Making my own Kuretake Gansai Tambi muted colours palette (based on the Art Nouveau set)

- As the Kuretake Gansai Tambi Art Nouveau set seemed to be unavailable pretty much everywhere in December/January - especially here in the UK - I decided to buy individual pans of gansai paints and put together my own set of muted colours! I ordered mine from www.buddlycrafts.com (not an affiliate link!). I chose quite a few of the paints found in the Art Nouveau set, left out some of the colours that didn't appeal to me as much, and added a few of my own. In this video I'll swatch them all, and I'll show you the repurposed tin I'm using as a palette to store them in.

The mars yellow reminds me my favourite Chinese Orange from Sennelier. Beautiful colour.
I've been eyeing the art nouveau set for a while now, it does have some beautiful colors. I think it'd be so cool to see you collaborate with a paint maker to make a curated paint set. I'm sure there's a lot of work that goes into something like that, but I'm also sure it would sell out super quick. You have a good instinct when it comes to colors and how they work with each other. Anywho, I really appreciate your work, thank you for the lovely videos. They're so calm, helping me to get through a very difficult pregnancy this winter. So glad to see you have this set,and it's a really inspired idea to create your own version of the Art Nouveau set,the colours in it are definitly "Natasha Colours for sure. It is still impossible to order the set fom anywhere in the UK. You can get them on Amazon USA and from Kuretakre's own web site, but shipping costs from these sites makes the set too expensive. But I also use Buddly crafts myself to buy these paints as they are one of the very few UK sites that sell the pans individually. So I did the same and purcased all 24 colours from them to create my version of the orginal set. I love the Gansai paints and they are prefect for mixed media work,and are partculalry good with coloured pencils. I love the colours you added. The whole palette of colours you have put together could work for different seasons in your lanscape paintings and for your night landsdcape paintings too. I think because it was the first time Kuretake had released totally new colours for a while,so everybody rushed to get them and the set became very popular very quickly and sold out. I did get all 24 of the colours in the set and added some additional colours as well. Your pebble swatching definitly shows of the colours so well as well. Patty- I have quite a collection of the gansai paints. I really love working with them. I purchased the Art Nouveau set as soon as I saw them on TH-cam not knowing that it would be difficult to obtain them. Love those pebbles.

you can also make the sets that "Choosing Keeping" out of England. They have 4 sets based on decades that I realized would be much cheaper if you bought the individual pans from Kuretake. simply put its all about branding. Consider using "glue dots" to stabilize the individual pans.

I LOVE muted colors! The ones you chose are gorgeous! Shadow green is one of my favorites and Potter's Pink is the best!
I’m doing a no art supply buy this month and I’ve challenged myself to use the many watercolors I have. Love these colors. I have the pastel and big original set. You’ve inspired me to get out my sets and create my own set.
After it dries, you can rub a spoon on the graphite colors for sheen.
Loved this video. I had the sets and I added Mauve Taupe to my palette like the one you did. I love muted colors as well.

PS, I live in a freezing c17th cottage, and can highly recommend the kind of electric blanket you spread across your lap like a Nan. I don't know how I'd have managed without mine given the horrendous energy prices we've all had forced on us. Heating a large villa can't be easy...
I've had this set on back order ever since a local shop stocked it and it was sold out immediately in November. I JUST received my set yesterday and I can't wait to swatch it. I totally considered multiple times to import it from somewhere no matter the costs, but the wait has paid off😂 . I can totally imagine creating your own version of it with single pans! Great idea and beautiful colors!

I've made it through the first month of my no buy year, and the art nouveau set is haunting me already!! I couldn't get it last year, but it's available this year around here. That's ok, I have so many other supplies I haven't even touched yet, including a different set of the kuretake gansai tambi. I do love the idea of curating your own set. Maybe next year!

I love the idea of pulling together you own pallet. I transferred my small Kuretake Gansai set to a Prismacolor colored pencil tin. Then I primed the tin with ground and painted swatches of the colors on top. I love the box they come in but I don't read Japanese!
I bought a set of the graphites from them, about 2 years ago. I love them, also!❤

Patty-I have most of those colors. The only ones I don't have are the ones from Choosing Keeping. I love these paints. I'm not a professional, so I don't have special work to guide me through different color pallettes. I'm still trying to find my style. I'm glad you love the colors in your selections. The pebbles are gorgeous. Great Adventure!
Lucky you! I also couldn’t get my hands on the Art Nouveau set and so ordered the whole set individually from Buddley plus another handful or 2 of gorgeous colors, but it never arrived, 2 months later, i had to request a refund. Disappointed, i found the art nouveau on Amazon! Yay! The stars aligned! Sometimes they do! I love your collection, and your pebbles!!
I have used this tin for pallete, I have used double sided tape 3M (the black ) but you can use a magnetic sheet to stick them, I am currently making an empty tin of 72 pencils into a 60 full pan/120 half pan pallete but with a wood base to strengthen the tin, they are a bit flexy.

