- Shine On Brightly was influential in the development of progressive rock by breaking pop and rock music standards with the 17-minute epic "In Held 'Twas in I", which marked the beginning of the lengthy progressive rock suites that would occur later in the 1970s. The title of the epic "In Held 'Twas in I" is an acrostic, taking the first word from the first movement as well as the first word from a verse later in the movement as well as the first word from each of the three successive movements as shown:
In "Glimpses of Nirvana"
Held "Glimpses of Nirvana" (sixth verse)
′Twas "′Twas Teatime at the Circus"
In "In the Autumn of My Madness"
I "Look to Your Soul"
This is tremendous! Absolutely my favorite rock/prog song by a landslide, the original version with Trower. Nobody does it like Trower. I used to force my piano teacher to teach me this, along with Jon Lord stuff. He had perfect pitch so he figured it out instantly, me, not happening. Anyway congratulations, this is a stunning performance.
This gave me chills. god bless this man. The whole reason I got into piano in the first place was because of Procol Harum. If my skills were only good enough, I'd learn every single song if I could.
This demonstrates the brilliance of Gary Brooker as the composer. The moving bass lines defining the harmonic structure is very Bach-ian. Very nicely done demo - I am translating your lesson into guitar.
Even though we were alive and well in September 1968 when this album was released, I don't recall hearing it. We were 'into' a different genre(Stax/Motown) at the time. But thanks to this post, we went here 'on the tube' and listened to the complete 17 minute epic. Incredible musicianship, lyrics, arrangement, the total package. Thanks to idolhands50 for this one so we could, without being maudlin, reminisce back to the times when 'pop' music really meant something to the artist and listener.
Great song, thanks for the lesson !
This is awesome thanks! Any chance you could do another Procol song in the future? Dead Man’s Dream would be amazing
I never heard this before either, George. It sounds very nice. I'll have to check out the original epic, (as Spyder did). Regarding the acrostic, I wonder what drugs they were on!
+17drums They weren't on any drugs, they're just British~! LOL~!
Must be in the water of the Thames!
