Now that I'm older, I've realised the meaning behind this video. Twilight sacrifed not only just her wings and alicorn magic, but her immortality aswell. The reason Celestia looks upset with pain in her eyes is because she knows Twilight will no longer be by her side forever. Twilight did a very brave thing.
I just now realized that after Twilight broke the statues of her friends, she lost her wings and turned back into a unicorn. And if she's a unicorn, that means she isn't immortal anymore. Now I know what the question means when it asks, "If you had to choose between friends and forever, what would you choose?"
Celestia's face hits me hard. Just imagine how she feels, knowing that her precious student will one day pass on. How she chose to give up her immortality for the chance to live the remainder of her life with her friends. But I don't think Celestia has that option. It makes me wonder if Celestia asked Twilight to make friends because she doesn't have the luxury to do so herself anymore. We never see Celestia with any friends of her own, despite her lessons on the importance of friendship. I can only assume she did have a group of close friends when she was young, similar to Twilight, but they passed on long ago. With the weight of the crown and her own immortality, did Celestia decide that she couldn't afford to lose any more friends? But she still wanted her student to be able to experience that magic before, she too, became immortal. Was Twilight the closest thing she had to a true friend in years (other than her sister)? If so, how heartbreaking must it be to think you may finally be able to keep someone you care about close through the years, only for her to choose to give up that immortality and leave you anyway... I'm reading too much into it, but it just got me thinking what was going through Celestia's mind here.
You're not wrong. I thought of this too, and you make an excellent point. But, if that be the case, then I feel so sorry for Celestia to have to lose probably the only (real) friend she's had in the years she's been living. I would say that is is kind of selfish on Twilight to not think about Celestia's feelings in this, besides her own. She probably didn't even think it through that if she were to pass away, then Celestia would be alone (besides her sister), and she would continue to rule equestria instead of having her big break. But, I can see where Twilight is coming from, she's just not mature enough to decide that even if her friends will pass, she'll have to come to accept it.
This hurt. Not because the series ended, but because of the memories. I didn’t grow up with a good childhood but MLP always made me feel better when I watched it, so watching this and understanding it in a better way hits harder.
I remember watching this show around when it first came out (had already graduated highschool recently) and thinking "This is pretty good. Glad kids have a good show to grow up with." -- TV had become pretty stale at that point for me and FiM was kind of the only thing I ever turned it on for anymore. Kinda funny when you think about it. It's been a long time, but glad to finally hear these kinds of comments. Always thought that it'd really impact a lot of kids who watched it growing up.

Yep it is. My headcanon states that Twilight will NOT become immortal, because she would give it up for her friends. That seems to be something unique to Celestia/Luna anyway. Not to mention that the elements don't work anymore without all 6 of them, as the friends they are.

