Proper 4x4s: Land Rover Defender vs Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Shogun

  • Driving brought together the Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Shogun to see if either can replace the outgoing Land Rover Defender as proper 4x4 king of the hill.
    Our testing ground was the Mud Master off-road driving course, at Brands Hatch; littered with ruts, hills, moguls and water wades, this is the sort of place that would have a Nissan Qashqai driver breaking out in a cold sweat.

    Sorry guys This contest is not fair and very biased, the Pajero are not in offroad tires and it is also NOT ON STOCK RIM AND TIRES ALSO, look at the Rims very different from the real rims, just "googling" the 2015 pajero and the wheels are very different.. Also get A guy who know Mitsubishi car very well to drive it just like mitsu's senior mechanics or Stephane Peterhansel or rally drivers. Mitsubishi had great champions history in racing like in "Dakar Rally" and "World Rally championship". And manufacturer like toyota,ford,land rover until now(2015), can only just dreaming that they wanted to achieved like Mitsubishi did in Dakar and WRC. Mitsubishi are very underrated from other fanboys. But In fact i had drive and also become passanger in the Pajero Sport(montero sport) 2013 for long journey and i'm feel comfortable in the seats ,my body feels not too tired in long journey, much better than in the honda CR -V and toyota Fortuner. And the car's power & torque are great enough in the motorway/toll road and climbing/ hill roads, & Fun to drive also quite nimble & stable on the road.. I Like Mtisubishi.

      +Big Brother Very well said. In 80's and 90's Mitsubishi was the most respected off road manufacter and Pajero was one the most well-succeeded and reliable 4x4. This guys are just too stupid to make a test like this.
      I own a 1992 Pajero (L144 Portuguese full-extras version called VIP that was manufactured in Portugal) and it still runs until today with full origin stock and 344k km's. It's also very confortable with his suspension full leather seats and has a very advanced suspension for his own time (front independent). When you drive it, you just have the sensation that you are driving a rally dakar machine and feeling all the that the Dakar pilots had in the golden era of Mitsu!
      One of the biggest and most famous specialist in Mitsubishi Pajero is the off road and rally driver Hiroshi Masuoka who have won a Dakar, find some videos of him here in youtube!
      Let the haters talk.

      +Carlos Amaral and this test is biased clearly .. Because we all know the Prado is certainly the most comfortable ,toughest ,biggest ,roughest ,meanest 4x4 in here with all the luxury and premium build quality and gadgets to match .. And it should certainly not be put up against a "Pajero" which has the same off road ability as a lifted RAV 4.

In fact, it is probably the most unsafe 4x4 currently on sale. No panels line up correctly, it leaks, the build quality is disgraceful. The absolute deadshits that believe this makes it a good 4x4 because of it's "simple design" need professional help. It is a bucket of shit.

Also I wouldn't call this 4 wheeling, you can see a town in the background 4 wheeling should be miles from anywhere except maybe a campground. Also the Mitsubishi didn't really have a fair go. Of course all terrains aren't going to work in mud, they will run in to a racing slick.

    @BelloBudo007 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Well that test didn't quite go as expected.
    A coupe of things. 1. It's such a shame that the Mitsubishi Shogan, known as Pajero here in Australia, wasn't shod with the same tyres as the other 2 vehicles. Having owned a Pajero with 2" lift and good off road tyres, I can tell you that it was damn good on road, in mud, on sand and for towing a camper trailer. Great warranty too.
    2. The Landcruiser with that flash air lift system must surely be top of the range?
    3. Land Rovers are amazing. I've owned and loved them. Unfortunately they haven't loved me back. Maybe in the UK it's a different story, but here in Oz Land Rover is thought of as unreliable and expensive to repair. This is also my experience on two LR that I owned.
    I'm sorry to see the Defender coming to it's end. As a former owner, I could not understand why Land Rover could not improve on the Defender and keep it in the market. It's got great heritage but someone somewhere failed to keep up with the times.

