    Basil Poledouris wrote one of the best soundtracks in movie history for Conan The Barbarian (my favorite movie for this block). Swamp Thing should be remade with the technology that's available for superhero movies today.

    Gotta go with Conan. One of those films that I have to sit down ABs watch whenever it’s on. Made so many careers as well as really pushing out the fantasy genre alongside D&D. Lovely film

    Conan is also a prime example of a pretty much perfect score. The score is such a perfect fit to the movie and the action, that you can tell what's happening just by listening to the music. You normally only notice a score if it's bad, but this is one of those times where you notice because it's so good.

    I like that the Spielberg "Night Skies" project was spun off into both E.T. and Poltergeist, with the idea of the family being terrorized switching from Aliens to Ghosts. Also, I want to mention, as it was brought up briefly, the soundtrack for "O, Lucky Man" is fantastic. I think I like it more than the actual movie. The soundtrack was by Alan Price.

    Conan is one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it way too young, way too many times, Crom only knows how much it impacted my development.
    I think '82 may be the best year for scifi movies ever, thanks to Wrath of Khan E.T., and later Blade Runner and The Thing. I never thoughtTron was great, but it's certainly important. And I have a fondness for Firefox (a Soviet hypersonic stealth jet in '82 is definitely scifi)
    I've never seen Battletruck, but I want to.
    Oh, and don't be afraid to do Star Trek. As Spock famously said, fear is the mind killer.

    ...Or there wasn't an uproar about the gender swap in Swamp Thing because Swamp Thing's supporting characters aren't well-known and there was no internet? How many people knew Agent J in Men in Black was originally white? If people don't know the source material, they won't care about the source material.
    Matthew Cable isn't exactly up there with Taskmaster or Mar-Vell (Captain Marvel).

    • @HeyImRosko

      And it was not a major studio film basing all of its press releases on the fact that its quality was due to a woman taking the role.
      It was probably more of a case of the adaptation merging side characters, as was the fashion at the time.
      I never even knew she was meant to be Matt Cable.
      It rankles me that our guy still feels the need to take sides with "culture war" snipes, especially right at the start of a video, and especially especially since it won't be long before this IP ruining mindset finally runs its course.
      A channel like this really doesn't need it, and it only weakens an otherwise great project

    • @movietimelines
      @movietimelines  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      because it’s not a war. it’s film casting. it’s really not that big a deal.
      my issue is with the people i call out in this video. those that get shocked and offended by film casting and turn it into some sort of huge battle, instead of a bunch of studio accountants saying “this will make the film more money.”
      i see casting i dont’ agree with and say “eh. I’m not crazy about that” and move on.
      the one last thing I’ll point out is that the vast general public doesn’t know a good deal of these characters. you say that you never knew that she was meant to be matt cable, because you likely weren’t a swamp thing fan at the time. 98% of the population has no clue who taskmaster or mar-vell is either.
      why can’t it be so simple as you saying “well this is the fashion of this time, much like merging side characters was at that time”? either way it leads to different interpretations of characters.

      @@movietimelines I guess my point is that call-outs like that don't help and are unnecessary in your otherwise great project.
      Enjoying a retrospective of all these films can and should have an appeal to all people, dragging current year issues into it only ensures a loss of potential channel viewers who feel (correctly or not) strongly about those things, resulting in "making you less money".
      Absolutely run your channel as you see fit, but this particular entry came off as virtue signaling to one side vs t'other, and honestly seems contrary to the general personality of your work.

    • @movietimelines
      @movietimelines  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@HeyImRosko i mean, i felt it was necessary because it was funny, and i make jokes in the videos. Lots of jokes. This was one of them. And why does it have to be virtue signaling? Especially when it’s something i believe. I believe that the people who get all offended over gender swaps in media are too reactionary and over sensitive. And if they want to not follow this channel over that, then that’s fine, but they’re literally just proving my point.
      It’s movies. It’s really not something to take that seriously. And it was one sentence in a 35 minute video. If that’s all it takes to diminish someone’s appreciation of a work, then i don’t know what to say.

