This is one of the first dust collection build videos that don't have me scratching my head at the decision making. Great video, nicely documented steps. I'm going to price these parts and watch this while I build it. Thanks for your efforts.
My thoughts exactly! I too, am not in the budget to spend 1-2 G’s on a DC, and also have seen for years that at least the heart of the HF dc was a great value. I saved this video so that in the future, when i build this EXACT system, I can pull it back up lol
I've watched a lot of these kinds of 2-stage filter setup videos, and I liked yours best. Thank you for putting this together. I'm getting ready to copy your build almost exactly. Only thing I'm doing differently is using a clear bucket under the filter so I can see if there's anything dropping into the bucket. Probably not needed, but it'll keep me from constantly checking it. lol
@@matteckelkamp Amazon, it's a clear detailing bucket with lid for $20. Expensive for a bucket, but sure nice to be able to look over and see if I have an air leak or other problem with the dust collection running.
Home Depot has a 5 gallon bucket with graduation (measurement marks) on the side, it is not transparent (like glass), but is translucent (the level of the contents can be easily seen). Seems like it was $3 or $4. One word of caution: to get the graduation marks facing in the desired direction, get the Gamma-seal lid, the Gamma-seal ring and bucket in the correct orientation before installation. Recommend placing an index mark or piece of tape on each item to help.
Seen close to a hundred of these types of videos to research how to set up dust collection in my new shop. Your setup and video instruction are the best. I plan to use your method this summer. Thanks!
it is a slick looking system what did you use for that reducer from 5" blower inlet to 6" cyclone exit. and have you heard if a 31 gal galvanized trash can will not collapse or not?
I’ve just completed a setup like this with a few small adjustments since I wasn’t installing in a corner. Thank you for this video and awesome improvement to the harbor freight dust collector!
I brought home my new (used) 2 stage Jet with the canister filter and I sat for a day and a half wondering how I’m going to set my system up. I kid you not I was drawing out a wall mounted system almost identical to this and I was going to make some room in my 1 car shop tomorrow. You’re the first person I’ve come across that did it this way. I thought I was crazy but apparently it works great lol. Cheers
Easily the best video I’ve seen on this subject - the engineering is well thought out and preserves the maximum suction/airflow possible - really great job on this- install looks super clean
This is a great set-up and it will be nice when it's time to empty the sawdust. Your lungs will appreciate the upgrades you've made. Thanks for showing us your design and I will be using ideas from watching this video.
This is great, I did a ton of research and this setup seemed like the optimal combo, now you made it much easier to visualize, design and mount up. Thank you!
@@GageDrums I didn’t but I think there’s a 20% off sale at harbor freight now. At the time the cost and time investment wasn’t of value after you add in the Wynn filter and Oneida cost, plus duct work around my shop. I got a used Oneida mini gorilla on a stand for around $900 instead
Get after it bud! Nice video! I received a HF dust collector for father's day and due to other obligations it's been sitting in the corner while I do my setup/mod research after the kids get to bed. Your video on this topic is up there with or better than stumpy nubs' video on the topic, which is high praise. Continue to do work, buddy! 🇺🇲🤙
Thanks! Well worth the watch and will make my installation alot easier. Can you tell me the distance needed from the ceiling to accomodate the Winn cannister filter?
Hi, great video. I'm in the process of doing this now. I went with a replacement for the Radeks Workshop filter instead of the Wynn. I hope that wasn't a mistake. Haven't decided on the Super Dust Deputy or building a Thien Sepatator. Thanks!
I bought the same dust collector and plan on upgrading it in a similar way. I'm starting to think we're not all that smart though. The cyclone and upgraded filter is around $500 in upgrades alone. $800 would probably buy a pretty decent name brand dust collector...lol
Yes, you could buy something decent for that price (1.5HP singe stage with a MERV 15 filter). That will cover any tool that uses up to a single 4" dust port no problem. Primary downside to the single stage is needing to clean out the filter every time you generate a bag of sawdust and its really messy. To get into a 2HP 2 stage collector with the filter like he built in this video your $1500-$2000, so you are cutting costs about in half, plus you get to say you built it yourself
Did you leave the intake 5"? I got my wen. But I saw a video where a guy was testing his flow after each change and when his friend sent him a wooden cover with a 6" plastic flange on it. It didn't increase his CFM.
A small safety item lower the blade guard/guide on your bandsaw for safety and better cuts. Using a translucent 55 gallon barrels let you see how much dust you have collected.
Hola! 🖐Wow! You really stepped up that system, it looks like you are going to give it a run for it's money. How has it performed now that you have had it in use for a while? Have you made any changes or modifications? Thanks for the video and all the info. Take care and have a good one, Adios!👊
Watched many videos on this and related topics, and I keep returning to this one, to review some portion, to get some detail…It was really well done, nicely built, looks great. What switch was used? Could not find it in the video or description. Trying to find a similar switch for a HF 2HP dust collector (115 Volt 20 Amp).
