This classic movie holds a special place in my heart because I knew all the real people the movie depicts. I was a senior at T.C. when those events happened. Some old-timers don’t like the movie because it takes great liberties with the facts, but most of us love it because it is great drama with an important lesson. Julius died just a year or two ago after spending many years traveling around the country, giving inspirational talks on race relations.
Some truths and untruths: Alexandria was not a southern hick town but a cosmopolitan, metropolitan suburb of 110,000. T.C. had been integrated since 1965 and at the time of the events (1971) was 30% Black. Hammond (Yoast’s school) had just two Black students because it was in the rich end of town, and G.W., in the poor end, was 60% Black. Race was not the main issue at T.C.; school rivalry was the issue, due to the merging of the three schools. Boone was not new to the school. He had been assistant coach at T.C. for two years preceding the events, and he was my P.E. teacher in his first year, when I was a sophomore. I liked Boone a lot and had a good relationship with him even though I was not a football player (I was varsity cross-country and track). As most people know, Bertier’s first car accident was not as shown. It actually occurred after the season, but the movie changed it for dramatic purposes. T.C.’s hardest game was not in the State Championship, but in the regular season, 21-16 versus Marshall. T.C. had 9 shutouts in 13 games. I saw all the regular season games. Oddly, the team’s best star was not in the movie; he was a running back who led the state in yards and touchdowns. Yoast was one of the best coaches in the state at the time, and there was widespread resentment over Boone’s selection as head coach. It is true that the training camp at Gettysburg transformed the team, and students were marveling over it when they came back. Boone was a hard-driving coach as depicted, but he had a great heart for the game and for his athletes. Singing among the Black athletes (including some basketball players) was a longtime tradition at T.C, usually done in the locker room. The players were allowed to wear their jerseys in school at any time, and they actually acted as a calming influence as depicted briefly in the film. I witnessed an incident where a player used moral suasion and school spirit to stop a fight that was starting.
My favorite true thing in the movie is an event I witnessed: Ron Bass’s arrival. It actually occurred at T.C. in the first week after training camp. I was with the cross-country team, warming up at the end of the track straightaway. At the other end, a fancy car drove up the ramp from the parking lot and onto the track. Everyone was amazed; cars weren’t supposed to do that. Ron (with very long hair) and a military officer in uniform (his father) got out of the car and talked to Boone, who had stopped practice and came over to them to see what was going on. Later we learned that he was a hippie quarterback from California. He was terrific, both a fine passer and a great runner. He played much more than was shown, and he always kept our opponents guessing.
Bertier was a great success in the wheelchair Olympics in the shot put and discus throw. My brother met him once in the gym in those later years, and they played ping pong. Bertier won, because he was excellent my brother says.
Honestly, like I've heard that the facts are a little off in this movie, but I never cared, it's just a great film and you don't even have to know or love football to appreciate it either!

My HS Gar-Field played against TC Williams in the 80s. They still had a similar warmup routine at that time.
When she (the little Girl Sheryl) grows up, she's becoming a Cheerleader and saves the World... LOL

I live in Northern Virginia and I grew up in the area a few miles from T.C. Williams High School. I was a child during that time, but I was too young to follow local football at that time. I know T.C. Williams always had a good football team, but I never knew about this story, and the racism that took place. I guess my parents sheltered me from racism during that time, I'm Filipino/American. The movie so inspiring. Everytime I drive by T.C. Williams I think about this movie.
First day of camp, Coach Boone was not only trying to set the tone and assert his dominance, but employ a form of psychological warfare. His intent was not just to be hard to make his players hard, but to represent a common "enemy" so that his players could find common ground. His treatment of the black players further established that he was not there to play favorites with anyone regardless of their skin color.
Think you were a bit too enthusiastic with the editing :-) , skipped a lot of great scenes :-) but glad you watched it, great movie !
I thought the same thing.
A lot of these reactors overedit the movies because they afraid of copyright. They overdo it. It's annoying. I try to find channels who aren't trying to make it their income.
She doesn't do the editing. It's gotten a lot worse lately. I adore Dasha but not as excited for her vids as much anymore.

