  • Hakone is a wonderful side trip from Tokyo, a place to relax, enjoy the long views of Mt Fuji of Lake Ashi, but there is also a lot of history here too. The Old Tokaido Highway runs through here with a check point and we’ll explore it today. MAP: Hata-juku Ichirizuka (Tokaido Road Distance Marker)

What an awesome guide, so energetic and a great knowledge of history with the stories. Very impressive. My bucket list includes walking the Tokaido Highway, so I'm enjoying watching this and making notes :)

I quite enjoyed your mini-tour! Just a couple notable corrections: Keanu Reeves would have come from Canada, as he is Canadian; and the 47 Ronin story has been told in film (and novels, and theatre, and even an opera) many times before (at least 6, starting with one in 1910), most famously by Hiroshi Inagaki with his film called Chūshingura, made in 1962.

Great weather. The woodcraft is very popular and well known in Japan. The multiple layers are awesome when you see them piece it together. All of Hakone brings back good memories. We ate yaki imo sold by a street vendor right near the old Tokaido Highway and it was good.

Missed the stream. Amazing they've been able to maintain the old cobble stones and path of the old Tokaido Highway. Crazy that it's stood the test of time so well.
Certainly feels like you've stepped back in time walking that highway. People of the Edo period must have built up extremely strong legs and thick soles walking those cobbles! 😮

We were fortunate to see Hakone last year; it is such a beautiful area, and so peaceful. We got breakfast down by the lakeside near one of the ship ports and enjoyed resting our feet in water I believe is fed by hot spring :) Easily one of my favorite places to visit in Japan.

The furrows around the stones on that road were filled in with soil at one time. The road was even, flat.

Everyone needs to read Japanese Inn by Oliver Statler which chronicles 200 years of the Tokaido Road. Unfortunately the book is out of print but copies are still available if one looks hard. I read this book once every couple of years.

Concerning the bridge over the road... The modern road has been carved/dig into the land. There was no river or bridge in the old days. The landscape was elevated in that time.

No bad time I think - onsen is best in fall and winter for sure! Summer has longer days. I think spring is nice, fall too. Fujisan is best in Winter because the air is clear. Best chance to see it is Nov to Feb!

The Edo period or Tokugawa period is the period between 1603 and 1867 in the history of Japan, when Japan was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate and the country's 300 regional daimyo.
