I am a christian pastor, and I just want to say it's awesome that believers and non believers can enjoy great music like DH. And that great bands like DH are making their way into the "mainstream" and "secular" industries more and more now days. Because no matter what you believe, the music is always uplifting and encouraging. And for the fans who are unbelievers, it's never too late and you are very much LOVED. This is a Christian Metal band. The Almighty Father has blessed us with this band. They've helped so many with their trials and tribulations. I've been listening to them since 2012 and I'm still here. I'm not ready to die.
You don't have to be a devoted christian to realize that this is a damn good song. Don't get hung up on the implications so much. Music is music, take it in and enjoy the moment.

Besides the music, obviously, the thing I love about DH is that the lyrics are always written with meaning, there's always something in their songs to think about/reflect on and apply to my own life. In the case of this song, standing firm in your faith (or whatever your convictions are) even when what you believe isn't popular.
I take this in two ways. "Better I'm the last one alive than a soul denied". Could be either "I want to make sure everyone else makes it first" or "I don't want to be denied, so I'd rather be last". I like the former rather than the latter.

This song is beautiful. The message in it, the music in it. Demon Hunter never fails to bring the best. I can relate to this song so much especially with being a Christian. You feel alot like the world is against you and sometimes that may make you feel alone, but all your hope, faith and trust in Christ is worth it all. The Christian Rock industry truly has grown to have some of the greatest talent the world has ever known. I love "Extremist" it is in my opinion the GREATEST Christian Rock album since Casting Crowns dropped "Until The Whole World Hears" or Thousand Foot Krutch's classic offering "Welcome to The Masquerade". I love "The Heart of A Graveyard" and "The Last One Alive"; both songs of which would be perfect in episodes of "Supernatural" or even NBC's "Revolution". This year's other great Christian Rock album is Switchfoot's "Fading West" with "Love Alone Is Worth The Fight".

I mean, back in the 90's we had Petra and Whiteheart and Stryper, but then we got Mortification and Tourniquet and Deliverance, but they were only so-so when the secular music industry was exploding with awesome talent. Metal is not about what is in the lyrics, it is the way the music is put together and sounds. It is the heaviness of the guitars and drums and sometimes the vocals all rolled into one. Metal gets it's roots primarily in classical music. The sad thing is there are a lot of people out there who believe metal is all about war and death and hate when it doesn't have to be. Metal is so much more. Placing metal in a singular category like that is basically stereotyping the music and limiting how diverse metal can be. I like Demon Hunter and I consider them a Christian Metal band.

Just started listening to Demon Hunter this morning. Been working my way through all the albums, and I haven't found a song that I dislike. How did I go so long without this band's music? I can't wait until I have the songs memorized and can sing/attempt to growl along!
I've been saying this since the beginning! Summer of Darkness was my first album (it's their second album...then I went back and got their first album), and they have just gotten better every single time! Their songs are timeless, too, so none of their albums lose any impact. I've not found many bands that can do this. I LOVE this group!
I've seen these guys live a few times and have met them almost each time. Great guys and better music. I've been a fan of them since I was just a kid, and I really dig this song.
From a Christian perspective, I think this song is talking about the world and how hard it is for Christians to live the lives that we should...Its about how soo many have fallen away and lost their faith...But Ryan is saying that its better that he stay alive and cling unto what he believes, because he has a hope that theres more than all of this...This world is only for now...That we have a hope in Christ, and if we Hold on to Him with everything we have and believe in Him, when we will go to a place where there would be no more hurt, or pain, or suffering and that place is with Christ Himself...We won't be souls denied...and even if we don't die...We can be taken up (ascend) when Jesus comes back for us who believe in Him (the rapture).

I'm really liking the sound of this and Artificial Light. It's a good throwback to their Summer Of Darkness album which was my second favorite from this band. The Triptych holds a special place in my heart, though.

“The Last One Alive” is the first anthemic track that begins another thread weaved through the album of asking if “I’m the only one still standing in this extreme faith/trust/hope.” The song begins by asking, “Does anyone still try? Does anyone still hope to set their eyes beyond this place where angels fall and darkness reigns, where time dissolves the brightest flames?” The song brings a heavy charge against a world who allows the troubles and times to choke the light from their midst. However, it also offers a hope in/through/for the remnant as it proclaims “this is where we find the only hope within this place…” This song also features another great guitar spot that will keep purists in awe.
Compleeeeetely off-topic, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people only hear one particular line of the song and automatically assume "This would be PERFECT for (Insert series they like here) just because of the words "Last One Alive". Yes, it's a good song, and yes, that's the title, but the meaning of the song will often have absolutely nothing to do with what people think it fits. In fact, sometimes it's the opposite. Not just this song either, it's all too common with pretty much every song these days. Rant over, enjoy the music.
i have met these guys and they are christions and every one knows that.there music may not be positive all the time but what matters is whether they are saved, and they are, because their ideas on Christianity is great.they are great
This one is softer, but DH is amazing enough to rock your socks off in track one and sing you into a peacful calm in track 2. I pray these guys continue to grow in their faith, and don't cheat their fans like As I Lay Dying did.
Keller Martin The lead singer came out about not being christian anymore, but they continued to write and sell albums to that population. After he started a side band, people confronted him about be "a satanist" and all he could say was "no, I'm not." Then he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for attempted murder and conspiracy on his wife. Crazy stuff.

Madi Rae As I Lay Dying was one of my favorite metal bands. And then the whole murder conspiracy thing came out and I was like, "oh man." But I was interested and followed the stories intently. Then I came across the news story of Tim Lambesis's email to his wife renouncing his faith and I lost all interest in the band. It saddened me that someone would do that.

One of their best songs in my opinion. The structure of the song is well put together.

What is crazy is that each of their albums get better and better when you think it's not possible.
I've been saying this since the beginning! Summer of Darkness was my first album (it's their second album...then I went back and got their first album), and they have just gotten better every single time! Their songs are timeless, too, so none of their albums lose any impact. I've not found many bands that can do this. I LOVE this group!

From a Christian perspective, I think this song is talking about the world and how hard it is for Christians to live the lives that we should...Its about how soo many have fallen away and lost their faith...But Ryan is saying that its better that he stay alive and cling unto what he believes, because he has a hope that theres more than all of this...This world is only for now...That we have a hope in Christ, and if we Hold on to Him with everything we have and believe in Him, when we will go to a place where there would be no more hurt, or pain, or suffering and that place is with Christ Himself...We won't be souls denied...and even if we don't die...We can be taken up (ascend) when Jesus comes back for us who believe in Him (the rapture).

Compleeeeetely off-topic, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people only hear one particular line of the song and automatically assume "This would be PERFECT for (Insert series they like here) just because of the words "Last One Alive". Yes, it's a good song, and yes, that's the title, but the meaning of the song will often have absolutely nothing to do with what people think it fits. In fact, sometimes it's the opposite.

After he started a side band, people confronted him about be "a satanist" and all he could say was "no, I'm not." Then he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for attempted murder and conspiracy on his wife. Crazy stuff.

As I Lay Dying was one of my favorite metal bands. And then the whole murder conspiracy thing came out and I was like, "oh man." But I was interested and followed the stories intently. Then I came across the news story of Tim Lambesis's email to his wife renouncing his faith and I lost all interest in the band. It saddened me that someone would do that.

I don't care what anyone says, Demon Hunter is amazing. They may have mellowed in some ways over the years, but they have never let me down. This is worship music at its core.
For some reason this makes me think of being a firefighter on 9/11 and being buried underneath rubble where the World Trade Center came down, and I'm the only known survivor . A "place where darkness reigns and fire appears beneath"