as soon as I saw the Billiard Green at the beginning of the video, I thought, "oh, that one is a NO." I didn't even see the other colours because that one was just offended me (haha). I wanted the Art Nouveau set (I’m in the US) and finally took the plunge and got through the Kuretake Japan website. It has yet to arrive, but I’m thrilled you’re swatching some of the colors in the set.

I fell in love with the Graphite Color set, so I bought a 6.00 jar of Gamblin mars black powder pigment and mixed it in with my tube colors and they are so beautiful! -With the added benefit of them now being wonderfully granulating. I have so much fun playing with them! ❤

I wouldn’t want all of these colours but I think there are some really beautiful colours, I love the Mars yellow and the darker greens and blues and that gorgeous dark red, I forget what it was called! I have a small gansai box of primaries and a gold, I might swap those out and use the box, as I have another plan for them anyway. I will keep the gold it is lovely, the box is really pretty though. Loved your paint out, some of those colours look so beautiful and rich. It is a good idea to choose your own, my main set of gansai colours has a lot of reds and yellows far more than I will use.
I am so intrigued by these paints and recently bought a set of graphite ones, there are 6 in the set. I haven't swatched them yet but will soon :) I had no idea I could get these paints open stock, this might be dangerous knowledge for my bank account lol. thank you for sharing.

Lovely video! I've just ordered the 48 set, but there are some colours in it that I know I'll never use (metallics and some garish greens), so I've bought some of the ones mentioned here to swap them out them out with 😊

I myself love the colors! The one that caught my attention here is the potters pink. I’ve been hunting for a creamy smoother version of potters pink and it’s been hard to find anything like that, so seeing the three pinks in this set really caught my eye the moment I heard of them!

I bought the Kuretake set of graphite watercolor from Jetpens and I love them. There are a total of six as far as I know (that's what came in my set). They are wonderful to paint with.

I've got the graphite set in my wishlist - apparently if you burnish or "polish" them with the back of a spoon once they dry, THEN you can see the graphite lustre.
This is so interesting - I like that they can be smoky and matte or shiny and graphite-y!
I have the graphite set and you burnish them when they are dry to get the sheen. Beautiful colours!

I loved the colors this set, but struggle working with watercolors. So I thought I might sift through my acryla gouache/turner paints and use these colors as inspiration for a color palette😄

I want to let you know that the Alizarin Crimson is not a bright red. In fact, it is very muted. Like a muted wine color. The Mauve Taupe is really nice too.
The are six graphite colors in all. The four you don't have are: 240 yellow, 230 red, 261 Violet, and 270 brown. They're all beautiful.❤️

Natasha, I looked up the graphite colors on my local art supply store Blicks. They say you can polish to reveal a metallic shine! 😮 “This set includes six colors that dry to a matte, smoky, graphite-like finish. Once completely dry, they can be lightly polished to reveal a metallic shine. Colors include Graphite Red, Graphite Yellow, Graphite Green, Graphite Blue, Graphite Violet, and Graphite Brown.”
Ooh, interesting! I'll have to give that a go and see. I do love the smoky matte look too though. :)

Kuretaki has a 6 color graphite set. In the information for this set, it says, "When polished gently, ink reveals a metallic sheen resembling traditional graphite." Now I'm curious! I was fortunate to get the Kuretake Art Nouveau set a few months ago....lovely colors. As always, I enjoyed your video.

The second set of this particular set came out and I absolutely adore the colours. I found it on Amazon. I did not get number 1 of this Art Nouveau set and it does not appear to be available anywhere. Has anyone out there seen set I?
What a brilliant idea to make up your own set of art nouveau colours. I would be interested to know where you got the Lyra metal box without the picture on the front. I have tried and could only find them with a printed picture which couldn’t be removed. Many thanks June Poole (in UK)

She’s using the Betty Hayways brushes. The Chelsea Paper Company sells them.
Doriana is right - they're the Betty Hayways brushes. One of my favourites for watercolour! :) The paper is a block of Etchr watercolour paper that they sent to me to try. I quite like it but tend to use it for swatching as I'm not overly impressed.
They look like jelly beans more than pebbles because of the soft pastel colors
