Wheeler. This video facinated me... I've now gone back and watched your other videos and am obsessed with the Passaic River, which I grew up near as a kid (Little Falls). Great stuff.
I now live in Lancaster Pa. but grew uo in Paterson in the early 1930's till 1988 when I moved to Pa. To think I viewed this site many times...and once dove in the chazum beneath the falls. Of course it was in the dry spell of the summer when no water was coming over the falls. It was creapy diving in that black deep water beneath the falls. I only dove in because of my older friend...threatening to throw me in. This Video brings back alot of memories.
Hey, I was born and raised in Paterson in the 90s. Not fun, but how was it in the 30s? Was it much nicer then with all the production being done there or is it just hype? Just wondering.
Thanks Wheeler, I live in AK now but I used to work these floods in Red Cross Disaster Unit, Passaic & East Orange Chapters. I know where you are going and appreciate the risk to bring us on the journey! Kudos & stay safe :)
I was in this educational summer program at Rutgers Newark and we went to this Hydro-Electricity dam (not sure of the name) and we got to hear stories of how bad the Passaic really was,the bus driver said he remembered when it was so bad that the river was like a red color, and there was practically no fish because of the pollution. It was a great lesson and i can tell how passionate you are about this river, so good look on your future journeys!!
In 1935, My Father ran for Passaic County Alderman. One of his five points was a promise to clean up the Passaic River. He lost. Wouldn't it have been nice if they started then?
Just read "Nightshade". Loved it. I grew up in Chatham NJ and spent the majority of my childhood along these banks. I also grew up with Jimmy "Mad Hatter" Madison and Terry Wells. Your description of the events surrounding that horrible tragedy are spot on. I also appreciate the photo on p. 77. My friends and I were the ones that shot the locks off of this and several other pump houses along this stretch. Evidently this area remains a "weapons free" zone. Keep your head down! Carry on. MOOSE.
Wow man, excellent style and subject matter. I've watched a few of your videos and so far, above all they've made me ponder what corners, shores, and infrastructure have existed around me in that unnoticeable periphery you're so keen to explore and document.
Man the hydrologic jumps and whirlpools are crazy. 1 slip and adios. I've always wanted to see the falls, and sense I live in NYC I have no excuse, but to see it so agitated is even better. Thanks for posting. PS, the guy on the bridge isn't only risking HIS life, but the life of the first responders tasked with "trying" to save him.
We used to hang out on the Garfield side under the Dundee Dam, or sometimes on Kiggi Island and party there back in the 70s and 80s. Is Kiggi Island still there? It was not so much an island but a sand bar that had a couple of trees and bushes on it. Even back then we all knew the water was polluted as all hell, but every once in a while, somebody (usually me) would take a drunken swim in it. Last time I did that, in 1989 I had sores over my whole body and lost all my body hair for an entire year. Something from the ink factories upriver in Paterson I heard. Despite the pollution, I remember there being a lot of wildlife, like cranes, ducks, and a huge 2-foot wide turtle we'd encounter every once in a while.
I live in Cedar Grove, you do such a great job on your videos. I really enjoy your videos also you have an excellent speaking voice. Keep up your adventurous talent

Stupendous effort. Thank you for hopping some fences and climbing out on that bridge to get better vantage points, depicts the true fury of nature.

Wow. You should be a documentary filmographer. This is really good, looks and sounds very professional.
