfast at my local tescos a month ago it was inedible the hash browns were soft because of the grease and the rest of the plate they had never cooked before I think it is a franchise.i had small fish and chips in witherspoon a week ago £8 with a pint of San Miguel and it was excellent
Slack staff not cleaning tables, you needed Ang there to do it, like she does. Price good. Fish did not look that bad, but not great, probably frozen. Chips OK, few more peas required. Meal looked ok but apparently not. I thought your score of 2 was harsh. 5 from me.
Agree with u Mac, fish weren’t cooked enough, chips I guarantee u frozen & the peas likely frozen - have to give this place 3/10… Now for a question because I’m visiting over there next yr, what is the etiquette of “Tipping in the restaurants & pubs” in the UK??? Thanks Mac🙏
I when there last week and had the fish chips and peas. My fish was disgusting very oily and flat, the batter was very greasy. I got half a dozen chips. The only nice thing on the plate was the tarta sauce. Never again.
You should use the free car charging at Tescos, larger bays so more room for you car and save you some money on your home electricity, win win. That fish looked oily and terrible. The table cleanliness was appalling. Shame on you Tescos
Lee, if your after crap fish and chips, Try the chippy in Tibshelf village on the main road. OMG thats an eye opener, Rude staff, Deaf staff and lousy food
Not great, the fish looked so thin I’m surprised there was actually any fish under the batter! Chips looked ok. They will blame dirty tables or short staffing due to covid, cos that’s what everyone says nowadays! I know you’ve reviewed Morrisons Breakfast b4 but me and my mum had brekkie at Morrisons yesterday which was absolutely gorgeous & at a great price considering how much things cost these days. Gr8 vlog as usual Lee.
I was always told by a friend that used to own a chippy, that if the fish looks curly when it comes out, then they have the oil temperature too high! That thing was reaching for the ceiling!! Lol
I thought it was looking ok when it arrived, then it went downhill from there, I’m assuming it was frozen fish it looked awful once you opened it up. Clearing tables is a must and when they aren’t cleaning them that’s a disaster, shame!
🤣 Another Brilliant Vlog 👍 The ex wife works at Tesco Stretford and my Daughter goes in regular. She said she never has the fish & chip's she goes to the chippy 🤣
My best mate Bainy and his partner Ashley went to Tesco for the fish and chips up here in Stenhousemuir MacMaster. They both agreed it was repulsive so they went to chillies and got Donner Burgers
Welllll back in the day when tesco cafe was run by actual tesco workers the food was so much better..then the franchises came in. The store i worked at had staff canteen where tesco colleagues worked in so food was ok depending who was on, but also that changed another company had it got rid of the staff brought their own and it jesus christ it was carnage! If its the same company who have taken over the customer cafe and the cleaners then this does not suprise me one bit!
Mr Mac, that's why it said fish & Chips and not Cod & chips etc. Tesco most probably use the cheapest fish available, but hopefully not as cheap as Vietnamese River Cobbler.
Fish could be basa, roughly translated as Vietnamese river fish. AKA pangasius. Can be found usually unbattered in the supermarket freezer aisle. Very cheap and has a really horrible odd taste.
Yeah, the supermarkets have been pushing basa for several years. I've never tried it, having read up on Wikipedia where it comes from and how it is farmed. Pollock is a cheaper alternative to cod or haddock and is a member of the cod family.
@@brendamorgan did you know our fishermen export 70% of their catches? Crazy we’re a island nation surrounded by the sea, healthy sea full of fish, crab, Lobster and what do we do? We export most of it abroad all over the world.
Would you moan, if the chips were cold? One get what one pays for. I would argue that a chippie serves far too many chips, you only have to look at how many people leave half of them.
Had a lovely dine in fish and chips at Bells in Durham Market place as always large cod .. £11.50 with bread and butter plus a fentimans ginger beer absolutely beautiful with curry sauce and there complimentary tartare sauce (they make in house so I was told at the larger Newton Hall restaurant..). Get your car charged and give the North East of England County Durham a visit plenty of good stuff over the Scotch Corner border... Bring your coat you might need it
Hi Lee. Just because the staff are nice doesn't condone the state of the place and as for the food., yuk, yuk and yuk lol! Poor you having to eat it. Thanks for sharing the vlog as always Lee. 🥰🌞🥰Xxx
Awful 🙁 All Tesco’s Extra must be the same as hubby has had this a few times in between working in Manchester he said they’re not great All through the so called pandemic tables were meticulously wiped down & sanitised Seems that’s all gone out the window 🤷♀️ Chips are just frozen Steak Cut from Tesco’s Glad you managed to find the few peas Fish also looked like Tesco’s finest frozen Altogether a poor meal It’s 2/10 only coz the tea was wet
The Fish & Chip shops don't want to put their prices-up, but they're in a difficult 'Plaice'!!🐟 In-fact I saw a customer complaining in my local the other day, but apparently they're always moaning though as they've got a 'chip' on their shoulder!!🤦🏻♂️
Lee first off it was expensive. The fish looked great until you cut in to it and ate it. The peas were hiding, the chips looked the best thing on the plate. My only comment is that you could have sat anywhere as it wasn't busy yet you chose to sit at a dirty table, why didn't you move to a clean one, there must have been one.
