  • In todays video, I put our new re-built topper and the International Harvester 674 to the real test by topping a heavy forest of rushes. See how it gets on in this video.

    For 3 years i topped over 110 acres with a 674, this was on new land we bought, so we where short of money so all we can do is send the cattle out on it and mow the rushes up, i used a 674 and 6ft humac topper. It was the oerfect match, the ground, topper and 674, love that tractor so much, doors off, luckiky the front window frame was too rusted so i had plenty air con, just out in the many small fields topping away, regular servicing and keeping good oil and water in her. Such a great tractor for its time, love the neat tucked away gear selection, far better than the ford 5000 / 5600 equivalent. I used it on a link box in the winter. Its being restored at the minuet and getting the love she desrves, will still do jobs for many years, luckiky the ground was tidied and re seeded so no more weeks of topping. (No the ground want suitable for anything bigger, it was that rough)

    Topping in reverse is best won’t be leaving uncut rushes in the wheel tracks. Slow but you’ll have a nice clean job.

    There's a lot of heat off the transmission of them models of IH when they're working hard, can You take the doors of the cab to help air flow? A few years ago the BiL had some land like that with a forest of rushes, It was a dry September like this Year, We cut them with a disc mower left them on the ground to wilt for a few days and round baled them, then weed wiped the regrowth the following spring made a great job of the land.

      You can take the doors off, which I did in another field I had to top. We're hoping to spray them and hopefully the field will come out some what good.

    If there was a market for rushes, this time next year we'd be millionaires......😂😂

    Could you mole plough, plough and reseed this field next year after spraying with roundup. Apply lime, rectify the p and k indices as per soil samples that you can take now. Such a shame having the land just growing rushes and all the people crying out for extra grass

      My father did mention a few times about ploughing and re-seeding the field

    Lengthen the top link -prevents front digging in

    To be honest my MF 135 has cut lower than that . Those 674s are Great when at work .

    Use a Flail Topper that would make the tractor growl

    • @IrishFarmer
      @IrishFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      My father went through a 'trying to buy a flail topper' phase but backed out of if in fear our 674 wouldn't be fit for it.

      No , the 674 is perfect for it ,I ve seen these tractors working hard on silaging . It does them a bit of Engine good . But Flail everytime . I have on my MF135 .

    Any update on the cats eating

    • @IrishFarmer
      @IrishFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      The cat comes and go, you might see him one day and then you mightn't see him for 3 or 4 days. I'll incorporate it in a video with more explanation.

    Your going to fast and you need to keep the pto speed as high as possible and it will make a much better job but it will take longer than you think

    • @IrishFarmer
      @IrishFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, I know it will take longer and I wouldn't mind that if I had air conditioning or a fan. It gets really hot in the 674 when your topping. Theres a fan in the tractor but the fuse is blown and it's in the most awkward of places.

    • @johnmchardy4502

      Wait till a cold day or remove the doors on tractor as your overloading the drive train and not cutting much at all

  • @mikeclark4416
    @mikeclark4416 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your cutting too fast .2nd Low

    You could've made bales for bedding.get a few Highlands and use them to keep em down,❤️‍🩹your spot on about tractors, i get 90% of jobs done with ih 674 and db 990.

    • @IrishFarmer
      @IrishFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have never baled rushes, never even thought about using them as bedding. We always bought and used straw for bedding. Might consider baling rushes for bedding in the future. Thank you for your input.

    • @westcoast5934
      @westcoast5934 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IrishFarmer They're not as good as straw for bedding but they're ok, the only issue is some people claim that when they're spread back on the land the can reseed, I don't know if this is true but with the price of straw in the west it might be worth giving rushes a go.