Skipping over the Gettysburg scene kinda stinks because it’s that speech that turned the whole movie. That being said, great reaction video Dasha.
I thought the same thing. But something I told myself is she’s not familiar with the significance of Gettysburg or the United States history for that matter, so we gotta help her with that. That being said, that Gettysburg scene is very revere, because that was the site of a significant battle thatstuck out there in the American Civil War, which had a lot to do about slavery and other matters at the time with people of different ethnic backgrounds and core beliefs of the time. Good job otherwise.

One of my fav movies. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's a great video as always. The part where the mom gets a standing ovation always gets me teary-eyed, too.
Been involved in football for 60 years ... played from age 6 to 20, coached from age 21 to 41, started officiating at age 42 and on my 25 season. Football is my life! Spread my ashes on the sideline.🏈🏈

@@ChurchNietzsche Playing (sitting the bench), coaching (stalking the box) and officiating as a headlinesman. My whole career was spent on the sideline. I think the only time I ever got in the endzone was walking to and from the locker rooms. LOL.
It varies from place to place, but yes there are many parts of America where the local football team represents all the pride and love one has for his or her community.
Football is a double edged sword Dasha. Yes football is fun but is also grueling hardwork that goes into it. When you're a player training is year round to make yourself as best as you can. Loved this reaction. Would like to see you react to more football 😊
Bussing was when school busses were integrated ( black and white students and taken to I segregated schools). Opponents of bussing wanted to keep the schools segregated
Busing was a hot topic in the 1970s, and it kind of settled down in a few years. I was in high school in the early 70s. Our school was huge, but we only had one black kid in it. He didn't seem to get much prejudice though, everybody just kind of thought of him as an interesting oddity.
Thinking of someone as an interesting oddity is just soft bigotry. And the distance between soft and hard bigotry is small. @@MaBer-67391

She has probably never heard of a bus (or at least the word), which is a vehicle designed to carry many people to their destination.
@libertyresearch-iu4fy She lives on Canada now, which has busses (as does Russia), but bussing is a very specific term I get her not understanding.
They started bussing at my school in third grade. Some were upset due to racism, but most if the kids getting bussed were going to not see a lot of friends that had made the previous years and didn't want to take a long bus ride to a strange school.

Well made movie. A good portion is Disney bullshit made up cartoons villains but it's a decent watch if you can ignore all that.
To all the questions you were asking- there’s a reason why some of founding fathers (I think Franklin in particular if I’m not wrong) said slavery was the rattle snake hiding under the tables during the drafting the constitution. At one point (forget the case) the Supreme Court said racism was particularly “venomous” and that it had to act because of the charge it brings and can lead to.
That up-down scene ….. and the whistle ……. still makes my legs hurt just seeing it lol.

Every PE teacher in Australia in the 2000s would throw this on whenever it was raining too heavily for sports or they couldn't find something for us to do. No idea why but it was always Remember The Titans.
This movie shows that to have change you have to be the change. They vanilla coated the issue alot but they got the point across that they were the ones that had to change to succeed. Good movie luv Denzel in this movie. Thanks for sharing Dasha ❤️💛

"Scrubs" is a good show to fall asleep to. I've seen em all so I don't get too invested, and listening keeps my brain from thinking too much.
Another great football movie is 'We Are Marshall'.
High school and college football games are generally more intense than professional football games are since the pros have incentive not to play that hard.
Friday night lights is a top tier football movie
Awe it’s so interesting that you aren’t familiar with American football. Like she says at the beginning of the movie…football is a way of life here in America. Especially in the SOUTH! If you ever plan a trip to America and if it’s between the months of Aug and Oct let me know and I will take you to high school football game! My dad is the band director of a high school in Georgia, I think it’s extra fun to sit with the band and get the full experience. Hell we would even be able to walk down to the field during the game. NO JOKE! We would have to do the whole thing like dressing in the school colors and eating concession stand food. High school games are a lot different than college. College might as well be pro football bc they play in huge arenas and there are thousands of fans. High school is more intimate and has its own atmosphere. But we could always go to a college game too. Tail gate and everything.
You should check out The Replacements with Keanu. I think you would enjoy it.