Menu just says Fish and Chips.....if they don't state cod or haddock ( haddock is my preference) what are they hiding ? could be Pollock, Coley or possibly vile Basa aka Vietnamese fishfarmed catfish. Never buy without knowing the full spec.
Old oil? Not replaced regularly enough? Could be the cause of the funky taste of the fish. Watery peas will be in a big pan of water keeping warm and dished out with a slotted spoon but not drained for long enough
Yeah I agree with you about the cleanliness I’ve been to a few Tesco cafes and I’ve had to move crockery off the table then wipe my table with an anti-bac wipe. The last time my dad went to one he was I’ll
Quite honestly I thought the fish looked a bit 'glassy' in places - ie not cooked properly - something easy to fix at home in the microwave or give it another 5mins in the air oven and I have to hold my hand up to the odd occasion when that is necessary! If it tasted odd that is likely down to oil which needs changing up and/or fish which is not entirely 'fresh'. I'd have probably taken a tissue from my pocket to deal with the watery peas - but you shouldn't have to - not rocket science to use a slotted spoon. Thanks for the heads up warning - and I guess we have to accept that this is only ONE outlet - others may be far superior!
Went to Tesco in South Queensferry last year got 2 mack and cheese and chips, for 2 people and tea for one, mack and cheese came in two little ramekins and was microwaved, chips were huge, cost 13.50 if my memory serves me well, never been back.
Terrible shame on you Tesco Extra fish was probably Vietnamese catfish peas ;looked disgusting dry and hardly a spoonful chips not much better 2 out of 10 fer me!!
Understaffed and undertrained. I had the misfortune to eat at a large Tescos close to the home of my late parents whilst emptying their house. Your experience with Tescos is far from unique.
Not only have prices gone up in all supermarkets like Tesco they get you twice by ripping you off at the petrol stations. Profits before people as always with big orgs.
I'm lucky enough to live near 'The Little Chippy' in Tyldesley, Manchester. Food from there is lovely if you are ever down that way, and it's also a winner of awards.
If they can't be bothered keeping the public areas clean, dread to think what the kitchen looks like! Embarrassing Tesco!!
That table must have been filthy as Lee will happily eats from the top of bins 😂
From the look of it I can tell you the fish as well as the chips were deep fried in old, overdue oil.

Always a really good meal
I used to work at Tesco in the cafe and it was the worst job ever. I'm not going to say anything specific but the words rotten, unhygienic, sickness and cover-up would be used. I'm surprised you weren't hospitalised after eating that fish.
After getting a new car recently, I now park well out the way whenever I go to Supermarkets or shopping centres.
Some people couldn't give a monkeys, they smash their car door in to yours then just drive off! It boils my p#%s!
Buy a Citroen C4 Cactus lol
we're in the middle of a robbery my friend, not a cost of living crises
So True.
Reminds me of school dinners when I was in my teens. That's why I always took sandwiches for lunch. 😆
The fish and chips looks like something you would have got at a 1980s Little Chef, or perhaps at a motorway services. Then again, it’s a Tesco cafe so expectations would be low to start with. You’re a brave man.
Odd that we used the Little Chef for decades, and always found it cheap and cheerful and value for the money.
Noticed supermarket cafes have gone right downhill over the last year or two, not just one of them either, all of them.
5 from me.
Lee, I’m going to Yarmouth on Monday and I. Know where I’m going for my grub, on your recommendation. BEEF DRIPPING!!!
Yes!!! Enjoy and have a fantastic time. Tell em I said hi.
Thanks Mac🙏
Don't eat yellow snow and don't wash your hair with your hat on
We don't really tip over here. I do give a few quid direct to the server if they have shown good service.
I see you got a rise out of that fish, it doesn't matter how busy they are it's part of their job description.