I don't consider the last season canon (except for 3 episodes that I think are ok without any changes - Point of No Return, Common Ground, and Going to Seed - there are a few more that I could fix with some changes). So anything that takes that or the 'ending' into account, I just consider bad fanfiction and ignore.
It can be. If 2 friends can make it through the rigorous journey of life, friendship can last. However, many people will have friends who they think they will always stay with, but something external ( i. e. someone moving to a different country or marrying ) can have an effect of ending it. But yes, friendship can be eternal
I came back and watched this, and I saw the pain in Celestia's eyes for the first time. Now I understand. It was more than just her own immortality she sacrificed....it was the time she would have with Celestia. Her mentor's hope of not witnessing her passing was extinguished in a beautiful cascade of magic. So many feels again....
Hi there random person reading this. Here, have some coffee and a donut in exchange for sitting here with me. This video has always meant a lot to me. As I'm sure everyone who is watching this video: I am a fan of My Little Pony. I found the show around 2014 when I was in fourth grade. I watched the show religiously, joined the fandom as an 11-year-old with unrestricted internet access does, and watched as the fandom grew. MLP was my lifeline. I had visitations with my biological father, a very abusive man, and MLP helped me survive the weekends and Wednesdays I had to be with him. Whenever I would feel scared or sad I would watch the show, listen to Land of Equestria when I couldn't sleep, play MLP roleplay on Roblox to distract myself from him. My dad ended up abandoning me when I was 12. I continued to watch the show and it helped me cope until I... didn't need it anymore. It had helped me, supported me, helped me cope until I didn't need to cope anymore. I got help, went to therapy, had wonderful friends who taught me the true magic of friendship. So I stopped watching. I went back to it every once and a while but it wasn't a part of my life anymore. I'm now 18, about to graduate high school, and...I'm scared. I'm an adult now. I thought I wouldn't be here by the time I hit senior year but I did it. I survived! And I'm scared. To try to relive my childhood I refound MLP, but the show is now over, the fandom beginning to fade, and I wasn't there at the end of it. I missed the last Bronycon, I wasn't there at the premiere of the finale, I feel like I abandoned this show without giving it a proper goodbye. Without thanking it for everything it has done for me. To celebrate graduating I am watching the show from beginning to end. A poetic end to my childhood as I both relive it and finally see how it ended. I'm saying goodbye to this old friend but not for long, just a "see you later" until our paths cross again-- and I'm sure they will someday! Just the thought that Twilight could lose her friends one day is very heartbreaking. After watching the last episode of MLP, I started to cry... Not because the series ended but because she is immortal. One day Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbowdash and Pinky Pie will die and Twilight... she will live on... The ponies that were important to her will die one day...
It doesnt have to be this way if you dont want it to be. Jim Miller said they dont know how long everyone lives including twilight. They are leaving it up to fans to decide with fanfics. I made mine where she gives up her immortality to pass with her friends.

They never confirmed nor denied that the rest of the Mane 6 weren't immortal but still stick by the claim Twilight won't outlive her friends. So either NONE of them are immortal or all of them are, because if she isn't immortal and won't outlive her friends, Twilight would be the first to die. And just because the rest of them look older by the finale, doesn't mean they aren't immortal. It just means their immortality took a while to kick in and halt their aging process and leaving them in the state we saw them at in the finale. Or at least that's my interpretation
@@prosperstarling3513 Are they really dead. Sure the G5 movie suggests that but in the g5 comics it turned out discord was a live so it's possible that Twilight might be too, although it was stated that the G4 comics weren't canon but it's possible that the G5 comics will be canpn.
I'd appreciated how this animation looked before, but never really thought on how much of a time sink these things are. I've never used any animation software prior to, but downloaded SFM just to see if I could find my way around the software by fiddling around, and good lord, the sheer level of work that must go in to these things. Mad respect. I mean, I get there's a massive difference between someone who's spent years doing this, a professional, if you will, and someone just booting up the software for the first time, but the attention to detail in this is impressive, now that I'm seeing what time and effort goes in to using software like this.

This animation just... it really does hit so much harder since the show's been over. I haven't watched this in a long time, but it seems everyone has the same feelings. A melancholy sadness. If anything this animation shows the fragility of life, and why we should enjoy what we have while we have it. Because nothing lasts forever, and that's okay. If anything, we should just stop and sniff the roses, even for a moment.
It would make sense if Twilight did this and Celestia was still alive to tell the story. She did narrate the opening scene when the book first opened. Though in my headcanon story she gave up her immortality and passes before Twilight. Look it up guys, Luster Dawn New Days of the Magic of Friendship.

Twilight can either sacrifice her immortality and die with her friends or live longer than them. Nothing is confirmed as of what happens after the finale but I just commented that this video is even sadder when you take into account that Twilight is immortal, especially after seeing the finale. And I'm not sure why you think the ending is bad just cause it's sad... Sad endings aren't bad, they're actually realistic and the ending wasn't even sad at all.