I'm not sure why the same people come here constantly to just hate on Dasha editing. I mean, if you all hate it so much, there are other reactors out there. Instead of coming here to patronize constantly. Dasha is working through copyright strikes on her channel that she has gotten in the recent past, so she is more aggressive with the editing to not get her channel taken down. The next several videos are like this too so. Im sure she is well aware her editing could be better, but this is a choice by her in how she is editing, so patronising her every video here in the comments about her editing and what it takes to be a react channel wont help none :)
It's called feedback and not everyone is doing it in a abrasive manner. Some of us want to continue to support Dasha, while being able to express our opinions in a respectful manner.

Hello low light Dasha!😊 1 mile = 1.6 kilometers, Dasha. We should have changed to the metric system many years ago in the U.S. They actually started to in the 1970s, then it was halted. Yep, I remember busing happened in 1974 in Boston. They would bus in black or white students out of their neighborhoods and mix them together in schools. It was ordered by a judge. There were many riots and protests over this. It is funny seeing little Hayden Panettiere in this.😉 Great reactions to this inspirational true story, Dasha!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

The editing of scenes seems unusually all over the place in this vid.
Normally like your reactions but you edited and cut this short way too much. Skipped entire scenes and character dialogues that were very important to the story

The only two named actors who were actually teenagers when this was filmed were Ryan Gosling and Kate Bosworth. All of the rest of the main players were at least 20 and if fact the guy who plays Julius Campbell was 31 and the one who played Garry Bertier was 25. In the scene where Denzel Washington picks a player up by the seat of his pants, that is Ryan Gosling.
If interested in Civil War era, l'd recommend "Free State of Jones"
I just showed my kids this movie the other day, T.C. Williams Highschool (or whatever they call it now) is a few miles from where I live and drive by it all the time so it's a cool little piece of our local history.
Invincible with Mark Wahlberg is another good one to watch, that is based on a true story.
I know the feeling I was captain for 2years in a mining town of tom price w.a Australia team was the tigers and 1995 assistant coach for the cable Beach colts

Loved the reaction dasha.. but the editting was a bit to much... GL with the new place..
I remember the first time I watched this movie. I had never seen a trailer or anything, had no idea what to expect. Only reason I saw it was my brother was an extra (one of the guys in uniform running plays) and I hoped to see him get slammed a few times. Never did show his face but the quality of this flick made it a regular showing in my home ever since.

“Bussing” has to do with when the south first let black peoples and white people go to the same school, but since black people weren’t allowed to live in certain areas they had to take special busses to school.

I'd say Slapshot over Miracle. I mean why would a Russian now living in Canada want to watch a movie about the Americans winning the Olympics?
@@tonyrossell832 Slap Shot is arguably the best sports movie ever. And having had two kids that played the game at a high level, and have seen this movie a million times, you won't find any arguments from me about watching Slap Shot ever. Still I think it sounds like Dasha is not very familiar with great tradition of hockey greatness in her own country and though its true 'Miracle' comes entirely from a U.S. POV I think she might still find it interesting just how dominant the USSR was.
Best Denzel movie ever?...No, but pretty close.

It's a great movie but unfortunately it misrepresents the character of Boone pretty badly. From what I understand he was a hardass that no one liked. Also the school was already integrated by the time he came in, and the Titans were already champtions.
But it makes for a great story.
Love this channel, but the editing was a real hack job on this one.
I think we know better now adays that the hjman body needs water ans electrolytes when working out in the hot sun! So many athletes have had strokes ans heart attacks.
