- After a favourable weather window appeared for crossing the Atlantic, we got down to business and put a hold on exploring Bermuda.
The day arrived and we headed out into beautiful sailing conditions. Despite the fantastic weather, we were both feeling a little nervous as a result of our last disastrous Atlantic Ocean crossing attempt... to say that we were a bit on edge was an understatement!
But the days seem to slip by with only a few minor noises and groans to concern us with. By day 4, we were used to them and had slipped into a good routine.
We were both unable to believe the excellent weather conditions that we chose to leave in... in our mind, they seemed too good to be true and SOMETHING bad was bound to happen!

The reason it seemed so easy is because you guys have done so much hard work on your boat and resolved so many issues. I am sure you know this - you put in the work!! Amazing job hopefully the rest of the trip went as well.
I really liked this episode. You two were talking very honestly about all the things that cross our minds when we are risking our lives in a way that is new. This feeling is how mature adults with full knowledge of their situation approach risk after taking all precautions possible. I have been watching the two of you 'grow' into salty seadogs for a while now; you should be quite proud of yourselves. The sea is unforgiving and does not suffer fools to live but I would gladly sail with you two young folks. I became a golden shellback many years ago.

In the Naval Air Training Command (USN) we had an acronym NAFOD (No Apparent Fear Of Death). It was not a compliment and had nothing to do with courage. Fear is a good thing. Flying at night I’d hear “ night noises” just being hyper aware of the slightest normal systems sounds on the aircraft that I’d never notice during daytime flying.
Crossing the Atlantic!!! I know you’ve posted a bit about getting ready for the crossing, but I feel like you kinda snuck up on it and didn’t talk too much about it (lest it be ready for you!). Looking like you may have successfully sprung the surprise on the Atlantic gods/sea monsters/giant squid/etc... but evidently you can’t fool the Jelly Fish, who seemed to be ready and waiting! Really happy for you that you went for it!

I have done this same passage, its awesome trip, but go a little further North before going east. But when you get to the Azores, its got to be the coolest place on the planet for sailors, you will not want to leave.

you've captured the reality of anxiety regarding confidence in your rig...i have found that even when you complete major refit and replace rigging, through hulls , and such, all under a microscope , you always consider a possible failure. the best way i've found to overcome those inevitable fears is to have multiple backup plans for each catostrophic possibility...hull breach , demasting are the two biggies...i'm sure you know your through hull systems completely and have tools and materials located in highly accessible location. same goes for heavy duty wire cutters stowed on deck and easily accessible in case of rig failure...
i'm sure you two highly competent people are prepared, but just a friendly reminder sometimes helps...fair sailing !

One has to love the English Channel where one only hears Cargo Ship horns in the thick fog of the night. Back in the day radar was all we had and in fog it was limited in resolution. After days at sea anything is an eye opener. Glad you all are safe.

This might be painful but our daughter crossed from Newport to Gibralter in 9 days under sail last month. Oh the boat is a 56 meter Perini Navi. Alot of 15 knot sailing.

Fair winds and smooth seas are the wishes of this sailor, now land locked. I enjoyed the beautiful sunsets at sea, the full moons in a clear sky, the feel of the wind in your face along with the occasional splash of ocean. Seeing the flying fish, the dolphins running and playing in front of the bow and the occasional whales. My choice, I'd still be sailing. So happy to see the both of being so glib and honest about those annoying little noises and knowing that neither one of you will be lulled to sleep with both eyes.

First to say i'm so happy to see you back
If you have tuned your rigging then the creaking is nothing but age. I am sure you have checked all your shrouds. Stainless steel can corrode (chloride corrosion). At low temps it takes time. Halyards will always slap the mast but you can see any fraying if the lines. Bon Voyage! Never forget “The canvas can do Mirales!” Calm winds and fair winds.
I have spent many hours in the marina listening to rigging. It sings to you (along with the wild parrots). However it is no fun when you are in 30 knot winds to have a shroud snap and you lose your mast. That is why I have a spare. For me it is $2000 of insurance.

Sailing plans are both what to do with gales and when there's no wind. All part of learning. Glad to be apart of the learning journey

Good decision to make the crossing now rather than wait. I would not worry too much about all the squeaks groans and such because worry is a waste of energy, What will be will be.

I suggest a thick bamboo pole. It will work. A Swedish couple used one for months in the Marquises. It beats jibing. 😂😂😂👍👍👍

Lovely video! You've put alot of effort into the boat since yoru first trip and it seems to be paying off. Shame you didn't have a whisker pole though! One last thing - if you call a cargo ship via DSC it will set an alert off on their bridge and put a record in their log (plus breaks up the monotony for them too - they probably just wanted to have a look at your yacht :-)!). Hopeing that your good luck holds for the rest of the trip :-)!
Good video. Thank you for the info on Wing on Wing. As a rookie sailor I've tried it twice and it was just more messy, and slow, than anything else. None of the sailing books tell you this. (They also don't tell you that close reach/hauled, apparent wind of 12-15 knots and a speed of 4-5 knots, means that when you tack - you never tack 90 degrees, it's more like 120 degrees, maybe more - which most times I notice is heading slightly backwards. (This along the coast of California, so limited room to sail.)
And, probably also because of Apparent Wind, the opposite direction of a close reach isn't a broad reach, it's more a run straight down the wind.
Hey!! Look out for those yelly fish = Portuguese Warrior. You can die if you get burnt by them!
400 miles = 644 km!? Totally 1800 miles = 2897 km? Thats not so far. But then it’s But then it’s 870 miles = 1400 km from the Azores to the mainland.

@Lee Benson I don't think it's the same artist. The Hannah Stone that committed suicide spelled her name with an "h" at the end. The artist featured in this song is credited as "Hanna Stone" without the "h" at the end of "Hanna".

I just had a look at the requirements when sailing, WOW the amount of paperwork to cross borders and stop over in a marina is crazy. You wanna be free and yet so constrained by the world.
How do you guys do all the necessary visas and what not? Also have you guys linked up with any other people sailing the world to be safer or helping just in case? Good example is crossing the Atlantic.
You gotta sail the Med guys.