I am thinking of doing a 'Thien' type system when I noticed the air filter looked a lot like the air filter that goes in the Freightliner's and Kenworth's that I used to drive! I think they are about 1 micron, which is still 'trouble'... I could probably spray a can of Endust into the filter and make it 1/2 micron...hmmm... There are filters on Amaz... that are $60! For instance, Wix 46883. $61 in Nov '22. 14"x25"...what's not to love? Has a chrome cap on it you can cut out with a jig saw metal blade,,and stack 2 of 'em up! Hell's bell's,,,at that price...buy 3 and stack them up! 6' high of air filters. Actually I'm going to vent mine outside, low to the ground. But if I were in a basement, etc, I'd do my build with some Big Truck air filters. You think those engines don't have great filtering? Best thing to do if you have a dust collection system is wear a 3M P-100 mask while you are sanding, etc., vent outside, and hope the little particles don't impede your health if you think any/all of these filters will do 100% of the job. A nice build, and thanks for posting it.
Great upgrade and great video and detail. I have been doing the same thing. I have everything except for the new large filter. Bloody things are pricey. Cheers
Nice job on the build and the video! I am looking for another use for the harbor freight dust collector which has been phenomenal for several insulation extractions and blows.
I saw this video a long time ago and still reference back to it. I wonder how this setup has held up over all this time. It looks great and I have that same dust collector
Just an observation (having trod this path myself). Everyone starts with a shop vac. Then they enhance the shop vac, usually with a separator (the slanted thing). Then they get an improved outlet filter. Then they get a small, roll-around dust collector. Then they get an improved outlet filter for the DC. If you are currently using a shop vac (enhanced or not), but not satisfied, I suggest you jump straight to the DC, and then call American Fabric Filter (or equal) to get a "1-micron rated outlet bag". You rob yourself of all the hours of fun playing with the hoses, but you get where you're going that much faster. Shop vacs do a decent job of keeping the floor from getting too deep, but they don't really do the job of a DC. [A shop vac has a higher pressure-to-flow ratio than most DC designs; a dust system benefits from a high flow at moderate pressure. A good outlet bag design {eg, make it bigger} won't penalize the fan with excess pressure loss.]
nice job. exactly what I need to do. I do not have a corner to use so I will be building a right angle bracket to hold the blower. Thanks for the Vid. It will help me a bunch.
I really like your common sense easy to watch videos. You go straight to the heart of the subject your videos are about without all the extraneous crap on others. A BIG BZ to you sir (bravo Zulu, it's a Navy thing) I just finished my 24x50 metal garage am insulating now following your other videos and this dust collector is definitely going in it next. Thanks for all the links I'm using them to order so materials will be ready when insulation is complete. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
Nice. Just finishing up my new shop and will be converting my HF collector to this system. How often does the filter need to be accessed (cleaned) and the 5 gal bucket emptied. I am thinking of putting the blower and filter in my shop attic to free up a bit of space.
Nice! I'm doing something similar with a Craftsman dust collector my brother gave me. The only question I have is you used 5" flanges on the bottom of your Dust Deputy and the top of your 55-gal bucket, but a 4" flex hose. That hose will stretch over that, or is the rest of your flex hose 5" as well? It all looks the same size.
Daddy needs a new pair of Shoes! Thanks for the video; just what I needed to see...got an old Jet Dust Dog and a GIGANTIC 35 gal can with "cyclone lid"...(CBA: not worth the floor space).
Awesome vid. This is exactly what I need. What is the diameter of the canister (what diameter filter will fit)? Looks like you have the 35B222NANO - MERV 15 Nanofiber with removable end cap?
Nice job! That's almost identical to the dust collector I made! I used a trash can instead of a barrel and my Y connector on dust deputy, one port goes outside through the wall and the other side is for inside. It works great
Thanks so much for this video! I am looking for the next phase of dust collection in my small shop to step up from my Ridgid shop vac lol. One question - with the separator and filter upgrade, do you know is this setup is in line with the other dust extractors like 3M or Festool? I know those are HEPA rated but they still only do one tool at a time and a setup like this would be more practical for multiple tools.
What type of fitting did you use at the bottom of the 6 inch hole below the plywood stand that connects the flex tube from the bottom of the SDD to the collection can. You missed showing that in your video
Watched your video several times and keep coming back to it. My layout is almost exactly the same. One question - I’m having a problem finding a coupling to connect the HF Y-connector to the Cyclone - look like you have a short piece of pipe that goes inside the cyclone connector and inside the y-connector, but have not been able to find that in the big box store - they have 4 inch (too small) and 6 inch (too big). Closest I can find is a 4 x 4 CI Plastic to CI Plastic connector. Can you share what you used?
