Fun fact: Pirates (and most anyone sailing the seas in ye olden days) did have bread. It was called hardtack and made with only flour and water (and maybe some fat like butter if you were lucky). Needless to say, it was extremely unpleasant to eat, but as long as it stayed dry it wouldn't spoil. Extra fun fun fact: Normally weevils and maggots would infest this hardtack. Because it was almost impossible to completely remove them, and definitely a waste of time, most sailors and pirates would eat it in the dark to try and not know what pieces were infested.