So I had a 12th grade LA teacher who is a huge brony. He wants us to find the true meaning of videos, literature, and poems and this was the first one he picked. The animator doesn't tell you it's story or it's meaning so you need to guess. He had us look certain facts about the show like alicorns and the Mane 6 so we knew what to write. At the end of the year, we were all bronies. On the last day of school, we wore MLP related shirts and toys. When we bring in toys normally, the school makes us give them to him for the junk drawer. He didn't because he was so happy and it was the end of the year too. He was the best teacher ever and most of us still talk to him. Me and him love Dash and will talk about episodes for hours. Today I ran into him at Target and we got a Coffee and some chicken fingers and pizza for me and talked. Still have the yearbook photo of our brony classroom.
This is what I think happened.. It had been years since twilight's friends,parents and her own brother had passed away. She had enough of being alone, she didn't even want to live anymore, however she knew she could try to find a spell to bring her friends back... but it would cost her a price, her Alicorn magic, and possibly her own life, she told the princesses all of them hoping she would be ok, celestia came with twilight, giving her one Last goodbye, twilight walked up into her friends' santuary. . Her past with her friends flashing right past her... She Had Decided. Using all of her Alicorn magic she Shattered her wings to pieces...the statues of her friends shattering all at once. The spell caused her to fall unconscious her friends towered over her hoping she was ok. Twilight stood up limping. Her plan had worked.

I may not be a brony, but this animation is a beautiful visual representation of what it means to make a sacrifice for the people who truly matter to you. It's like a pulse in your heart that lets you find happiness in a few short moments with your loved ones than eternity without them.

This is actually very true. Well, sure. A lifetime of eternity will give you opportunities and experiences beyond anyone's imagination. If I may put in my two cents. I don't think Twilight revived her friends at the cost of her wings. Rather, I take it that she sacrificed her immortality as an alicorn and the effects of her long life came rushing into her. She didn't revive her friends, instead, she died and was welcomed by the souls of her friends who had waited patiently to be reunited.
+ShaDHP23 that is one theory...the only problem is we don't know how long it's been since her friends passed....it could have been recently, and that with the help of the elements (and the statues) she created a spell to bring them back, but with a major cost...the elements could help channel that energy and legitimately bring them back; as we saw in the episodes where she accidentally switched everyone's cutie marks and then fixed it, becoming a princess afterward, the elements hold their respective bearer's very being in them (whether it be memories, emotions, etc.), so it is possible that the elements could essentially remake all of her friends minds, thoughts, feelings, and memories, and the statues would be made into their bodies (conversion into organic matter is a possibility, but that's not my point in this)....the only other thing that would be needed would be magic to spark the spell, and i mean A LOT of magic since in this case it's bringing back life to the dead....Twilight has that much magic in her as a princess, but in order to do the spell properly (theoretically at least), she'd have to give up all the alicorn magic in her...she could still have her unicorn magic from before, she might also not have it, but in the process she would have lost a large part of her magic and her immortality in order to bring them back.....Just so you know, I thought back to how rituals worked in Full Metal Alchemist for this theory, and how some of the laws in the show worked...in this specific instance I thought back to the Laws of Equivalent Exchange, which, in essence, state that "In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be lost or destroyed." (or in this case payed)....in some cases these Laws have a literal meaning, but in some cases, the part of "equal value" is up to the spell caster (something they hold extremely dear vs. something they want just as bad for example)...Twilight loves her friend, and we see throughout the show that she holds them most dear, however, she also cherishes the fact that she is a princess (somewhat) and has a duty to Equestria as a princess, so if we followed the Laws from FMA, her giving up her immortality and her alicorn magic would be of roughly the same value as her friends to her, thus the ritual could work without really any ill effects (That's my theory anyway).