Hi. Either I miss your explanation every time I watch or I'm just missing something. Did you use a 5" flange fitting of some kind on the BOTTOM of the plywood supporting the Dust Deputy?
Awesome setup! Can you tell me what the approximate height from the bottom of the dusty deputy to the top of the filter is? Trying to do a similar setup and want to see how big or small of a barrel I can fit in my small shop.
I was wondering with the HF motor directly tied to the Oneida cyclone separator, eliminating any length of 4",5" or even 6" tubing between them ,how much did it increase your CFM's? Also I wanted to find out what was your CFM's from the HF fan ? Did you change out the fan for Rikon 12" fan?
Great video! I copied you exactly. I got the same barrel even. How do you empty it without causing a huge mess? Any special moves or a certain type of bag to dump into? I considered putting a large yard bag in there and screw the lid onto it, then only let if fill partially so I can still get the bag back out?
Nice video. Have you noticed any issues with mounting the fan assembly horizontally? Any reduction in sucking power? Anything you would change since you did this in January? Thanks!
@Striper Seeker you'll see in the video that I built a small shelf for the dust deputy to mount to, I added a 5" flange to the bottom of it and used 5" hose connected to that. Then another 5" flange on the barrel lid!
Just stumbled upon this video. I have basically done the same setup. Only difference is I used a grizzly filter with the cleaning handle, fit perfectly on the hf dust separator. Have a 1 micron bag below it. Like the pail idea.
The $49 "Dust Stopper" from Home Despot and a 7+ gallon "6HP+" shop vac from Lowe's or Menard's or where ever you can get one under $100, does a better job in my tiny shop on the table saw or router table than a $3600 240 volt 3HP cyclone I was willed by a late friend. He had a semi-pro workshop and sold cedar chests in Branson, MO. His five-inch pipes just didn't work well with my 3" outlets. Moved TONS of air, but no suction.
I tried the plywood disk and bucket with screw top Gama seal lid under the filter but found that dust just piles up on the plywood shelf. I went back to the plastic bag because it allows the dust to fall straight through unobstructed. Ya, that annoying bag and metal band actually work better. You will find out as you have to deal with trying to reach up and around the plywood shelf to vac it up. Unless your incredibly ambidextrous.
I have the same set up except I upgrade the impeller to the bigger one. Do you happen to have an issue with air blowing out from underneath the black endcap on the motor itself. When I suck up a lot of dust it'll actually shoot the dust out from underneath that cap, completely defeating the purpose of the canister filter because it fills my shop with that fine dust.
Great video- I just finished mine last weekend following your steps.. just wondering, where did you get the hose holder that you are showing mounted to the wall?
Wonderful Installation. I am in the process of doing the same. I already have the Wynn Canister Filter and will order the Super Dust Deputy next week. Have youi made any changes over the past months that you would recommend?
Great video, Thanks for sharing. I'm getting ready to mount mine and seen many videos on it. I 3d Printed my large cyclone but have not tested yet. Love your setup.Since this video is a little over a year old,how its it all working out.The 5 gallon bucket idea instead of a bag for minor debris.
reat video! I think I'll be doing a similiar set up with my woodworking shiop. With this system, are you able to attach multiple hoses to different tools all at once?
Very nice modification. I shall copy this and then tell my friends it was all my idea. One question: did you lose any suction from the modification? Mine always seems to lose suction on long PVC runs .
I've set up a woodworking shop and now have a clean slate, but I'm uncertain about what diameter pipe to opt for in my dust collection system. Currently, I'm equipped with a Harbor Freight 2HP setup, enhanced with upgraded fan blades and a P181038 filter, alongside the addition of the Oneida Cyclone, which I've wall-mounted. I've noticed many TH-cam creators employing 4" pipes, while a few opt for 6". Could you shed some light on why you chose the size you did?"
I followed the video step by step. The system works great with the exception on one thing - almost all of the dust is going to the 5 gallon bucket and hardly anything is going to the barrel. I'm wondering what I did wrong, because it looks identical to your setup.
Nice set up . But how do you empty shaving barrel do you have to turn barrel on and off or I'm I missing something also where you get flex hose from bottom of deputy to barrel .regards Arthur
Flex hose is in the link in the description. To empty the big barrel just disconnect the hose and open the lid. To empty the bucket, you unscrew it from the bottom of the filter
Good afternoon. And the last filter, does it work in the opposite direction? It is designed to suck air into itself, and you direct the air out of it. Does it damage the filter?
Great video, and a great project. What kind of life expectancy do you get out of the air filter? In my home shop I usually empty my central machinery’s bag once every couple weeks
Thanks for this. I'm in the process of copying your specific design. One thing I didn't see in the video is what you used under the bracket you built for the Dust Deputy. I'm guessing it's a second 4" flange, but thought I'd ask. Great take on the HF mod!
