    Happy to see good progress. If you attempt the heat gun treatment, find a piece of old ABS plastic (that's probably what it is) to practice on first, keep it moving, check for pre-filter foam that will melt below the scuttle and MOST important, protect the windscreen and it's seal from the heat. If you repaint the wheel trims, after rubbing down, be sure to use some plastic adhesion promoter or plastic primer as it's more commonly called. She deserves it.

    You know why you enjoyed tinkering so much with the Matiz. It is more modern and more sensible in terms of design than some of the weirder stuff on the fleet, that requires a higher level of skill to work on then you or I might possess. I tinkered with our 10 year old Skoda on the weekend, changed the battery over (the original Varta lasted just over 10 years and sadly had to be changed, you'd expect a bit more surely, LOL), a note to owners with more electronics in their cars, a sad battery can really affect how everything runs. The idle improved and the choke reappeared after the battery change. So fitting the new battery with a higher CCA made a big difference and I checked the oil, which was nice light brown shade and she was ready to go.

    Ian, I have experienced poor idling on a car before, which drifted between running rich and running lean. After changing the idle control valve to no avail, I discovered it was simply a duff engine temperature sensor giving poor readings to the ECU and consequently messing up the air/fuel mixture. A very cheap fix! Simply unplugging the bad sensor worked in the short term before replacing it.

  • @williamgreer4087
    @williamgreer4087 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For your plastics, I'd recommend just scotch brite then a quick coat of satin black, a much more permanent solution for faded plastics and easy to "top up" if it ever flakes off.

    Having had a look at the spark plugs Ian I think you may well have an air leak on the inlet check the small vacuum hoses first ,then with the engine running gently spray a drop of brake cleaner around the pipe work and inlet manifold to head joint and see if it makes any difference to the way that the engine is running good luck.

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There was a leak on the elbow, which has since been replaced. I wonder if the faulty idle control valve could also cause a lean mixture.

    • @mrcogginsgarage7062
      @mrcogginsgarage7062 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idle control valve might if faulty give you a leaner mixture as it will be out of range,bearing in mind that the lamda sensor will to a certain amount adjust the fuel ratio to compensate for a poor burn,was your car pinking at all Ian ?.

Only available to order online, one application made the original rubber rear spoiler and black plastic bumpers on my 1984 CRX look brand new again. Perhaps more importantly, it also makes door shut rubber seals nice and soft as well. Absolutely phenomenal product.

    For black plastic, I've used the very expensive C4 Gtechnic and it did nothing, a heat gun works but can be patchy and doesn't last long. Various other fluids from Halfords lasted no time. The best thing for me was Cherry Blossom liquid shoe polish, applied by the sponge end or paintbrush. This lasts for ages. It might all depend on the type of plastic though.

    Don’t use a heat gun, it draws oil up out of the plastic to darken it. This leads to the plastics becoming brittle as they are effectively dehydrated. You need to feed the plastic with oil. Linseed oil is the classic, but cheap smooth peanut butter works a treat.

    The coolant leak looked to be because the clip was around the hose and not clamping the hose to the metal pipe. Dodgy idle and going a bit high can be down to air leaks around the inlet manifold. Vac hoses maybe cracked or holed due to chafing.

As long as it goes when I need it, which often means a drive over a mountain range and back. I think maybe you have a vacuum leak - air getting in that's not been metered or accounted for. I say that because the plugs you took out look like the engine had been running too lean, plus the ecu is running the engine too fast at idle, trying to compensate for the mixture being off. Unless, like you say - someone before you was messing with the idle settings, because in theory on an ecu controlled engine you should not have to touch that at all. I hope that is the case, and you are just putting it back to where it should be, rather than you have just tried to mask a problem by lowering the speed down. Might be worth having a quick look for vacuum leaks, get a length of rubber hose, put one end to your ear, then go around the inlet manifold and other joints that could be letting in air. But great to see you out tinkering again - and enjoying it, that is what it's all about!

    Cramp is a sign of depleted Potassium levels in your body Ian. Potassium is one of the elements that your body will actually store up and use over a long period time - only a trace amount of it is needed for good muscle function.
    You would be likely to get enough Potassium from your diet if you have quite a varied intake, but possibly not, so a recommendation would be to eat a banana every couple of weeks. Bananas have a lot of Potassium in.
    Also, from seeing your sudden recoil when working there, it looks maybe like more of a 'tendonitis' issue than cramp, cos that hits you right on the inside of your wrist when grasping tightly.

    Plugs. First check they are the right ones for the engine (temperature of plug). If ok maybe you are running a bit lean. They look brand new so 30 seconds in a plug cleaner, check the gap and back in they go. Look at them again in a years time.

    Should have put a can of Liquid Moly flush in the oil for 15 minutes prior to changing the oil. Would have cleaned up the valve train nicely after your lack of maintenance in 2 years. Try spraying some Quick Start in the engine bay once it's all buttoned up, if the revs raise you have a hole in a pipe somewhere pulling in air.

      As it happens, I did an oil change in February which I'd forgotten about...

    Are you sure it's not the old oil burning off from the leaking rocker cover. There must be some way of finding out what the tickover rpm should be?

    Myrtle is looking smart now, she looks better without the wheel trims which if not held by cable ties can become lethal Frisbees. Glad you did not drop a screwdriver or wrench on your tootsies. What with the burn and the muscle strain you had enough injuries without having to hobble as well. Take her for a long run to settle her down again after investigating the source of the water vapour.

    Hey Ian. Thought about chucking some Redex or STP Injector cleaner in? Tried it last week on my 90K Mazda, noticed a difference.

    Now Miss. Hubnut is working you could help her by cleaning the toilet with your drill and Chinese brush . 🤔 Myrtle looking great. The farmer must wonder why you seem to be constantly talking to yourself.

    The best thing you can do with that black trim is take it off and paint it. The sun brats up all that plastic and degrades it. That is why it's chalky. Paint it and forget it. I would also paint all the wheel covers as close a color as you can find so they all look the same.

    Why does everything used to clean wheels look like a toilet brush? Is the toilet brush drill attachment another thing from Wish...?

    plastics can be Revitalised with Vaseline, or fine/light/sewing machine oil. More often plastics dry and are made of oil!

    White plugs (and often exhaust too) indicate that the engine is running too lean. Does it have an inlet air leak?

    You should not be messing with the throttle stop screw, idle is controlled purely through the stepper motor air bypass. The position of this stepper for various engine conditions are "learned" by the ECU, so if you disconnect the battery it's quite normal for idle control to be poor until it has re-learned these settings.

      Cheers. Problem is, someone had already messed with that screw, presumably because the idle control valve was already failing/gummed up. I started her yesterday and she ran much better. Need to put some miles on her now.

      I had an old mk1 Shogun with a failed stepper motor on the idle control. Couldn’t find a replacement for a sensible price so I just disconnected the stepper motor, found the sweet spot position on it and all was good.

    If you haven't done so already, I would recommend purchasing a decent / branded headlight lens restoration kit. Once they've been cleaned up and protected and what with the new front plate, Myrtle will look showroom fresh once again.

      The headlamps are annoying. Last time I washed her, both lamps steamed up and now the cloudiness is on the inside! Looks like you can remove the lenses though. I may have to (though I do also have a spare pair of lamps).