Hundreds of years after the others deaths, twilight can't take it anymore and sacrifices her immortality to be with them again. It's beautiful, to see how willing she'd be to sacrifice being a goddess for her friends. They really should cover her immortality in season 9 or something
That would be a perfect way to end season 9 but unfortunately even if the creators want to they can’t because it is still a show for little kids and kids cant know about death and stuff
Whelp looks like a lot of us were right that this would be how things ended for the series....and it's just as much of an emotional shot to the nuts as it was back when we first thought of it.
The sadness and sarrow that twilight shows, plus her explosive power she shows, must really show how unbreakable her friendship, giving away Eternal Life, sacrificing one thing, because she probably realizes, that if your immortal while others are not, that means death, that being the next step to life, wouldn't be worth it, because you wouldn't die along side with the people that you hold dear, I even sang along with twilight, I can say the lyrics I said if y'all want, and an important lesson of this animation, even years later, shows that once you have something, your the only one to be sure whether to restore it or keep it burden inside your memory, hurting your heart both physically, and emotionally, that's why twilight gave up being an alicorn, because she wanted what she holded dear in her normal unicorn life
@@NeteriXX This isn't sacrificing herself for them. This is going with them. True they wouldn't want her to die, but she has a right to make her own choice, I'm sure her friends would understand. They wouldn't want her to be miserable. If I were made immortal and had to watch generations of loves pass on I'd throw myself off a cliff. I hate the idea of being immortal and enduring that. Its okay if you don't agree with me and could live with that, but its my opinion. I wouldn't endure it though. True loss can heal overtime, but I'm firm in my belief. I wouldn't take immortality, its a curse. I'd rather die. As for the Princesses, we don't know they are still around since they didn't appear in the epilogue. My theory is they gave up their immortality when they gave up the crown.
7 years ago.. Damn, I was 21, and I remember crying the first (and 2nd, and 3rd.. and so on) time I watched this. Now I'm 28, and coming back to this after I've managed to finish the show, understanding this animation and the very real outcome of Twilight outliving her friends, well I'm *still* a blubbering mess. More so than before! Still an excellent animation that tugs at the heartstrings.
i have a theory so i think that twilight has been a princess for a long time, and her friends would have obviously died before her, so she made them stone in her castle to remember them, but she missed them so much that she gave up her immortality and alicorn magic to revive her friends.

This is a beautiful video. I think a lot of people will watch this and not quite understand fully what is happening. As each scene unfolds, a new piece of the puzzle falls into place along with the realization of what is happening. I think most people that understand the beauty of this video and the meaning of each scene will be unable to avoid crying. This is truly one of the best works of art I have ever witnessed. Kudos to you sir for making such a glorious story.

Ok, this video is really beautiful and sad at the same time. I'm 26 and only recently discovered MLP and I think the series is really nice. If only I had known the series when I was at school, I suffered a lot from bullying back then and I think the series would have helped me with my emotional problems. I like the series not only because it is beautiful and funny but also because it conveys moral values, very much in the area of friendship, which is what it is all about. Without knowing the series, you can't understand the deeper meaning of this video and don't realize how extremely emotional it is because you can't know what a deep and strong friendship the six share and what Twilight will give up to see her friends again. Although I know the series, it took me a while to fully understand the deeper meaning and understand all the details such as Celestia's facial expression and the video actually did what nothing in games, films, series or videos has done before, it got me made to cry 😭

After viewing Season 9 (including the The Last Problem) this hit hard. It needs to re-uploaded or remastered again, but brought up as a tribute to the MLP:FiM Series once again.
The ending was revealed to be open to interpretation. Here's my head canon, she makes her student Luster her successor, gives up her immortality, retires to Silver Shoals and dies with her friends, Spike and Discord, who binded all their life forces together so they all die at the same time.
It's amazing how accurate this is. Twilight will probably live for thousands of years like the princesses before her. She'll live and have to watch all of her friends grow old and die. This was actually the first thought on my mind post-finale.
i hadn't noticed the fading of the wings off of twilight the first time i saw this at Bronycon, but after seeing that, this is even more deep than when i saw it then. wow. truly this is a wonderful work of art.

OMG This guy predicted the Season 9 finale ending 3 years ago! In the finale, Twilight grows up to look like Princess Celestia and here friends grow old. This indicates they'll all be dead and she'll be alone. Yes it does look like she could outlive her friends. But the writers are leaving it up to us. I have a theory. Twilight is going to make Luster the new princess and give up her immortality. I think that's what Celestia and Luna did.