The bottom of the dust deputy is actually a 6" hole! I used a 5in flange and tapered the plywood from 6in opening on top to 5in on bottom. Then 5in hose.
@@PatriotDIY I couldn't tell in the video where you tapered from 6in to 5in on the dust deputy. I did see where you tapered into the Gamo Sealed bucket.

Can you share what you used?
its a rubber coupler that fits OVER each piece, found it on amazon
Love this upgrade, I just don’t have the ceiling height for it.
Hi. Either I miss your explanation every time I watch or I'm just missing something. Did you use a 5" flange fitting of some kind on the BOTTOM of the plywood supporting the Dust Deputy?
@@buzzhazzard yes! The hole in the plywood is tapered from 6" to 5", then there's a 5" flange on the bottom to accept the 5" dust hose
Awesome setup! Can you tell me what the approximate height from the bottom of the dusty deputy to the top of the filter is? Trying to do a similar setup and want to see how big or small of a barrel I can fit in my small shop.
About 9 ft
I was wondering with the HF motor directly tied to the Oneida cyclone separator, eliminating any length of 4",5" or even 6" tubing between them ,how much did it increase your CFM's? Also I wanted to find out what was your CFM's from the HF fan ? Did you change out the fan for Rikon 12" fan?
@@brucetripp6805 i don't have a way to measure the CFM, I can only tell you it works very well. I have the stock fan
Great video! I copied you exactly. I got the same barrel even. How do you empty it without causing a huge mess? Any special moves or a certain type of bag to dump into? I considered putting a large yard bag in there and screw the lid onto it, then only let if fill partially so I can still get the bag back out?
I use a dolly or gand truck and wheel it out to the woods and dump it
Great video, can to tell me where you got the Y adapter coming off the dust deputy?
It came with the harbor frieght dust collector
How do you clean the pleated filter? My setup is essentially the same just configure a bit different. Great video, thanks
I just blow it out with air compressor
Nice video. Have you noticed any issues with mounting the fan assembly horizontally? Any reduction in sucking power? Anything you would change since you did this in January? Thanks!
No issue! Works great
@Striper Seeker you'll see in the video that I built a small shelf for the dust deputy to mount to, I added a 5" flange to the bottom of it and used 5" hose connected to that. Then another 5" flange on the barrel lid!
Just stumbled upon this video. I have basically done the same setup. Only difference is I used a grizzly filter with the cleaning handle, fit perfectly on the hf dust separator. Have a 1 micron bag below it. Like the pail idea.
I’m looking to do this with the grizzly filter as well. Does it need those gear latches for it?
@@KeimpieceCarpentry i dont
Great video- I just finished mine last weekend following your steps.. just wondering, where did you get the hose holder that you are showing mounted to the wall?
Should be a link in the description. The end of the hose is just rested on a 4in flange
Wonderful Installation. I am in the process of doing the same. I already have the Wynn Canister Filter and will order the Super Dust Deputy next week. Have youi made any changes over the past months that you would recommend?
I've changed a couple of the blast gates to metal ones, but other than that, no changes
Really nice build! Looks great! And a terrific video! Which filter did you use?
It'd be cool to see some CFM versus vacuum curves. Otherwise it's hard to judge the performance.
Great job… just what I was looking for. Thanks.
reat video! I think I'll be doing a similiar set up with my woodworking shiop.
With this system, are you able to attach multiple hoses to different tools all at once?
Yes! Check out how we set it up here: th-cam.com/video/xd3DfyLc3zg/w-d-xo.html
Very nice modification. I shall copy this and then tell my friends it was all my idea. One question: did you lose any suction from the modification? Mine always seems to lose suction on long PVC runs .
Nothing noticable
Great video! Thanks for figuring this out & for sharing!!
Can you talk about the flange at the bottom of the dust deputy? 6"-5" reducer??
It's a 5in flange. I tapered the plywood hole to make a transition between the 6in dust deputy and the 5in flange
Did Angling the gamma seal help or is that a waste of time…great video btw
good information
Great set up, can I ask where u got the screw on lid drum?
I followed the video step by step. The system works great with the exception on one thing - almost all of the dust is going to the 5 gallon bucket and hardly anything is going to the barrel. I'm wondering what I did wrong, because it looks identical to your setup.
Sounds like your dust deputy isn't functioning properly.
Thanks for sharing your work!
This is a great system. Thanks for the detailed look into setup. Looks like it's time for me to upgrade shop!
Good afternoon. And the last filter, does it work in the opposite direction? It is designed to suck air into itself, and you direct the air out of it. Does it damage the filter?
It's designed for the purpose im using it for
Great video, and a great project.
Great video I am gonna be using some of your ideas
Thanks!
