The fascinating tale of Jan Aarden commences on November 6, 1893, in the town of Oosterhout. It was on this day that a baby boy entered the world, born to Martinus and Lucia Aarden. This child was named Jan.
During his early years, Jan displayed a deep fascination with animals of all kinds.
He began his formal education at the Saint Paulus Abbey in Oosterhout, where he crossed paths with Father Paules, one of the school's teachers. Father Paules happened to be a passionate enthusiast of racing pigeons.
Jan's deep passion for these remarkable creatures ignited when he volunteered to care for Father Paulus's birds. His insatiable curiosity led him on a path that possibly established Jan Aarden as Holland's most exceptional long-distance racer, and the lineage of birds bearing his name is celebrated worldwide.
Jan's burning desire for pigeons was undeniable, but he faced a challenge: his parents were not pigeon enthusiasts, and funds were limited.
Recognizing their son's dedication, they agreed to a modest loft at home. Though not grand, to young Jan, it felt like a palace, and he ruled as its king.
With a loft in place, the only missing piece was the pigeons. Here's where the story of Jan's first birds becomes essential.
Jan's education at Saint Paulus Abbey in Oosterhout introduced him to Father Paulus, a teacher with a unique method of encouraging learning. Jan obtained his very first pigeons through hard work at school.
At 18, Jan joined the Snelvliegers Pigeon Club in Oosterhout. It was here that he traded his initial birds, earned through his school efforts, for genuine racing pigeons.
Jan Aarden revolutionized long-distance pigeon racing in the Netherlands. Through his dedication and exceptional bird quality, he quickly dominated his local club and went on to achieve remarkable success at larger competitions.
In 1924, he relocated to Grintweg, temporarily stepping away from racing to focus on his growing family. His youngest son, Anton Aarden, shared his passion for pigeons. When Anton turned 18, they joined forces as a father-son team, reigniting Jan's competitive spirit.
This partnership shifted their focus from short and middle-distance racing to the challenging long-distance races, a testament to Jan's enduring legacy in the sport.
Their focus shifted to extreme long-distance races, driven by Anton's keen interest. Anton developed a close friendship with Willy Van Campenhout, renowned for his birds in these challenging races.
Conversations with Willy ignited Anton's passion for international races from San Sebastian. However, persuading his father, Jan Aarden, was necessary. Eventually, Jan Aarden agreed, but with a condition - they needed exceptional long-distance birds.
Their own lofts lacked such birds, leading to the quest for the original Jan Aarden extreme-distance birds. Jan Aarden knew that his uncle, Henri Reij from Den Haag, was a prominent extreme long-distance flyer, the champion of Den Grootste Haagsche Bond.
Back in the Reij loft, the standout bird was Oude Vassart, a stunning red pigeon acquired by Henri at an auction held by the renowned racer Pauwels from the south of Gent.
This bird traced its lineage back to the Belgian Champion Vassart of Fleurus, a well-known racer with the Karl Wegge strain of pigeons. Henri then crossed Oude Vassart with a couple of hens from Dr. Bricoux.
For the extreme long-distance flights, Henri turned to Jan Schouten, a champion from Rotterdam and an expert in this field. From Schouten, he acquired his top racing pigeons.
One notable addition was the Limoges Duivin, an older sister of the famous Blauwe Duif, one of the best racing pigeons prior to World War 2. Remarkably, at the age of 19, Henri achieved great success with Schouten, including the 14th National Saint Vincent and the 18th National Dax victories.
