Gun Restoration, 1863 Remington Black Powder Revolver

New developments on this Revolver have come to light after some further research and help from some gun enthusiasts. The gun has been confirmed to be a 1863 Remington with a replica barrel. The stamped serial numbers on the trigger guard confirm this. Along with the letter stamped on the Cylinder. Also the bottom of the frame has a serial number out of 20,000. Hello everyone we found this gun magnet fishing in our hometown of only 15,387 people. We are new to restoring old weapons. So we do not know what we are doing 100%. An easy rust removal trick is to totally disassemble the gun, soak the parts (Minus the grips) in mineral spirits for a day, and scrub the parts with steel wool. If there's still rust, spray with mineral spirits and scrub again until done. For really hard rust, use a dremel with a wire brush attachment. For the grips, soak and/or spray with Simple Green and scrub with a hard bristle brush (Not wire or brass). Also, I'd recommend refinishing the gun to make it last longer. You can buy bottles of gun bluing finish and stock finish at most gun stores and sporting goods stores (Walmart even has it). I'm not a professional gunsmith by any means, this is just my personal technique I use. Best of luck to you and I can't wait to see more guns videos like this.
thanks so much for the advice i can use that to restore my 1969 ruger 357 magnum black hawk i found. We have restored a sawed off shotgun on the channel as well and we did a way better job filming and restoring as well. We did not blue the shogun because of the horrible pitting. But the Ruger will get re blued we already have the kit for it thanks.
Also I would wipe the gun down with oil to keep surface rust off
Boil the pistol. Boiling can convert the rust back into blueing. Check out Mark Novak or Anvil youtube before you strip the finish off
I kept yelling "for the love of GOD stop rinsing it off with water" use mineral spirits or acetone.

The gunsmith in me cringes, BUT, given the fact that there is literally no collector value in the gun and they’re not gunsmiths, I actually think they did a pretty good job turning it into a cool story and a nice wall hanger.

Just a wall hanger though. It's a pity... You haven't noticed on that gun the rotation cylinder hand was missing. That apart nice work.
A few parts and I could make that gun run again. the pressure for black powder is really low and it would probably run fine. At least for a test and then back to the wall.

yea i know the video is horrible done bad, the music was bad, the voiceover was bad, and the restoration was sub par and not done all the way through hence the nipples were not taken off and cleaned out! Im aware of this, it was my very first time cleaning a completely rusted out gun. did not spend any time watching how to properly restore a gun. SO yea i agree it was not a good video if i would have done a good job it could have a million views instead of 135,000

I used to work for Navy Arms. The owner, Val Forgett Sr, started the whole reproduction firearms industry virtually single handed. He took museum quality examples of the original guns, made new machine drawings of them then contracted Italian arms makers to produce the guns. Uberti, Armi San Marco, Pedrosoli. He brought guns and cartridges back that hadn’t been around in many many years. The quality was high. Many people thought they were just expensive toys until he went to Africa with one of his black powder rifles and took the big five with them. He was friends with Bill Ruger and together they pioneered the use of investment casting to make production gun parts. I had a great time working for that company, I liked seeing the care and effort you put into restoring that weapon for display. Unfortunately he passed years ago but I’m sure he would have appreciated it as well.
oh wow thanks so much for sharing that awesome story, i loved it. We have a Ruger now too that we just started restoring tonight. It is a 1969 old model 357 magnum black hawk. We found it loaded too, called the cops and they took it from us but i kept in touch with them and six months later we got it back because it was not tied to anything. We got it back loaded and we are now disassembling it. Thanks for watching, this video was our first of restoring anything so we did not know what we were doing. When you cock the hammer back the cylinder is supposed to rotate something is still not right

This content is great, some people might talk shit but most of them have never done any type of restoration at all. Id rather see somebody start this project with no experience than throw the gun in the trash. Plus the majority of people watching are also seeing what you do correct and what youre doing incorrect, and in many situations seeing something incorrect is just as good because of the "how not to do it aspect". Anyways thanks for your video and keep making these types of videos. We'd love to see the knowledge youve gained with your experience!

