  • Here’s my humble review of an Ibanez UB804MOB that I purchased from Sweetwater. I’m 100% unsponsored at the time of this recording.

    Nothing beats an upright bassist rocking a Slayer shirt!!! You have my subscription, sir!

    Nice. Great review. I bought a 5-string version of this bass and expect it to finally arrive tomorrow, so I've been watching all the reviews again. Yours is the first to really go through all the sound variations, so thanks for that. Good stuff, man!

    Nice review! some labella tapewound strings and a soft foam bridge mute will get you there, and a nino mute will get you in ampeg baby bass land.

    It has a Compound Radius so you can use a Bow, the sound is actually halfway between an Upright Bass & an Electric Bass so it sounds "SPICY", great for Latin Music. They even make a 5 String Version

    Sounds great. However, not so sure transitioning to double bass from electric bass is easier via EUB. DB requires a different technique. First thing to learn is how to balance the bass against the stomach so the hands are not required to hold the bass. The instrument is anchored to the player's body so one can use arm weight and back muscles to support the left hand in pushing the strings down. That does not work on an EUB on a tripod - quite unstable. This can be compensated by low action - as seen here - meaning plucking as well as pushing strings down does not need as much force as on a DB. There are two further things to consider: First the neck heel, i.e. the point where the neck joins the body, is a key aid in DB position finding --- often missing on an EUB. Second a larger scale length makes intonation easier, not more difficult, as the notes are further apart. Taken together EUBs like this one are a class of their own. Get one if you like it but expect to develop a technique that is specific to this instrument and will not work on a DB. If you're attraction to EUB is that you really want to play DB, get a DB and don't waste time with a EUB.

      Play all of them. But yeah… especially a full size upright feels very different than a 3/4 electric, and the technique is significantly different. This does feel about half way between the two though. I kinda wish the neck radius was more like a traditional upright. The flat radius makes bowing clean very difficult. Especially for a beginner like me. The low action is great though. I’ll get a full size upright to learn after I move. I’m looking for a house in Puerto Rico, and it’s expensive to ship stuff down there, so we’re not buying anything new right now.

      This is absolutely correct. A 34” scale eub is nothing remotely like an acoustic upright. It’s just an upright fret less bass that has its own vibe.

    Great review! I hear the NS designs are a bit higher in quality and yahama but at the same time, the electric upright is a fairly young instrument so it'd be cool to see what more companies can do with it!

    Hi. Would you say this instrument requires more left hand pressure than, say, a P-bass or J-bass? Or would it be more accurate to say it’s just less difficult than a double bass?

    • @JonnyTravieso
      @JonnyTravieso  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Doesn’t require much pressure at all. Action is very low and straight. Short scale makes it easier to press the strings too.

      I have some new pedals. I may be able to squeeze a respectable upright tone out of it. I'm going to try a 1982 Boss Octaver on it this evening.

    I'm putting the original strings back and losing the nylons.
    Nylons are no good for bowing.

    • @JonnyTravieso
      @JonnyTravieso  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nylons sound cool, but learning to bow is half the fun. I wonder is there’s some pickup options that might give it a meatier sound. I’m not opposed to routing out a pickup hole, and soldering in a switch.

    Go for the real stuff or stay with the electric bass. Electric upright bass will never sound like a real acoustic upright bass.

      Actually the sound is somewhere between an Electric Bass & an Acoustic Upright Bass, so it's Spicy sounding perfect for Latin