As the princess of friendship I kind of think all of them could have become Alicorns I mean it would have been dumb but so is twilight being alive after everyone dies. The princess of friendship has no Freinds.
Here's my own little backstory I thought of- When an unknown evil potentially kills Twilight's friends in an attempt to throw the harmony off balance, Princess Celestia manages to take the remains of them, and store them away in a safe place for Twilight to later discover. When she does, Celestia tells her she has one of the hardest decisions she will ever have to make; "Give up your wings, title and immortality, or give up your friends". If she gave up all these things, the power within them would be transferred between her friends, reviving them. (If you've watched the latest MLP movie, imagine them being turned into 'statues', like the storm King did to the three princesses, making it easier to get their magic) However Twilight found this an easy decision. She knew she represented the element of magic, but that didn't mean she needed a title to prove that. She casts a dangerous spell, that can only work if she remembers the precious moments spent with her friends. She remembers the laughing, the crying, the fun, everything. Her friends come back to life once more, only at a cost, as her wings are gone. Her friends step down from the pedestals and comfort her. She may have lost her title, immortality and wings, but she would never lose her friends again.

Celestia's face hits me hard.
Just imagine how she feels, knowing that her precious student will one day pass on. How she chose to give up her immortality for the chance to live the remainder of her life with her friends. But I don't think Celestia has that option.
It makes me wonder if Celestia asked Twilight to make friends because she doesn't have the luxury to do so herself anymore. We never see Celestia with any friends of her own, despite her lessons on the importance of friendship. I can only assume she did have a group of close friends when she was young, similar to Twilight, but they passed on long ago. With the weight of the crown and her own immortality, did Celestia decide that she couldn't afford to lose any more friends? But she still wanted her student to be able to experience that magic before, she too, became immortal.
Was Twilight the closest thing she had to a true friend in years (other than her sister)? If so, how heartbreaking must it be to think you may finally be able to keep someone you care about close through the years, only for her to choose to give up that immortality and leave you anyway...
I'm reading too much into it, but it just got me thinking what was going through Celestia's mind here.

You're not wrong. I thought of this too, and you make an excellent point. But, if that be the case, then I feel so sorry for Celestia to have to lose probably the only (real) friend she's had in the years she's been living. I would say that is is kind of selfish on Twilight to not think about Celestia's feelings in this, besides her own. She probably didn't even think it through that if she were to pass away, then Celestia would be alone (besides her sister), and she would continue to rule equestria instead of having her big break. But, I can see where Twilight is coming from, she's just not mature enough to decide that even if her friends will pass, she'll have to come to accept it.

Glad kids have a good show to grow up with." -- TV had become pretty stale at that point for me and FiM was kind of the only thing I ever turned it on for anymore. Kinda funny when you think about it.
It's been a long time, but glad to finally hear these kinds of comments. Always thought that it'd really impact a lot of kids who watched it growing up.

I came back and watched this, and I saw the pain in Celestia's eyes for the first time. Now I understand. It was more than just her own immortality she sacrificed....it was the time she would have with Celestia. Her mentor's hope of not witnessing her passing was extinguished in a beautiful cascade of magic. So many feels again....

