I agree; we definitely need more Billy Ocean in today's world. Suddenly, life has new meaning to me.

I always attempt to be word perfect, but with most projects, especially when it's a quick turnaround, I don't let myself worry too much. If I get a few words wrong or there's some minor paraphrasing, I try to let it go. They're looking for the character more than anything else. I think what will always hurt you, though, is if you're all over the place, which shows lack of prep and/or respect for the writer. Also, just like reading from a teleprompter is a skill, so is grabbing lines quickly from the page and coming back up. I'm still trying to improve on that one, and it can make a world of difference.

You were singing and missed another perfect opportunity to pull out your guitar. Shame on you!

I'm sure being a reader for other actors has improved your cold-reading skills. Amirite?

Seriously, the BEST advice on memorization! I personally don't like to memorize for an audition, I love the freshness of it being like a cold read each time. That helps it keep like a discovery to yourself, which allows for feelings showing up first, before the words. I also liked the advice about training the short term memory, because that is actually what we need at the real shoots, since they change the text so often. So, it all works out together perfectly! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This channel keeps me grounded, in all senses! :D

I was just on set, and I had two scenes where I had one scene with no lines and the other with lines. The day we did first team rehearsal we were reading the scene, and the director and EP were stating we have a writing problem and that I should say something instead of what was on the page, I was given a few more lines but the lines kept changing but it was a learning point for me. Usually, I know my lines and we rehearsal and shoot it. Be ready when your onset you never know what will happen. Oh! by the way good job on "Found" I haven't read for the show...Yet!

Thanks for sharing. It's so common. Even if there was a table read, there's something different about hearing the dialogue on the day. So much is rewritten in the moment. Just experienced it myself last week!

I just have to memorize as I can’t see without my glasses and I don’t wear them for auditions 😞

Understood! And many actors I know are dyslexic, which can be a big hurdle when it’s a lot of copy and very little time.
