Once simply never gets tired of listening to Rossini's operas. Doesn't matter if it's a re-work or not. Rossini is Rossini!

This is what Chopin said about this opera in his 1831 letter : "Rossini's Siege of Corinth has been given in the theatre ; very good. I am glad I stayed over for this opera. Wild, Heinefetter, Binder, Forti; in a word, all the best that Vienna has took part, and beautifully." ! :)

Check out the recording with Beverly Sills circa 1975 -- Opera was set in 1450s with fall of Corinth to the Ottomans -- (Constantople fell 1453) -- Opera written 1830s with Greek War of Independence and Rossini donated earnings to that effort -- Sills version recorded around 1975 with Cyprus crisis leading to the division of the Island

this version has a lot of differences with the Italian version with Beverly Sills; different arias, but similar musical themes throughout -- really interesting
1:30-1:36 conclusion of Act 2 more Pure Rossini

"Juste ciel, ah! Ta clémence", the Pamyra's prayer. In the italian version (Maometto II) it's "Giusto cielo, in tal periglio", sung by Anna Erisso (=Pamyra) in the first act. Rossini wrote Maometto II in Naples in 1820, after for Paris in 1826 wrote a new opera "Le siège de Corinthe", french versione with same plot and some variations and change in action and music (it's an 3 act opera, for exemple, Maometto II was in 2 act). They are both gorgeos operas!

@@ApeMusicale In my Ricordi score - as L'Assedio di Corinto - Pamira sings the Prayer just before the very end of the opera. I think this is basically the Edition La Scala used in 1975 for Sills' debut...
I had this Edition back in the 1970s and bought a new copy last year. Apparently Ricordi isn't doing a 'Critical Edition' of this opera - this is pretty bare-bones with some obvious errors.

@@suzannederringer1607 Sure: in Le siege de Corinthe the prayer is just before the very end (and in Maometto II Anna sings her prayer in the first act!). The critical edition fo Le siege de Corinthe is by Damien Colas for Fondazione Rossini/Casa Ricordi and was staged in Pesaro in 2017. In the critical ediction the very end has more chorus and the Pamyra's aria of II act is longer, for exemple. th-cam.com/video/RVsVezYeQPg/w-d-xo.html

Mi piace molto quest'opera e trovo i cantanti eccellenti, soprattutto Darina Takova🌹, ma la messinscena è orribile, veramente un pugno in un occhio. 🤔

Piètre direction! Misérable mise en scène! Pauvre Maestro Rossini! Aucune sensibilité musicale pour la tragédie!