    • @spiritusmentis
      @spiritusmentis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Bill Blinky It's not just in Oz. Here in the US, Land Rovers are also famous for being unreliable. You can get a 5 year old top of the line Range Rover for the same price as a 5 year old Subaru, that's how much they depreciate. On the other hand, Toyota trucks & SUVs keep their value. Some FJ Cruisers are selling at around 90% of new prices lately. It's hard to beat the Japanese when it comes to reliability.

    • @BelloBudo007
      @BelloBudo007 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +spiritusmentis That's interesting as it says much about a car that has failed to live up to it's potential. Here in Australia Subaru has a wonderful name and is quite popular as a city and country vehicle where serious 4x4 isn't as important as reliability and that nice all wheel system that Subs are loved for.

    • @spiritusmentis
      @spiritusmentis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bill Blinky I'm sure LR was the king at some point in history, but I don't think that's the case anymore. Most rich people simply don't go off road, because it's a dangerous activity. LR can sell more luxury-livingrooms-on-wheels than a true offroad vehicle, so they keep on adding luxury bloat and complex electronics to their models (which in turn make their cars unreliable). Even the Mercedes G-wagen is extremely bloated now. The foundation of the vehicle hasn't changed, but Mercedes added a bunch of luxury crap, so now it's heavier and more anemic, not to mention very inefficient when it comes to gas mileage. And those super complex air suspensions are bound to fail sooner or later, and are most likely impossible to repair on your own.
      Here in the US, you'll only see Jeep Wranglers, Toyota Tacomas, FJ Cruisers & 4Runners, and maybe a Nissan here and there at popular off roading spots. OK maybe a rich Russian and his Russian buddies in a Range Rover, but even that's rare. (200 series) Land Cruisers are hard to find in the US, because they cost $85,000 for which you can get the nearly identical Lexus LX. Subaru has been the best selling brand in the US for a few years now. They're almost everywhere in the pacific Northwest where it rains all the time, and in the Northeast where there's lots of snow. In Colorado, you'll almost exclusively see Subarus and Toyotas in the mountains. I personally replaced my turbo Subaru Outback with a 4Runner a few weeks ago and couldn't be more satisfied. It's a shame the 4Runner is only sold in the Americas...it's a great 'stripped down' version of the Land Cruiser for half the price, more ground clearance and better approach angles. Then again, Australia and South Africa have the super awesome 70 series Land Cruisers AND they come with diesel...something we'll probably never get here :'(

    Nothing like a bit of bias when comparing apples to oranges. Ask anyone which vehicle they would prefer to travel through the centre of Australia or through the Cape York Peninsula in, and you will find Landrover, Range Rover and most of the other euro trash 4x4's would be bottom of the list. They are streets behind the Japanese in reliability, serviceability and functionality. l will admit that they have some clever technology in them, but alas, it is poorly executed and comes complete with a boot load of gremlins. I suppose when you consider the overall equation of safety, performance, reliabilty, economy and comfort, the Land Rover is right up the with the Lada.

  • @GeorgeAgasandian
    @GeorgeAgasandian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Amateurishly done. Defender can't be the King at least because of its lower reliability (you do not want to stuck in the middle of a mud road). Anyway, if you are using a short Defender, you should use short versions of Land Cruiser and Shogun (Pajero). Did you install the same tires on all cars? What was an air pressure in tires? And yet, regarding the ground clearance, it can be easily increased for all cars by replacing stock shocks and springs, which are not well designed usually in all standard cars. Etc, etc... And then run a test; otherwise, it's useless. And if we are going to vote for a king, then where are other candidates, like Merc G, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Nissan Patrol and Pathfinder?

The Wrangler is a more modern vehicle that is also great for normal commuting (daily driving) and with the 3.6 Petrol it acc in about 0-100km/h 6.5-8.5 seconds, thats similar to the old american muscle cars with V8 engines.