Hi there random person reading this. Here, have some coffee and a donut in exchange for sitting here with me. This video has always meant a lot to me. As I'm sure everyone who is watching this video: I am a fan of My Little Pony. I found the show around 2014 when I was in fourth grade. I watched the show religiously, joined the fandom as an 11-year-old with unrestricted internet access does, and watched as the fandom grew. MLP was my lifeline. I had visitations with my biological father, a very abusive man, and MLP helped me survive the weekends and Wednesdays I had to be with him. Whenever I would feel scared or sad I would watch the show, listen to Land of Equestria when I couldn't sleep, play MLP roleplay on Roblox to distract myself from him. My dad ended up abandoning me when I was 12. I continued to watch the show and it helped me cope until I... didn't need it anymore. It had helped me, supported me, helped me cope until I didn't need to cope anymore. I got help, went to therapy, had wonderful friends who taught me the true magic of friendship. So I stopped watching. I went back to it every once and a while but it wasn't a part of my life anymore. I'm now 18, about to graduate high school, and...I'm scared. I'm an adult now. I thought I wouldn't be here by the time I hit senior year but I did it. I survived! And I'm scared. To try to relive my childhood I refound MLP, but the show is now over, the fandom beginning to fade, and I wasn't there at the end of it. I missed the last Bronycon, I wasn't there at the premiere of the finale, I feel like I abandoned this show without giving it a proper goodbye. Without thanking it for everything it has done for me. To celebrate graduating I am watching the show from beginning to end. A poetic end to my childhood as I both relive it and finally see how it ended. I'm saying goodbye to this old friend but not for long, just a "see you later" until our paths cross again-- and I'm sure they will someday! So, to everyone still here, here's another donut and a refill for that coffee, and a goodbye. Thank you for being here for me without even knowing it. Just the thought that Twilight could lose her friends one day is very heartbreaking. After watching the last episode of MLP, I started to cry... Not because the series ended but because she is immortal. One day Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbowdash and Pinky Pie will die and Twilight... she will live on... The ponies that were important to her will die one day...
It doesnt have to be this way if you dont want it to be. Jim Miller said they dont know how long everyone lives including twilight. They are leaving it up to fans to decide with fanfics. I made mine where she gives up her immortality to pass with her friends.

You're right. They never confirmed nor denied that the rest of the Mane 6 weren't immortal but still stick by the claim Twilight won't outlive her friends.
So either NONE of them are immortal or all of them are, because if she isn't immortal and won't outlive her friends, Twilight would be the first to die.
And just because the rest of them look older by the finale, doesn't mean they aren't immortal. It just means their immortality took a while to kick in and halt their aging process and leaving them in the state we saw them at in the finale.
Or at least that's my interpretation

I'd appreciated how this animation looked before, but never really thought on how much of a time sink these things are. I've never used any animation software prior to, but downloaded SFM just to see if I could find my way around the software by fiddling around, and good lord, the sheer level of work that must go in to these things. Mad respect. I mean, I get there's a massive difference between someone who's spent years doing this, a professional, if you will, and someone just booting up the software for the first time, but the attention to detail in this is impressive, now that I'm seeing what time and effort goes in to using software like this.

This animation just... it really does hit so much harder since the show's been over. I haven't watched this in a long time, but it seems everyone has the same feelings. A melancholy sadness. If anything this animation shows the fragility of life, and why we should enjoy what we have while we have it. Because nothing lasts forever, and that's okay. If anything, we should just stop and sniff the roses, even for a moment.
It would make sense if Twilight did this and Celestia was still alive to tell the story. She did narrate the opening scene when the book first opened. Nothing is confirmed as of what happens after the finale but I just commented that this video is even sadder when you take into account that Twilight is immortal, especially after seeing the finale. So I had a 12th grade LA teacher who is a huge brony. He wants us to find the true meaning of videos, literature, and poems and this was the first one he picked. The animator doesn't tell you it's story or it's meaning so you need to guess. He had us look certain facts about the show like alicorns and the Mane 6 so we knew what to write. At the end of the year, we were all bronies. On the last day of school, we wore MLP related shirts and toys. When we bring in toys normally, the school makes us give them to him for the junk drawer. He didn't because he was so happy and it was the end of the year too. He was the best teacher ever and most of us still talk to him. Me and him love Dash and will talk about episodes for hours. Today I ran into him at Target and we got a Coffee and some chicken fingers and pizza for me and talked. Still have the yearbook photo of our brony classroom.

This is what I think happened..
It had been years since twilight's friends,parents and her own brother had passed away. She had enough of being alone, she didn't even want to live anymore, however she knew she could try to find a spell to bring her friends back... but it would cost her a price, her Alicorn magic, and possibly her own life, she told the princesses all of them hoping she would be ok, celestia came with twilight, giving her one Last goodbye, twilight walked up into her friends' santuary. . Her past with her friends flashing right past her... She Had Decided.
Using all of her Alicorn magic she
Shattered her wings to pieces...the statues of her friends shattering all at once. The spell caused her to fall unconscious her friends towered over her hoping she was ok. Twilight stood up limping.
Her plan had worked.

