In order not to confuse who is who: The orignal Sub-Zero is known as Bi-Han who then was known in _MK3_ as Noob Saibot. This Sub-Zero shown is known as Kuai-Liang who Scorpion was meant to protect as means of changing his allegiance to defeat Shao Khan. In other words Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang) and Scorpion now join forces: this is not a spoiler.

Bi-Han worried about Kuai Liang facing Shinnok like he did and wanted to protect him, passing on to him secrets to help him survive in case he encountered Shinnok. If it wasn't for Bi-Han, Kuai Liang wouldn't have survived the events of MK4. The MK4 prequel comic even showed part of what Kuai Liang's bio says, and from what was shown and implied on-screen, the two brothers got along really well and Bi-Han was helpful towards his brother.