A (bad) habit I have is to wipe the cutlery down with a serviette first. If the tables are dirty so might the knives and forks be.
Lee, if your after crap fish and chips, Try the chippy in Tibshelf village on the main road. OMG thats an eye opener, Rude staff, Deaf staff and lousy food
Always milk after the tea!!I worked for Tesco for 14 years! That table is pretty clean!Tesco day staff ain"t the hardest workers!!
Lol
Yep. Looked rank!! Guess its fairly cheap for fish and chips but a proper chippy has larger overheads than a major supermarket
Absolutely minging inside of fish looked wet where were the peas???? Sorry but I'd of sent that back and got my money back
That looked disgusting! And the peas, I think 2/10 was very generous.
I thought it was looking ok when it arrived, then it went downhill from there, I’m assuming it was frozen fish it looked awful once you opened it up. Clearing tables is a must and when they aren’t cleaning them that’s a disaster, shame!
Think the sole redeeming factor of that visit was that the teapot wasn’t one of those leaky metal monstrosities.
🤣 Another Brilliant Vlog 👍 The ex wife works at Tesco Stretford and my Daughter goes in regular. She said she never has the fish & chip's she goes to the chippy 🤣
It looked good from the edge of the table, but when you dug in, every little didn't help.
My best mate Bainy and his partner Ashley went to Tesco for the fish and chips up here in Stenhousemuir MacMaster. They both agreed it was repulsive so they went to chillies and got Donner Burgers
Do love a donner burger and I do get you tesco serve frozen food like asda and Morrisons.
Never had a good experience with the Tesco coffee shop. Try asking for a extra shot of coffee!😫
3 days ago you were driving a real car. Thought you were keeping it for the weekend
pulling that batter back from the fish looked a bit like peeling back a septic scab from a wound
Fish could be basa, roughly translated as Vietnamese river fish. AKA pangasius. Can be found usually unbattered in the supermarket freezer aisle. Very cheap and has a really horrible odd taste.
Yuck! Always reject that. It's disgusting. Don't know why Britain imports it, we are an island surrounded by water with good haddock and cod in it!👍
Yeah, the supermarkets have been pushing basa for several years.
I thought it looked good for £6.50 👍
Had a lovely dine in fish and chips at Bells in Durham Market place as always large cod ..
🥰🌞🥰Xxx
Awful 🙁 All Tesco’s Extra must be the same as hubby has had this a few times in between working in Manchester he said they’re not great
All through the so called pandemic tables were meticulously wiped down & sanitised
Seems that’s all gone out the window 🤷♀️
Chips are just frozen Steak Cut from Tesco’s
Glad you managed to find the few peas Fish also looked like Tesco’s finest frozen
Altogether a poor meal
It’s 2/10 only coz the tea was wet
The Fish & Chip shops don't want to put their prices-up, but they're in a difficult 'Plaice'!!🐟
In-fact I saw a customer complaining in my local the other day, but apparently they're always moaning though as they've got a 'chip' on their shoulder!!🤦🏻♂️
This Tesco cafe should be boarded up for being a health hazard all that crap lying about. Disgusting 🤮
Never buy without knowing the full spec.
pollock and coley are delicious too though.
Old oil? Not replaced regularly enough? Could be the cause of the funky taste of the fish. Watery peas will be in a big pan of water keeping warm and dished out with a slotted spoon but not drained for long enough
0/10 for that muck - not fit to throw out to stray dogs. Spoons far better and get a pint of 6.6% Leffe thrown in all for £10.65
Yeah I agree with you about the cleanliness I’ve been to a few Tesco cafes and I’ve had to move crockery off the table then wipe my table with an anti-bac wipe.
@@RizlaaKing not fully cooked!
Please try Whiteheads fish and chips at Hornsea, travelled from Leeds to go there today, and were 11/10 off the charts.
Chips inedible (frozen), fish was mingin', Tesco's praises he won't be singing !
Fish should have been white not grey. Iwill not eat any where with dirty tables.
I like grey fish though
What's the name of that music track that was playing during the montage..?
I got it off Epidemic Sound. It should Shazam. 👍🏼
Why would you buy fish and chips at a Tesco Cafe ?
Because its on the menu, and to review it obviously lmao
I'm lucky enough to live near 'The Little Chippy' in Tyldesley, Manchester.
Food from there is lovely if you are ever down that way, and it's also a winner of awards.
DREADFUL! THATS MY RATING sad display 😢 2 out of 10 for the nice lady