I come back to this, every so often; maybe once every year or two......just rewatched it now and I straight up balled. It started as just a bit of nostalgia, then a single tear, then when she opened the door and saw the statues, Waterworks started. Couldn't even hold back..........i'm not normally this emotional about fictional things, much less "non-canon" fanworks..........but heck. this still brings me to tears, even knowing intimately about how it was made, it still immersed me to the point of tears........

If I may put in my two cents. I don't think Twilight revived her friends at the cost of her wings. Rather, I take it that she sacrificed her immortality as an alicorn and the effects of her long life came rushing into her. She didn't revive her friends, instead, she died and was welcomed by the souls of her friends who had waited patiently to be reunited.

+ShaDHP23 that is one theory...the only problem is we don't know how long it's been since her friends passed....it could have been recently, and that with the help of the elements (and the statues) she created a spell to bring them back, but with a major cost...the elements could help channel that energy and legitimately bring them back; as we saw in the episodes where she accidentally switched everyone's cutie marks and then fixed it, becoming a princess afterward, the elements hold their respective bearer's very being in them (whether it be memories, emotions, etc.), so it is possible that the elements could essentially remake all of her friends minds, thoughts, feelings, and memories, and the statues would be made into their bodies (conversion into organic matter is a possibility, but that's not my point in this)....the only other thing that would be needed would be magic to spark the spell, and i mean A LOT of magic since in this case it's bringing back life to the dead....Twilight has that much magic in her as a princess, but in order to do the spell properly (theoretically at least), she'd have to give up all the alicorn magic in her...she could still have her unicorn magic from before, she might also not have it, but in the process she would have lost a large part of her magic and her immortality in order to bring them back.....Just so you know, I thought back to how rituals worked in Full Metal Alchemist for this theory, and how some of the laws in the show worked...in this specific instance I thought back to the Laws of Equivalent Exchange, which, in essence, state that "In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be lost or destroyed." (or in this case payed)....in some cases these Laws have a literal meaning, but in some cases, the part of "equal value" is up to the spell caster (something they hold extremely dear vs. something they want just as bad for example)...Twilight loves her friend, and we see throughout the show that she holds them most dear, however, she also cherishes the fact that she is a princess (somewhat) and has a duty to Equestria as a princess, so if we followed the Laws from FMA, her giving up her immortality and her alicorn magic would be of roughly the same value as her friends to her, thus the ritual could work without really any ill effects (That's my theory anyway).

Hundreds of years after the others deaths, twilight can't take it anymore and sacrifices her immortality to be with them again. It's beautiful, to see how willing she'd be to sacrifice being a goddess for her friends. They really should cover her immortality in season 9 or something

Whelp looks like a lot of us were right that this would be how things ended for the series....and it's just as much of an emotional shot to the nuts as it was back when we first thought of it.
The sadness and sarrow that twilight shows, plus her explosive power she shows, must really show how unbreakable her friendship, giving away Eternal Life, sacrificing one thing, because she probably realizes, that if your immortal while others are not, that means death, that being the next step to life, wouldn't be worth it, because you wouldn't die along side with the people that you hold dear, I even sang along with twilight, I can say the lyrics I said if y'all want, and an important lesson of this animation, even years later, shows that once you have something, your the only one to be sure whether to restore it or keep it burden inside your memory, hurting your heart both physically, and emotionally, that's why twilight gave up being an alicorn, because she wanted what she holded dear in her normal unicorn life

I wouldn't take immortality, its a curse. I'd rather die. As for the Princesses, we don't know they are still around since they didn't appear in the epilogue. My theory is they gave up their immortality when they gave up the crown.

