  • THIS VIDEO: Today I want to look at Robert Frank’s legacy - how the he and his book, The Americans changed photography and photographers forever. So much has been said and written about his work - making it difficult to talk about him without repeating the same information. His impact stretches beyond street photography, documentary and photojournalism. Those are the obvious genres that one thinks about when considering the influence made by the 83 images that make up his landmark publication. But it isn’t just the look and feel of his photographs that has been transformational. When he set out on his road trips across America he was staging an assault on the photographic conventions that governed the actual reason why photographs were produced. He discarded the neat, polished aesthetic of Eve Arnold, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon

A brilliant short but informative meander through Robert Franks influential project - The Americans - and the subsequent impact on some renowned photographers …… thoughtful and well produced - yet again!

Really puts everything in context! Phenomenal video, very educational. Without a doubt 20th century history of photography in America 🇺🇸 influenced the world of photography immensely. However I always wonder how the photographic medium developed in Europe and particularly in some of its parts like my native Ukraine or in Asia or African continent other parts of the world. There is very little research dedicated to alternative history of photography. There is not as much material on non-American photographers who influenced the art of photography (except some names like Bresson etc). We are yet to uncover many hidden names! Thanks for this wonderful video!!!

Hi Slava Yes, you are right, there are huge number of great non-American photographers who have in the past pushed the boundaries of photography - and who will probably never get the recognition that they deserve. I would love to do a parallel exhibition on what the rest of the world was doing while American photographers were becoming internationally well known. It is the whole system that the US had built to support and promote their artists that allowed this to happen. The whole world has benefited from their development in the arts , but it does sometimes appear as if great artists are only born in the states. In recent years the art system has been hijacked in the USA and Europe, so I feel that the true innovation is now happening in other countries.

You can peer under the rug of any country, or person, and find darkness, in some cases more and others less.