    In the E.T. novelization, Elliot uses M&M's, because the product was denied at the last minute.
    In another bit of food related trivia: in Spielberg's other 1982 hit movie POLTERGEIST, there's an abrupt cut during the kitchen scene. At one point Steven says: "I hate Pizza Hut," referencing Diana's suggestion of going there for dinner. Pizza Hut demand the line to be cut, they didn't want their restaurant to be referenced so negatively. With few options, they simply cut the scene short.
    The line (I hate Pizza Hut! I hate surprises! and I don't understand what the hell is going on around here!) is still in the Novelization.

    It wasn't that we cared or didn't care about gender swaps... when you make the gender swap the crux of the film, as is often done today, that is when it becomes an issue.

    • @movietimelines
      @movietimelines  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      i don’t really think that modern movie DO make the gender swap the crux of the movie, as much as certain online sites that generate clicks through outrage MAKE it the crux by being the only thing they talk about.
      I’m also not sure how a movie that swaps the gender of the character for the specific reason of making them the romantic interest for the hero ISN’T making it the crux of the film.

      Why can’t Hollywood just make good movies with new ideas and brand new characters. I know it’s crazy but would completely satisfy both sides of the argument

    • @macheesmo3
      @macheesmo3 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@movietimelinesbullshit. The entire point of modern movies is pushing "the message" and shitting on male characters. Stop blaming fans. Fans liked Cable, liked Ripley and liked any female action character that was written well. These new characters are amusing , self insertion fantasy dreaming by bad writers hired to meet quotas rather than for skill. The box office speaks for itself.

    • @movietimelines
      @movietimelines  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      i disagree. the "message" of hollywood is making money. and i don't blame fans, i blame online personas who get a ton of views by making videos complaining about the "M-She-U" and pretending like things now are any different than they've been in the industry for the past 100 years. swamp thing is just one example of it in the past.
      and in terms of box office : the modern movies seem to do quite well. for as much hate as Ghostbusters 2016 got, it was actually profitable. the first Captain Marvel movie gave us a female version of Mar-Vell and that movie made over a billion dollars. people complain about Taskmaster in Black Widow, but that movie was still profitable, even with being released in the heart of the pandemic. sure, there's flops in there as well, but to pretend that it's consistently led to poor box office isn't reality.

    • @macheesmo3
      @macheesmo3 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@movietimelines that's a lot of cope. Look at the downward spiral. Capt Marvel was seen as being necessary for the story of the first run of marvel. Since then, bomb, bomb, bomb...etc. look at Star Wars, it's been damaged as a brand so badly it might never come back. Less said about Indiana Jones the better....
      You may not like these internet personalities you refer to, but they are popular because they speak to a huge part of the genre audience. Their point of view is just as , if not more, valid than the opposition. I'm 50, I've seen this develop over many years and it's gotten ridiculous.
      You say Hollywood is about money, boy they've sure gotten bad at making it in this country.

    Wrath of Khan was certainly entertaining but it lacked the depth and imagination of The Motion Picture. The first film was produced in that period coming out of the counterculture era that produced the original series, and has that era’s more transcendent and exploratory vibe to it (though it’s not without its flaws). The second film was a product of the reactionary, action-driven 80s. Still Khan had more intelligence than the adolescent reboot movies of the 2010s.

    A lot of myths about the et game were espoused.
    First, ET is not a bad game. Not even close. Disappointing, sure, but I can point to dozens, maybe hundreds of worse games.
    Secondly, it didn't cause the crash. There was a glut of games at the time, mostly by manufacturers in it for a quick buck - Quaker Oats even had a video game division!
    Third, while there were indeed copies of ET in the landfill, the dump had copies of pretty much anything hardware and software related from Atari. Not just ET.