Damn, I was 21, and I remember crying the first (and 2nd, and 3rd.. and so on) time I watched this.
Now I'm 28, and coming back to this after I've managed to finish the show, understanding this animation and the very real outcome of Twilight outliving her friends, well I'm *still* a blubbering mess. More so than before!

i have a theory
so i think that twilight has been a princess for a long time, and her friends would have obviously died before her, so she made them stone in her castle to remember them, but she missed them so much that she gave up her immortality and alicorn magic to revive her friends.
Actually I’d like to think this was the result of a battle that somehow encased them in stone and after many years she found the solution to save them

This is a beautiful video. I think a lot of people will watch this and not quite understand fully what is happening. As each scene unfolds, a new piece of the puzzle falls into place along with the realization of what is happening. I think most people that understand the beauty of this video and the meaning of each scene will be unable to avoid crying. This is truly one of the best works of art I have ever witnessed. Kudos to you sir for making such a glorious story.

I'm 26 and only recently discovered MLP and I think the series is really nice. If only I had known the series when I was at school, I suffered a lot from bullying back then and I think the series would have helped me with my emotional problems. I like the series not only because it is beautiful and funny but also because it conveys moral values, very much in the area of friendship, which is what it is all about. Without knowing the series, you can't understand the deeper meaning of this video and don't realize how extremely emotional it is because you can't know what a deep and strong friendship the six share and what Twilight will give up to see her friends again. Although I know the series, it took me a while to fully understand the deeper meaning and understand all the details such as Celestia's facial expression and the video actually did what nothing in games, films, series or videos has done before, it got me made to cry 😭

After viewing Season 9 (including the The Last Problem) this hit hard.
It needs to re-uploaded or remastered again, but brought up as a tribute to the MLP:FiM Series once again.
The ending was revealed to be open to interpretation. Here's my head canon, she makes her student Luster her successor, gives up her immortality, retires to Silver Shoals and dies with her friends, Spike and Discord, who binded all their life forces together so they all die at the same time.
It's amazing how accurate this is. Twilight will probably live for thousands of years like the princesses before her. She'll live and have to watch all of her friends grow old and die. This was actually the first thought on my mind post-finale.
i hadn't noticed the fading of the wings off of twilight the first time i saw this at Bronycon, but after seeing that, this is even more deep than when i saw it then. wow. truly this is a wonderful work of art.

As the princess of friendship I kind of think all of them could have become Alicorns I mean it would have been dumb but so is twilight being alive after everyone dies. The princess of friendship has no Freinds.
I've realized every time I watch this, it reminds me of what sacrifices we make for our friends and for our selves.
Here's my own little backstory I thought of-
When an unknown evil potentially kills Twilight's friends in an attempt to throw the harmony off balance, Princess Celestia manages to take the remains of them, and store them away in a safe place for Twilight to later discover. When she does, Celestia tells her she has one of the hardest decisions she will ever have to make; "Give up your wings, title and immortality, or give up your friends". If she gave up all these things, the power within them would be transferred between her friends, reviving them. (If you've watched the latest MLP movie, imagine them being turned into 'statues', like the storm King did to the three princesses, making it easier to get their magic)
However Twilight found this an easy decision. She knew she represented the element of magic, but that didn't mean she needed a title to prove that.
She casts a dangerous spell, that can only work if she remembers the precious moments spent with her friends. She remembers the laughing, the crying, the fun, everything. Her friends come back to life once more, only at a cost, as her wings are gone. Her friends step down from the pedestals and comfort her.
She may have lost her title, immortality and wings, but she would never lose her friends again.

I took a nostalgia trip tonight and landed here. This was one of the first fandom animations I remember watching (joined in late September 2015) and at the time, I didn't realize how poignant a feeling this animation represented.

If Twilight is indeed outliving her friends, I'm done being a brony. No more fandom for me, I'm burning my entire fanart, fanfics and toys. FUCK YOU HASBRO, for ruining my favorite cartoon of all time with the worst sad ending ever. I'd rather spent this last decade watching porn, slasher movies and 1000 ways to die instead of this garbage!!!!
