Q of the Day: The stripes are very distracting for me as well. They’re off-center as you mentioned and too thin for my tastes. I think I would have been fine to stick with the Hasbro ML 20th Anniversary Cap and keep the $85 or whatever the Mafex version ended up costing me after shipping. I’m not ragging on the Mafex version so much as I’m simply getting tired of “upgrading”. Action figures are becoming like iPhones. There’s a new and better version every year. Sometimes you just need to be okay with not having the latest and greatest if what you do have is working fine for you.
So glad I picked this guy up. He’s such a great figure. Never liked any of the Hasbro Cap figures. I would prefer a more modern look but still this is the DEFINITIVE Captain America figure at this scale and I couldn’t be happier with it.
I find that when I get the Mafex version I never need another one. I still get more satisfaction from these at their price point compared to a Legends or McFarlane at theirs. That's just me though.
Facts. I've almost never been fully satisfied with a Legends. McFarlane can come very close every now and again, but for those few that do, they can usually be modded into near perfection.
FACTS!!! I decided a couple years back after getting some many great DC/Marvel figures from mafex that I was done wasting money on all those ML waves and trash Mcfarlane figures and just go 100% Mafex for all the main line most important characters.
I love that figure too. But after getting the Mafex in hand. It cant compare honestly. The look the sculpt/design and the articulation is awesome. The MS cant hit all the great Cap poses plus the MS scale is just not my cup of tea .
marvel select is too tall and that's all she wrote for me, everything and i mean everything i have is scaled to 6" (even if they're not ACTUALLY 1:12) so he'd stick out too much for my liking
There's a huge problem on this figure that once you realize it you might never touch it again... Almost all of the blue parts are painted and the plastic underneath is way brighter also the paint is not strong enough, mine has started scuffing up on the butterfly joint terribly and the shoulders and a lot of my friends are saying the same
I still dont understand why mafex does this just mold it in the most used color which is blue in this case and then mold other parts in other color. It makes it durable, customers dont nag on you and keep buying more from you. I personally didnt buy few of Mafex figures because of paint chip... its so insane its already a premium figure why cant we get premium quality.. Hasbro does it... why cant mafex ???
It's a nice release, though I'm pretty satisfied with my 20th anniversary Marvel Legends Cap. The recently revealed Secret Wars Cap might replace it, though.
'Most people are posing them." People I see online are not posing their figures. They just have them lined up on a shelf like that scene from i, Robot.
depends on the person and the timing. many of us have too many figures for all of them to be in dynamic poses all the time. often, the shelves are hero poses to save space but the figures still get posed when they arent on the shelf
I got mine in earlier this week, it’s definitely my favorite 6”-ish scale Cap. HOWEVER, both shoulders and hips got really tight on mine as I posed him, had to use silicone oil on the shoulder ball joints and hip ball joints now they move really well but still hold their position. But the left leg on mine also has a slight looseness on the drop down and the thigh swivel is very loose. The toe joint also sucks as you mentioned, it’s unusable unless you want to use a stand. I’m still happy I bought it because I’ve had fun posing him around. But man… I was expecting to like it so much more from the in hand pictures I’ve seen.
Excellent review! I think he's the best 6inch Cap figure hands down. The Mafex classic comic Iron Man is pretty good too. U should review him next. But they dropped the ball big time with Thor. I mean he looks okay but is way undersized IMO.
Just got this guy yesterday. The thing that sales me with this version over the Legends is the proportions. The big head, small chest, low shoulders, and skinny shins on the 20th Anniv. Legends version just does not look appealing to me. Mafex has a smaller head, bigger raised shoulders, wider chest, and better shaped legs. He still fairly long legged and a bit lanky, but this is based on an earlier Kirby era of Cap where he was a bit lanky. To me, the Mafex one feels more comic esque than the Legends version. It also helps that he can actually kick out to the side. Overall, I feel comfortable saying this is my definitive Captain America.
Honestly I like this Cap enough and I don’t have the 60th one but I refuse to pay the scalper prices on that one and just pay the extra 20-40 on this one
The red line not being down the center drove me so nuts I decided not to preorder. I know it’s comic-accurate to the silver age, but it just bothers me. If they make a modern Cap I’ll pick that one up.
Since I only collect 1/12 scale figures I mostly buy Marvel Legends for superhero figures. So far I honestly don't think that the Mafex price point is justified, especially as the articulation isn't the greatest as you point out here, and because I find the Mafex sculpts too slim and too soft. I only buy the Mafex DC figures since they're in the scale I want. All in all your review was complete and unbiased. Thanks!
Yeah those torso lines are too high. I don't like the face of the Marvel Legends one. If i am going for classic Captain America i might go Diamond Select. What i really need is modern Cap with the red combat boots, harnesss with pouches, and the wings being a design on the cowl.
Wicked solid looking, very Jack Kirby which is cool. I don't know if I will end up with it but yeah, the stripe layout is a little aggravating lol, I just don't like asymmetry. Great review!
The classic version is not for me. Hopefully they will do a more contemporary version. I was thinking on getting the Secret wars cap, but guess what, he only comes with a broken shield. I would say any cap should come with a standard unbroken shield. Personally, if I have to buy two ML to get a decent figure, ill better wait for a good Mafex, unfortunately this version is not for me, but maybe if I find a deal on it (like I did with the Thor figure).
i don't get why this figure is almost 60 in japan, it doesn't have enough quality to cost this much, we get mdlx for 80 bucks that quality wise blow this out of the water, we have 30 dollar figures that blow this out of the water speaking about details paint and sculpt and they're not legends, just to rectify somebody said that this is worse than the legends and uhmmmmm that's really not true
A good review, as always, my only issue is that you don't mind this cap mold is somewhat slender, and you call it the Mafex "style", but when it comes to Marvel Legends you want the figures to look as muscular as possible, otherwise you say they seem to be regular people wearing a costume. My question is...why is slenderness a matter of style with import figures but it is a mistake in a Marvel Legends figure? It would be nice if you could define your criteria, clarify that thin blurred line that separates good proportions from bad proportions in action figures based on comic book superheroes. I'm just curious cause I just don't think it's a double standards situation. I'm not trying to be annoying or cocky, as I said before it's pure curiosity. Cheers!
Mafex has a toned, yet thin stylized look to their figures. Mafex figures are known for being slender, and that's consistent across all their figures, so you can tell it's deliberately. The slenderness is a design choice, and it's up to the consumer to decide if they want that in their collection. Like how NECA prioritizes sculpt, paint, and accessories over articulation, that's their style. Their articulation is usually solid, but NECA fans buy them for their aesthetics. Marvel Legends doesn't have any distinctive style, they just look like disproportionate humans. Their bodies don't have the correct proportions, like there's no v-taper, lower legs are too long, big hip gap, low shoulder, narrow chests, big heads, strangely sculpted muscles. Big heads and wide hips are not an artistic style, it's just wrong.
The promo images put me off on the heads but I like them enough in person. I just opened mine yesterday and I really liked it until you pointed out that the stripes aren’t centered. Now it’s going in the garbage.
He looks ok...I can't deal with the stripes..,.I know it's classic but .....I'll keep my ML anniversary Cap for now....not gonna pay Mafex prices....especially where I am.....for this one
what biases against mafex? you guys projecting things on to other people is getting ridiculous. a 9/10 for a figure with screwed up paint and bad hips and toes? but giving it an 8 is My biases... ok.
@@AnthonysCustoms perhaps the paint was just a manufacturing goof up. My paint is fine. You just sounded unimpressed throughout the whole review 😂.. hey Anthony I still love you man. Keep up the good work 👍
I will never understand people's attraction to this brand. For the amount of money they usually sell for, these figures look like crap. The comparison shot, next to the recent Select says everything. But hey, it's your money folks, do whatever you want.
This review felt forced, almost feels like you did this review to say it was bad because you like a ML, MS, or DS Version of it. Maybe you have a review out now im not sure will check it after. I think I would have respected this review more if you just said how you truly felt. I'm not the biggest Mafex fan. I think they have a lot they need to work on for the price they charge. Mafex isn't even my top 3.
That might be the most projection I've ever heard. "I don't know anything about you so let me make up a bunch of stuff and argue about it. I won't take what you're saying at face value because then I can't have something to complain about on the internet."
Watch a few of his other videos, but different brands of figures (MAFEX, Legends, Select or McFarlane). Then you can draw a conclusion. In his reviews, he remains neutral about 95% of the time and does not show any favoritism.

