As already stated elsewhere; it paddles faster and is easier to steer with a kayak paddle but I prefer the single blade for most situations as that is what I was trained to use.
I haven't fitted a skeg so far and doubt I will to be honest, i don't find I have any issues at all keeping the boat going where I want it when paddling solo. This may be due to paddling Canadian canoes solo for about 8 years as well as benefiting from some professional coaching too.

I own a Palava 400 too. Did you mount a skeg ? I will do that, because on slow deep rivers it helps a lot when paddeling alone.