You need a bronze or synthetic hammer if you’re going to be pounding on the pistol. And, get yourself a set of gunsmiths screw drivers, they fit in the slots without running the risk of damaging steel.

yea we have been getting negative comments on tis video for a long time but oh well, we just finished the shotgun alot better.
Uberti still makes these revolvers. they are a good revolver.
oh yea i researched it when we did the restoration, i know alot more know on how to properly do it too. For the next time because the next time is coming very soon on a different weapon

Some wood hardener to soak the grips in and some light sanding with a dapple of antique polish will make the grips look new in no time.
Edit: use a magnifying glass and look on the cylinder and if it has drag marks or engraving- like marks then it's real, it doesn't look like a model, but maybe a working show gun. Most western collectors used show guns but they are mostly decoration before non firing guns.

Good job young fellows. If you want to continue, buy some gunsmith screwdrivers, a set of brass and steel pin punches and some small brass hammers. That will help you a lot. Alos, try to not dry fire your firearms. Even if they will never fire again, dry firing damages the parts, especially with black power fitearms. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the video, it is interesting to watch. By the way, Uberti still makes the replica of the Remington cap and ball revolvers.

i'd make it into a conversion revolver. a cartridge cylinder and a new hammer and take the sail underneath(the sail being the ramrod) and putting a makeshift ejector rod. then also keep it in the nice case when you dont shoot it. also ive seen a few things on the grips. maybe boil the wooden grips,dry them, and then put wood hardener and also some water resistant oil.

yes we were new to it and you are one of the few people that took our lack of inexperience into consideration when blasting us haha, thanks for watching we are currently restoring three other guns now, a sawed off shotgun, Ruger 357 magnum blackhawk, and possibly a 1900's smith and wesson snub nose!

@@TheKinzlerBros After rewatching this again, I noticed you said the stamp on it says "Uberti". Uberti makes the finest reproduction old guns there is. The metal they use is much better grade and quality than even the originals, but they stay true to the original design. I own several Uberti's myself, including a Uberti 1873 Winchester. You are correct about it being made in '64. I believe that gun could even be fireable, as long as the bore is good, and it is possible to rebore the barrel it too if it needed it. There is a video on how to do that I think.

If that’s actually from 1863 those wood grips are more than 157 year old wood
The barrel and the grips are not original but, everything else is, someone replaced them at some point!
It's actually an 1858. They're still being made and you can get one for about $250 from Pietta. The 1863 is the .31 cal pocket and that's still being made too. A buddy of mine hung a rusty buffalo model with the 12" barrel and target sights. I hunt with mine they're very accurate even with the roundball.
@@TheKinzlerBros What makes you think the frame is original? I have an original frame/barrel, hand/hammer. The frame should have the serial number under the left grip plate near the bottom. There should also be some other stamps in that area.
@@jasonstewart3748 I did civil war reacting for years, my Remington was a .44 cal been digging civil war relics for over 30 years, so unless it was passed down by the family and then thrown in the water in the past 20 years, possibly 19th century. A remanufacturer more than likely, regardless an absolute epic find and a swell job guys in cleaning it up! Well done!,I'm sure you may have found modern guns in worse condition in the water.
@@rockymountainlifeprospecti4423 My 1858 is marked .44 but if you load it with .44 it'll chainfire. I load .454.

well they are not the original grips with the gun there is not way they would still be intact! i beieve they were changed along with the barrel!
If it was covered in mud, clay, or sand they would’ve survived to a degree.
that looks like a reproduction, so it probably isnt that old, you can still pick those up new from uberti

Its not a Colt its a Remington replica.
It's a remington, you can tell by the ease of removing the cylinder

The gun is a reproduction and is really a modern firearm so you need to soak it in oil and you should be able to shoot it.
David Stegman the barrel and grips are modern but the frame is original with numbers to match for the time period. But I am still scared to fire it.

Whilst as a machine gunner in the army . At the end of weeks out in the field or prolonged firing we used to go down shop and buy bottles and bottles of coke a cola . Fill up a bath a rest the gun in it for a couple hours before cleaning . Awesome .