Well you honestly have never watched him before since he pretty much trashes hasbro regularly . Must be a mafex stan

Agreed
Same goes for the Daredevil.
Absolutely not
@@cookedityes I was hesitant and both of these I just did a review on the DD on my channel now I’m waiting on captain America
When I look at those terrible head sculpts, I think they look worse in-hand.

For sure. My phone is old as heck. No need to keep up with the Joneses so to speak
I think he looks pretty good slim maybe but definitely not too skinny he looks proportional to venom and superman so that's good enough for me

Yeah the Hasbro Captain America figures are trash. Mafex is my definitive Cap too followed by the Marvel Select.
As a captain america expert, his chest is WAY too high and the mid section with stripes is WAY too tall.
I find that when I get the Mafex version I never need another one. I still get more satisfaction from these at their price point compared to a Legends or McFarlane at theirs. That's just me though.

This is my definitive Cap, but I like the more retro designs for the Avengers. He looks great on the shelf with their retro Iron Man and Thor
The 20th anniversary marvel legends cap still looks better to ME . Especially the scale armor is more pronounced
DAng, why did Anthony have to point out the misaligned red stripes...
My OCD is stopping for buying it. I can't unsee that.
Prefer the Marvel Select. $30 for 3 heads, 2 shields, and different hand options

It's a nice release, though I'm pretty satisfied with my 20th anniversary Marvel Legends Cap. The recently revealed Secret Wars Cap might replace it, though.
Seeing this next to marvel legends made me realize how large the heads hasbro uses on their figures

The off-center stripes on the stomach is from the very old captain america designs. When comics were 25 cents in the 70s.
Right

I am not crazy about the off center stripes either but i actually like the thinness and them being a bit higher up than usual
Too slim to be the 80s or archetypal Cap, yet simultaneously also too muscular in places to be the 60s/70s Cap. Such a strange build.
Might go with the new Mezco one coming out.
The smaller lines look much better in comic form and not distracting. It doesnt look like it translates to a figure well.

are you just making the case for statues? it has nothing to do with imports vs domestic figures. more range requires more joint.