    • @KnightShadey
      @KnightShadey 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Birdphotoman44 The Defender is solid, but you're right it hasn't received much needed updates in a long time. The Euro Wrangler with the 2.8L CRD would've been a better direct comparison (though I prefer the 3.6L) than these two options in the video. Add the LandCruiser 70 (anniversary edition) or Nissan Patrol and you'd have a good all-around comparison. The models used in this video are more dirt-roaders than off-roaders, comparable to the Land Rover's more comfy segment, not the more basic and off-road centric Defender.
      Considering this video didn't really get into very Challenging off-roading, and more just steep & deep mud perhaps those were the right choice for the course, but there are far better "Proper 4x4s" out there as the title of the video suggests are the focus/quest.
      The only problem is that ALL of the good contenders/pretenders to the throne are being withdrawn or significantly changed, so there isn't a 'long-term' possibility out there with the Wrangler being updated, and the Toyota and Nissan potentially getting major redesigns too. Putting that 5.0L Cummins in a Patrol would be very nice, and if they don't muck-up the Wrangler redesign, a 3.0L EcoDiesel would be sweet there too.

    I can't believe i waste five minutes to watch this ridiculous, unfair, unprofessional comparison, i mean, seriouly, in reality, instead of just pushing throttle, there are millions of ways to get rid of the dilemma these two guys were in, and all they do is just keeping push it. These are off-road cars, not stupid-bollocks vehicles. I like Defender, but WTF is this? This is an indignity. Either the Mitsuishi guys were short-cutted or you are making this up, I can think of no reason that they would allow this happening.

    The Brits are sooooo bias when it comes to Land Rover, well without getting into details..
    1. The Land Crosier you're showing here shall be compared with the Landrover Discovery. Toyota has other models, e.g. land cruiser J79, that you shall compare with the Defender.. You need to learn more about the market mate!
    2. You also need to learn how to drive a Mitsubishi !!
    3. The audience nowadays are not as fool as might think!!
    4. Defender has proven its failure since 2015 :)

  • @filipgruner4255

    I think, every "offroader" is a king in his own "kingdom". It depends what ever we compare and what everyone of us feel as most important. Comparance is hardly possible to judge generally... For example: I have Defender 110 TD5 and I can't compare with some supercharged Land Cruiser in some "sand hill climbing". But when I was on races in wood, I was able to control the thin cab of Defender so nicely between trees like no other "muscle cars", which there simply can't go thru and were stuck and some of them were leaning against a tree... Sometimes You need heavy truck and big power, sometimes You need lighter and thinner car... Noone can have everything...
    But I use the car also for sleeping, inside is place for 145 x 200 cm 10 cm thick matrace and we sleep there with my girlfriend as at home in bedroom. AND, you can still sit inside car on that matrace, it's very pleasant when camping and outside is rainy... How you can manage in new Toyota for example... Will you drill the interier for attaching the stuff inside the car? How much you will pay for special holder for that and that in luxury cars? Or, I was able to move whole household of me or friends many times with ease, cause when you clear the interier out off the seats, its very big room inside. Try it with "electrified and motorized" seats of contemporary luxury offroaders... And I'm still speaking about offroader, cause I had such situation, when with this fully loaded Defender I needed to step on quite high pavement just between other cars parked there. Impossible with the common vans... So just engaged lo gear and nicely done... And I can say next and next uniq situation, where Defender rock. But it's my needs what I want from offroader. Someone needs to go quickly on higway, it's OK, it's his "king of the offroaders", that's all. Mine is Defender... All offroader can be friends, isn't it so?... I like, when we regard with Toyota's drivers. Not often, but sometimes, and it very nice...

    I'd say the Patrol or G-wagon is a better candidate than the Pajero, the pajero has lost about half it's ground clearance over the years. I no longer concider it an offroader.

  • @fernandodepinho2215
    @fernandodepinho2215 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try putting the land rover with its true competitors.. i.e Land Cruiser 76.. 79.. 78.. those are the ones its actually meant to rival. Not a poor mitsubishi or a Luxury Prado. Even though they're still very good for what they're designed to do.. which is go off road and take you to a formal event. Unlike the land rover which has one purpose, that is, farm work or exploring..
    At the end the Land rover is good, but your getting confused with who is supposed to rival who here. And who is designed for what.

    Proved nothing. Could have arrived at those conclusions at your desk with a ruler.
    Didn't faze the Defender or the Land Cruiser on a very basic course. On standard tyres an Evoque would have had no trouble with anything other than ground clearance.
    Clearly these two have no understanding of the word 'challenging'.
