    The XR2 Mk2 was a great car, the early versions 84-86 were noticeably faster than the later one's - something to do with emissions. I think you summed it up nicely, the XR2 had soul.

    I love and own a xr2. Even thou I haven't driven it for 5yrs to drive it now id feel a bit boy racer'ish .i prefer old fords as you don't see them much on the roads if you saw a old skool ford coming your way you'd look twice but if you saw a new ford you'd be board of seeing them as everyone has one.

    I did the scariest 360 spin on the motorway when I was just a 17 year old kid in an XR2.. the car in front of me did an emergency stop in the fast lane for no reason! and I just pulled the steering to the side as I didnt have time to slow down to miss him and the car spun around a full 360 and I held it and carried on going in the right direction without stopping.. saved my life. Had a Fiesta RS Turbo in black that I really loved after that.

    I liked this review. I also owned a Mk2 XR2 in my youth. I got mine into Car & Car Conversions around 1994. It had twin 40's on it, etc. Spent about £2,500 on it. Engine out, rebuild, top parts. It was quick for a Fezza and sounded awesome. Since that time, I've owned 2 Corvette's and a recent Mustang GT. Fast cars. But the most fun car I've ever owned is that Mk2 Fezza XR2. I'm considering buying this new ST. Hopefully within the next few months. It looks great, and good fun to me!

    I grew up with an XR2 brilliant car and would still take it over a modern car mine was silver mrk 2, I bought mine as a write off and repaired it over 2 years while I was a student in collage in the 90s, lol while everyone was out getting laid there was me working and doing up my pride and joy, great memories, also agree I love manual steering racks they are tops.

  • @RltchieI

    Did the 2013 ST pump the engine noise into the cabin via the sound system? I know the XR2 didn’t.

  • @Muszynian
    @Muszynian 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If You say it's like that, than this kind of engine swap suddenly makes a lot of sense to me. I think those old Fiestas actually drive really well, and being feather-light weight, they are very fast in the corners. With more power, I imagine they could be great fun, like hot hatches in general. Cheers.

    who's the girl driving the XR2 and in the passenger of the ST?

  • @rodpanhard
    @rodpanhard 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I should perhaps have made it clearer that most of the Fiestas I saw at the show were far from standard, very few just had a boggo 2.0 on standard injection,
    When the ST gets on a bit and it's engine starts to find it's way into the older Fiestas their weight advantage means that there's no way a lardy modern hot hatch will live with one. Don't underestimate how lightweight the older Fiestas are, a basic MK1 Fiesta was only 100 kg heavier than the original Austin Mini. Modern hatches are huge.

    You don't upset the cars balance at all, a silvertop 2l with a steel block and alloy head is only 6 kilos heavier than the all steel crossflow so the weight distribution remains the same. Modern all alloy engines are even lighter than the old all steel ones. You don't end up with a nose heavy car at all.

  • @rodpanhard
    @rodpanhard 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most MK1 and Mk2 Fiesta's these days have 2.0 engines out of a Focus in them and would leave a modern ST standing due to their light weight and no cat. I was at an old Fiesta show and 70% were zetec or zetec turbo.

  • @billyhilly4467
    @billyhilly4467 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would you compare them?

  • @bfcricky
    @bfcricky 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The old 2.0 Focus engines developed 170bhp (ST170) and 130bhp (rest of the range) and weren't turbo charged. The Fiesta ST develops 180bhp and 200bhp at overboost, with 240NM of torque at 1500 rpm, so your comment is a lie mate, low weight is good for cornering, but from a standing start, power will always have the upper hand, unless its something daft like an Ariel Atom obviously. Doing engine swaps won't help the car's depreciation rate either.

    XR2's need to be driven hard. I had only just started motorsport in the video I posted but I drove my road XR2 hard and it loved it. Cams could be changed in a few hours when they wore out and cost peanuts so no issue. I loved my XR2. People are spoilt with low end torque and driver aids these days. Closest thing to old hot hatches was the Clio 172 cup and even that's getting old now. No assistance, an N/A engine, low weight and a track or Suitable B road. Don't understand? Then you don't like cars and can't drive. New cars fast, capable and fun but in a totally different way.

    ST to heavy to much electrics to go wrong, interior is very nice but adding touch weight for sure! look how dark it is in the St wheels are to big put pepper pots on it or same size15s think they have 17 or 18s my friends 05 ST WRC is the 2.0l with bluefin chip n cams and still a bucket! lol my other friend races the xr2i at knockhill and we've built 2 on 3rd now, the smrc challenge is the 85 xr2i standard tuning vs the ST 1.6 standard but alot are cheating replacing the cylinders with ones out 1.3 or a 1.3 bottom end with a 1.6 head for more combustion and they kick the sts arse these ones! we race in the red xr2i but you notice tell light blue one with all this mods done to it just kicks everything's arse on the track!

  • @Muszynian

    I think that's a very childish, top-gear induced way of thinking. It's true that those old fiestas can go very fast, but in a straight line. Upsetting the cars balance by swapping a big, powerful and heavy engine only helps you go fast on the straights. And that's nice for someone who can't drive, yet tries hard to amaze other people with his "awesomeness". In my coutry a lot of people swap 2 litre motors (C20XE) into old Corsas. The acceleration is phenomenal, but that's about it.

    Thay didn't really test either car thay just drove round llandow circuit for a few laps and talked shit.
    YOU DON'T GO TO A TRACK AND DO A ROAD TEST FACT!!!
    You do a road test on the road and a track test on a track.
    Because a track is smooth and really sticky when compaired to a road so the car feels better than it ever will on the road.
